Why don’t small babies wear outfits?

This sounds like a stupid question but why don’t small babies wear outfits? The worst thing is I have a one year old who only wore baby gro type things for the first three months but I can’t remember why…

Just easier isn’t it.

redgingerbread · 09/08/2025 13:47

Because babygros are much more comfortable and practical.

Because young people take no pride in their appearance any more

Because they need to be comfortable and baby gros are easy to throw in the wash.

Because you’re doing 12-20 nappy changes every day.

The young person being the baby in this scenario?

Pyjamatimenow · 09/08/2025 13:49

Why would you make a baby wear anything other than something smooth, soft and none fussy? Got the rest of their lives to wear uncomfortable clothes. Plus they need changing a lot so you need something simple to take on and off

FeralWoman · 09/08/2025 13:49

Mine did. I loved dressing her up when we went out. Comfy clothes at home and comfy but adorable outfits when we went out.

CommissarySushi · 09/08/2025 13:51

Because it's faffy and annoying, isn't it. And they'll probably shit or sick over it in less than an hour.

I absolutely hate being uncomfortable. Itchy clothes, scratchy labels and tight waste bands!! So my babies were always in whatever was comfy :)

ConnieHeart · 09/08/2025 13:52

If the weather is warm they can just wear a bodysuit with poppers so the nappy stays in place. Put some trousers etc on for out & about

Because babygros are very comfortable and babies tend to fall asleep alot.

parietal · 09/08/2025 13:55

Baby grows are comfy and work for babies. Jeans or a pretty dress look silly and itchy for the poor baby. Anything with an elastic waist doesn’t work because babies change shape so much as they eat.

babygrows are better all round

TizerorFizz · 09/08/2025 13:58

My DDs had Harringtons nightdresses

Essy to access and less fuss than a baby gro. DDs were not sick and generally these were so easy in the first few weeks. Bendy legs not needed and they were soft and beautifully made.

Allswellthatendswelll · 09/08/2025 13:58

Mine did but not all the time just when I felt like putting them in something cute. Usually if we were seeing people. I'm afraid DD did more than DS as girls clothes cuter!

She's in 3-6 months and I'll put her in a baby grow if we are having a mainly at home day but an outfit for visitors or if going out.

Bit honestly there is no right or wrong really! As long as the baby is comfortable and not too hot or cold.

Iloveeverycat · 09/08/2025 14:00

Mine were in them for ages. Nice and comfy. You can put trousers over the top or dungarees when older. When outgrown on the feet you can cut them off and use socks so they last longer.

Toodalooloo44 · 09/08/2025 14:00

Because babies completely lack any sense of style (don't tell them i said so)

TinyTeachr · 09/08/2025 14:11

Your baby grows so fast that most "outfits" would only be worn once or twice before the fit looked off. Anything with a waist is no good as their tummy expands so much when they are full. You want them to be comfy sleeping on their back or doing tummy time ir being carried around. You want easy access to nappy area. You want so edging test is easy to wash and quick to dry.

For me, baby grows and dungarees were the best for these criteria. So that's what all my 4 have worn for the first 4 months or so.

Why does it matter? It's a short period of time. Plenty of opportunities for "cute" outfits once they're sitting up and requiring fewer changes.

(Looking wistfully back to this period. Clothes for youngest currently chosen exclusively for reducing chances of her stripping off the lot in public places)

SailingWonder · 09/08/2025 14:13

Because they spend half their time asleep

VintageDiamondGirl · 09/08/2025 14:14

My children had baby grows but I did mostly dress them in little outfits. Little trousers and woolies over the baby grow - they were both winter babies.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 09/08/2025 14:14

Easier and comfier? Not much more to it than that. They spend a lot of time asleep so what would be the point in wearing outfits?

Lazydaze123 · 09/08/2025 14:16

Comfort? Because they sleep a lot! Also easy to change if they are wet, soiled. Just easier and comfier all round I guess 🤷‍♀️

VashtaNerada · 09/08/2025 14:17

I would dress my entire family in babygros if I could get away with it.
