How many baby clothes will I need?

How many clothes will I need for baby? Currently I have 7 short sleeved body suits and around 10 long sleeved, 2 dungrees, 3 sleepsuits and 5 leggings in 0-3 and 3-6 months. Most are just plain white which for some reason is getting me some judgement in the local mums group. Is that enough? or does it depend on the baby.

Wait and see. Shops are open after the child arrives. Do add socks and a hat.

Depends when your baby is due (as in the season) and how big they are. Mine was in new baby and didn’t fit into 0-3 months until she was 3+ months. She was 6lbs 9oz so not super small. By then it was spring and I needed more warm weather clothes. Get the bare minimum to start. You can order more as needed. I didn’t use anything but sleepsuits and bodysuits before 3/4 months, no leggings or dungarees or any of that. I did go through about 2-3 sleepsuits a day though as you do need to keep them warm to start.

Plain white clothes will do you no favour. Most things to do with babies stain!

More sleepsuits unless due this month

Honestly I would add another 5 sleepsuits, they will live in them for the first few weeks at least, if not months, and you don’t want to constantly be washing x

Mine lived in babygros and cardigans. Vests in this weather. At least three a day. Never had newborn stuff, just 0-3 and they were quickly out of those. Things with a pattern were good. Hid the stains. I didn't really bother with outfits until about six months.

From experience of two mat leaves every time you ‘mooch in shops’ or go to a supermarket you’ll end up with an extra outfit oops 🤣 they also grow out of stuff so quickly. I donated every 6m things with tags still on

Depends on how much your washer goes on

Yes, depends how much washing you want to do/avoid. I would always have at least 1 spare outfit for the day (by outfit I mean sleepsuit and vest if necessary) and 2 for overnight in case of emergencies. So that’s 5, but hopefully only using 2 at a time?

Also depends on your baby. My girls were both quite refluxy and it wasn’t unknown for both of us to have 3 or 4 outfit changes during a day until I got better at draping massive muslins over us. Nothing wrong with a baby in a white sleepsuit!

What month is your baby due? Most babies are too small for 0 to 3 months when they’re born. I would just keep with vest and sleep suits for a newborn.

Like what @NorthantsNewbie says it depends on your babies but mine had CMPA and reflux. They could easily go through 8 outfits a day.

@Itshotinherebutainttakingoffmyclothes DH confessed that at first he thought I was just enjoying changing the baby into lots of cute little outfits. Then he spent a day with us…

Depends on the baby (our son was refluxy and needed multiple changes per day) we didn’t do outfits until 3/4 months. Before that both kids were in babygros and cardigans or short rompers in the summer.

Thanks all for posting. She's due 2nd September. I have a feeling she'll arrive last week of Aug given how tight it is in there and the heat.

I assume baby will spend most of their time during the day in a long/short sleeved vest and leggings and sleep suits for nighttime.

I would also definitely get more sleepsuits, I am pregnant with baby 3 and have ten (predominantly sourced from Vinted!) because with two other children I won’t keep up with the washing. Three changes plus nighttime is probably an average for me with my other children with leaks, reflux and dribbling.

I also have used simple outfits from pretty much the start because it helped me to feel like we were getting ready for the day!

Actual outfits are cute but very fiddly too. Mine both lived in sleep suits

That's the plan. She's my first so I don't know if it'll actually work out that way. I haven't seen any cardies yet I imagine there will be more in the store when she arrives.

I love seeing new babies in white. I kept my babies in exclusively white for about 3 months then introduced very pale pink or blue. My sister did opposite and had her babies in bright colours from day one. You choose what you like. Do you have anyone who can knit you some little cardigans or matenee coats?

But you can bleach plain white!

I’d get some “new baby” sized shortsleeved vest and then wait. Everyone I knew went bonkers with buying is baby clothes as presents when our dc were born! Shops are still open! A Next account is also very useful for next day delivery.

Definitely get a few more sleepsuits.

I did enjoy getting a few cute outfits for my little one and I still like the photos of him in his cute little dungarees when he was about 3 months old :)

Don't go overboard though because they literally will wear them once or twice and it ends up being really wasteful. Vinted is flooded with baby stuff that's been overbought and not worn.
