Why don’t small babies wear outfits?

This sounds like a stupid question but why don’t small babies wear outfits? The worst thing is I have a one year old who only wore baby gro type things for the first three months but I can’t remember why…

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Same. Nothing practical about babygrows for me. All those poppers and trying to wiggle four limbs into the same bit of clothing. Bodysuits and dungarees were far more practical and simple for me and just as comfortable for the babies.

Babygros with zips are a game changer

@moneyadviceplease- we all have different options. Mine is that babies are much more comfortable in babygros. Dungarees & jeans look awful to me.

I adore babies in babygrows. My nephew used to have a (chavvy) partner who dressed their new baby in full branded outfits, like jeans, a leather jacket and trainers. Poor little thing.

Wriggling legs and arms into dungarees isn’t any easier than a babygro

things like leggings can’t be loose enough to be comfy on the tummy and stay up when they wriggle

baby only had outfits for very posh occasions as they were always more faff than anything else - babygros were simpler and cheaper

100% disagree! Arms are just pulling stretchy straps up and over in dungarees.

If I had my time again I'm not sure I'd use babygrows at all except at night.

Yes but mine would wriggle out too easily / it probably depends on your child and dexterity and if most people prefer the babygro it suggests that most people find that easier ?

The only people I knew who used outfits regularly were very style oriented people so it mattered more to them

The young person being the baby in this scenario?

Exactly, falling standards

cannyvalley · 01/11/2025 10:16

My babies wore a babygro and a cardigan every day for months. They are so scrunched up as newborns up that I think clothes get ruched and rucked up and must be uncomfortable. They had a clean vest and bagygro on for bedtime.

I love seeing babies in a babygro and a little cardigan… especially one made by grandma x

I hate seeing small babies (by which I mean pre-mobile babies) in “outfits”. They look so trussed up and uncomfortable. I kept mine in baby grows till they were about 6m. So much easier and more comfortable. Maybe a soft dress and tights if it was a special occasion out somewhere.

Because young people take no pride in their appearance any more

😂😂😂😂😂

Indeed. Horses for courses. My not liking babygros is entirely practical, not appearance based at all. I have no opinion how anyone else dresses their babies.

you do realise there it’s not a choice between babygrows and full on jeans and leather jackets don’t you? Most people go for soft cotton tops and leggings or cotton unbranded joggers. Nothing easier than a pair of leggings for nappy changes

DaisyChain505 · 01/11/2025 11:20

Because they’re babies. They need to be dressed for comfort, warmth and functionality to change them etc.

Theres absolutely no need for a new born to be in a pair of jeans and a hoodie.

They are tiny little potatoes who lie there and do nothing for the first few months.

Also headbands on tiny babies should be banned too, they’re gross.

User5306921 · 02/11/2025 02:44

I know somebody who dressed her baby in babygros until he was over a year old with loud declarations of how comfortable her child was. I always thought the baby's mother was extremely lazy. The child did not look nice in babygros.

Babygros poppers are also very fiddly. I always hated them.

There are some lovely, sneutral, soft matching sets of tops and leggings that look lovely.

FrodoBiggins · 02/11/2025 02:47

Tbh I would wear a babygro if my plans for the day were just to lie around, shit myself, and cry.

Because would you be comfortable with your top/shirt rolling up constantly all day? Lying in jeans or the waistband of some leggings when you’ve just been naked and free for 9 months while you grow?

if I had a choice between wearing a cotton all in one all day, and an outfit I know what I’m choosing 🤣

Missey85 · 02/11/2025 03:37

I bought outfits for a friend's baby she laughed and said it was a waste of money because babies grow so fast it's not worth buying them
