My dcs have always been really good near the roads, always stop when asked and never run accross, we live in a busy city. Only a couple of time lately ds aged 6 has been a bit silly, letting go of dh's hand and running accross (which I let him do when I say, but this was without permission). We were out for the day and to be 'funny' my ds ran across a small road without looking, near a corner, and seconds later a car came speeding around. Any sooner and it would have got ds who was oblivious as was busy with na na na na ner behaviour.
When we got home I showed him a car accident on Liveleak where someone got run over, not too graphic and only enough to get the gist.
Is that a bit much for a six year old? Only he's my oldest of three with another on the way and they can't all hold the pushchair!

Any other suggestions??

Poor you - it's stomach-churning when stuff like that happens. But good idea to show graphic example - in my opinion anyway - I don't think they can be too young to learn that extinct is for ever.

I think being shown what the consequences could be is more potent and better for drumming the message in to them than just words (mummy and daddy nagging).

The images show a completely different scenario to the one that your DS got into today.

That footage is inappropriate for a 6 yo, imo, and it isn't relevant to what he did.

I can understand that you were scared by his behaviour, and need to get the point about road safety across to him.

I wouldn't have done it this way, though.

Have to say that although I think the idea of showing them the consequences of the actions, I actually think that video is a bit too much for most 6y. It would have freaked my 6y DD out completely.

Are you for real twelvelegs????? I thought I sometimes treated my DD 'maturely' but would never show her this- she would be seriously disturbed.

The Green Cross Code is designed for children, not a graphic video of people being mown down and killed.

My child knows the green cross code and crosses the road nicely, he ran to be 'brave' and 'funny'. He can tell me perfectly the green cross code, he can tell me what could happen if he runs and yet he still ran accross the road....
He watched up to impact and nothing more from this he could see how fast a car hits another, he did not know anyone got run over he just saw a real smash. Probably the first 13 seconds. Is it really that bad????

Actually, I think "acted" road safty ad's shown in this country are more horrific and tought provocing. It's the fact that this is a real person being killed that in in bad taste. I don't think your DS will be traumatised by seeing that accident, I'm not sure it will stop him running across roads either.

He was sat 4 ft away from the PC and neither he nor I saw the person at the back go into the air [oops emocion]. We just looked at the front of the car.

Perhaps I should have checked out other sites, I was just so frightened. I had two friends at school who were run over, one killed at 7 years.

anyway what the clip showed had nothing to do with a child running across a road. It was a car accident.

I don't see the purpose of showing him the video. It is a completey differet scenario (i.e not someone running out into a road) ad shows adults, not children.

And yes, I think it is clear on the video that someone is hit by the car. Not nice viewing.

There are other clips of cars crashing (i. crash tests, etc) using dummies, inc showing pedestrains that would demonstrate this clearly, without showing a real life impact of someone being quite possibly killed.

I personally would not show my 6y it.

Have you told your DS about your friend? That may have more effect.
