Why do twin parents pay double but get no extra help?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately… having twins means buying everything x2, but there’s not really any extra support or discounts out there.

It kind of feels like we’re just expected to manage it?

Does anyone else feel like this or is it just me?

Not a twin mum. But from the outside I can sort of see the point being made here. Not sure why OP is getting so much stick - it’s not AIBU.

Thing about twins is that 9/10 times people don’t plan for twins. You plan for a baby and you get BOGOF. So the expenses come as a shock. I understand why someone might feel like they need the extra help here.

In some ways, like sharing birthday parties, you can save money.

In many (most) other ways it costs a lot more, though.

If you go to Centerparcs and need a cot, they supply the second cot for free if it’s twins.

See. It’s all worth it.

Families with twins or triplets face at least a £20,000 financial hit in the first year compared to raising two singletons in succession, according to Twins Trust research. This is driven by a 15% drop in household income, the need for new vehicles, and high childcare costs. Mothers of multiples are also 20% less likely to return to work nine months after birth

I’m sorry you have had such a hard time OP. The lack of empathy on this thread is staggering. To all those saying that it is the same as having two children, it really really isn’t. I know because I had two children, and then I had twins. No comparison at all.

@insightnumber9
i agree! It’s odd!

i often get the sense there is either an irrational dislike of twin mums or jealousy. I see/hear it all the time even from my own sibling. They also said I “chose” twins 🤔 - the only choice is not to selectively reduce one healthy baby during pregnancy!!! I get the sense she is irrationally angry that i am doing something she knows deep down she couldn’t hack/cope with or thinks me coping with twins makes me a better mother somehow! Or is jealous that I have one more child or the attention that going out and about with twins gets. Nothing like sisterhood to bring out weird competitive one up woman ship!

Not everyone receives child benefit. But for those that do, it's £27.05 per week for the eldest child and £17.90 per week for subsequent children.

Ohhh I see! I didn't realise that.
I'm sure it was more than that when my children were little. That explains a lot. Thank you!

@eastersundaesagreed. Having twins is a bit like membership of an exclusive club which most people don’t qualify to join. Some people on here seem to wish to detract from the unique challenges - so often I’ve read on MN that it is basically the same as having two children close in age (in many respects, not just the financial which is the subject here) written by people who don’t have a clue.
I have to say out in the real world the attitudes I have encountered have been very different- some friends in awe. When you have two children already you just have to get on with it.

I took out twins insurance 40+ years ago, not sure if they still do it,
