Does anyone actually like their MIL?

Just that really. Is there anyone out there who actually enjoys seeing their in laws and never had any issues with their MIL? I’m yet to meet anyone like this

I adore mine. Prefer her to my mother.

ChicoryChina · 28/10/2025 20:35

Mine is amazing and I am so lucky I am now part of her family. Ditto my father in law.

itsallabouttheorange · 28/10/2025 20:35

I adore my mum in law. She is kind, funny and a little bit ditzy sometimes! Love spending time with her.

I’d love to have a good relationship with mine as I’m not very close to my own mum and would love that kind of relationship with MIL.
But in reality, it’s just not there. She makes it abundantly clear that she doesn’t think I’m good enough for her son and that she doesn’t agree with the choices I make for my children.

DC (and obviously DH) adore her so I try to keep things as civil as possible and always make an effort with her.

FrodoBiggins · 28/10/2025 20:36

Yes, I love her and she loves me and sometimes we have too much wine and tell each other that like a couple of drunk girls in the nightclub bathroom 😂

TaVeryMuchLove · 28/10/2025 20:36

No. But not because she’s my MIL, I dislike her because she’s a genuinely unpleasant person.

MedusasHead · 28/10/2025 20:37

My mil is an absolute angel. I feel very lucky to have her.

Travelfairy · 28/10/2025 20:37

I do my best with mine but she's extremely hard work. She is bipolar but refuses to take her meds. She is also what my sister in law (her daughter) describes as a vulnerable narcissist.
I get along with most people and would let a lot slide for peace sake but she is genuinely an extremely difficult self centred woman who constantly attention seeks...it gets very draining.....

spiderlight · 28/10/2025 20:37

Yes, mine is genuinely one of the loveliest people I've ever met, and I'd want her as a friend if she wasn't my MIL.

Calliopespa · 28/10/2025 20:38

Mine is fine.

I try to see things from her perspective and check myself if I think I am reacting from a place of insecurity, which helps as most MIL/DIL issues stem from this I think.

DancingPuca · 28/10/2025 20:38

I’m quite fond of MIL despite her being objectively fairly awful — tactless, bossy, unimaginative, discouraging, and very vocal in preferring DH’s previous girlfriend. If I mention any of her past exploits on here, I get a resounding chorus of ‘Go NC!’ But I’m not all that bothered. She’s DH’s mum.

And FIL is lovely, though declining into dementia.

TheendofmrY · 28/10/2025 20:38

Mine is lovely. I’m really glad to have MIL and FIL as part of my family. In fact, other than my DM, I’m closer to all my in laws than my own family.

ZenNudist · 28/10/2025 20:38

I definitely love my MIL but she pisses me off. I also love DH but he's annoying too. My dc fall into same category.

MyAcornWood · 28/10/2025 20:39

I’m rather fond of my parents in law, they’re good people. Annoying as fuck sometimes but aren’t we all at times? Currently on a family holiday with them, that I booked so they can’t be too bad!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 28/10/2025 20:40

Yes love mine.

Icecreamhelps · 28/10/2025 20:40

I loved both of my PIL's they've both sadly passed away now. They were lovely and I miss them.

ToddlerSendCoffee1234 · 28/10/2025 20:40

My MIL was a saint. She has passed away unfortunately but she was literally the most caring, loving woman I ever met.

Sholderpad · 28/10/2025 20:41

My MIL is a really nice woman. One of the best.

idri · 28/10/2025 20:42

I’m so conflicted.

I know mine is a nice person. She would do anything for anyone and is EXTREMELY helpful with the kids.

There’s just something about her that irritates me. I don’t think she’s as nice as she makes out. She likes to tell me about all the amazing things she’s done to help everyone out, like spending hundreds on her brothers kids for Xmas because she knows they couldn’t afford much. I just thought why are you telling me if it’s something you’ve done out of the goodness of your own heart? She wants to do nice things but also wants recognition for it.

She was also v overbearing with my first. Used to turn up unannounced with her friends to see the baby, used to turn up every single day without asking. I’d often be asleep on the sofa and she’d be knocking and peering through the living room windows waking me up. She gave constant ‘advice’, always telling me how to do things differently when I hadn’t asked for advice.

She was WAY better after my 2nd and doesn’t do any of those things anymore, but it’s always stuck in my head.

I want to like her, but she’s just so different to me.

StrawberryJangle · 28/10/2025 20:43

I'm very close with my son's ex. Both idiots after a few weeks in their early 20's.. Tried to make a go of it but no way.

I've been caught in the crossfire.

I didn't know the girl from Adam, but she is as much as my responsibility now as is my Grandaughter and I love them both. We get on. There's nothing else to say.

I don't understand all this MIL shit. It's horrible for Mum's of sons to read.

saraclara · 28/10/2025 20:45

My mother in law was wonderful. In the early days I probably wasn't the easiest of DILs (I was very young) but she accepted me into the family with warmth and grace from day one. She was one of those people who everyone loved. I can't imagine anyone ever having a bad word to say about her.

She was more of a mother to me than my own mum ever was, and without realising it, she taught me how to be a good mother, and then a grandmother. I miss her very much.

Betty91 · 28/10/2025 20:47

I loved mine - she was a much better granny to my kids than my own mum is too. And she always told DH to be a better H to me. I miss her - I was lucky to have her in my life.

Pebbles16 · 28/10/2025 20:47

It took a while (we are from different cultures) but I love her.
It took a switch some time ago of considering her a member of my family rather than just my husband's Mum.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 28/10/2025 20:48

Yes I love mine, she is amazing and would do anything for us. I enjoy spending time with her and my FIL. My DC adore them and they spoil them rotten. I got very lucky with them and wouldn’t change them for the world.

Ohmygodthepain · 28/10/2025 20:48

I hated my first MIL. Was a shit mother to all of her kids, didn't protect them from CSA by her parents and then expected a make-over with the dgc. Horrible horrible woman, fake, airs and graces, appalling with money and led her 2nd husband a merry life.

My new mil is currently recieving end of life care and I feel blessed to have been welcomed by her into a warm, loving family where I've felt loved and respected. She will be missed desperately. I wish my DC had her for a grandma.
