My dcs have always been really good near the roads, always stop when asked and never run accross, we live in a busy city. Only a couple of time lately ds aged 6 has been a bit silly, letting go of dh's hand and running accross (which I let him do when I say, but this was without permission). We were out for the day and to be 'funny' my ds ran across a small road without looking, near a corner, and seconds later a car came speeding around. Any sooner and it would have got ds who was oblivious as was busy with na na na na ner behaviour.
When we got home I showed him a car accident on Liveleak where someone got run over, not too graphic and only enough to get the gist.
Is that a bit much for a six year old? Only he's my oldest of three with another on the way and they can't all hold the pushchair!

Your OP states
"When we got home I showed him a car accident on Liveleak where someone got run over, not too graphic and only enough to get the gist".

That implies that he did see the people get run over.

am with Hulababy and TheTeaspoon on this one.

margo - I was going by the info in the OP, which I think implies that the child was shown the people being hit by the car.

I think that it is indefensible to show a clip of a real situation where people are hit by a car, to a 6 year old.

There would be no point in showing one car just hitting another car. It has no relevance to the problem with road safety that the OP related.

When I was a child (about six) I thought you could avoid getting injured by lying down in the road in the direction of the car and letting the car pass over you with the wheels on either side of you iykwim. I even thought if your nose was too big you could turn your head sideways so it wouldn't get grazed.

Silly obviously but I think children at that age have no idea of what speed and mass can do. I can understand why twelvelegs wanted to show her son the damage that speed and metal can do. I don't think you can see anything too graphic at the beginning but you can see danger.

Fair enough teaspoon. I am a bit confused to be honest...

TheTeaspoonLady · 15/06/2008 22:13

margo - am a bit bemused by it all myself.
