Why don’t small babies wear outfits?

This sounds like a stupid question but why don’t small babies wear outfits? The worst thing is I have a one year old who only wore baby gro type things for the first three months but I can’t remember why…

Although I remember a poster on here a few years ago who was adamant that her child wore nothing but footed babygros until they were 2.5. I have no idea how they managed to get shoes to fit over them!

🤣

Mine did. It didnt cross my mind not to get her properly dressed. For me, babygrows were bed / house wear.

She didnt wear shoes until she was walking though. So was fully dressed with either tights or socks.

But, I can see why people do use baby grows and as long as the baby is clean and cared for I dont think I care.

Better a clean babygrow than a dirty outfit.

Nothing lovelier than a baby in a white babygro.

Outfits on babies are for the benefit of adults around them who enjoy dressing them up; babygros are comfortable for the baby and don’t ruckle up, constrict them, or have things to chaff or irritate.

When you wrote outfits I envisaged those 1980s/90s giant photos with the poor baby decked out in pink, denim and lace with a massive bow or cap on their heads.

My babies lived in babygros day to day, with a knitted cardigan on top if needed. If we went out for Sunday lunch or entertained then I did have cute little cotton romper suits. They very rarely wore dresses.

Babies are scrumptious and don’t need decorating. I always think little baby boys in scrunched up denim jeans, trainers and stuff look awfully uncomfortable.

Mine lived in babygrows for pretty much the first 6 months... I also can't understand why people buy expensive trainers/other footware for babies. Waste of money imo.

That’s why mine worse babygros… babies sleep/lie down a lot so made sense for them to be in bed wear!

I would dress my entire family in babygros if I could get away with it.

if only it were acceptable for 56 year olds out in public!

LemondrizzleShark · 09/08/2025 14:25

Depends on the age! DS wore outfits when he was 6 months plus, but as a literal newborn there just wasn’t any point.

Babyboomtastic · 09/08/2025 14:29

Mine wore outfits every day. Neither were sicky and the outfit would almost last the day. Dresses were really practical in summer as it made nappy changes much easier.

Our reserve outfit in the baby bag was usually a babygrow but it was rarely used. We were very lucky in terms of few poonamis, not much vomit etc.

Some people think it's common for babies to wear onesies, and some people think it's really common to think it's common for babies to wear onesies.

ok this makes sense. I think I’ve just blurred out all the newborn days. TBH the number one reason for me is that they’re comfy given they’re lying down all the time and can’t really move

They're comfy, simple, easy to wash and youre not fannying about so much when they have a shit three times as big as their body.

Yellowrose225588 · 09/08/2025 15:28

Mine did, nothing crazy but they had ‘day time’ clothes, like joggers and t-shirts (spring babies). I found it helped me mentally to divide the sleepless mess into ‘day’ and ‘night’, I liked to get up and showered and get the baby out of the house in their day clothes. You can buy ‘proper’ clothes in all sizes down to newborn. Personal preference I would say.

Surroundedbyfools · 09/08/2025 15:31

for babies especially under 3 months it’s just more practical; also my youngest had such bad reflux he would spew constantly and need up to 10 full changes a day on top of having to wash my clothes, bedding, cushions etc which inevitably got sick on them so u can bet ur backside I wasn’t putting him into “outfits”
as long as the baby is clean and in fresh clothing of any kind what does it really matter !

fthisfthatfeverything · 09/08/2025 15:45

I tried to buy clothes for my son and all I could find Was baby grows
he’s 5 months now

Some people think it's common for babies to wear onesies, and some people think it's really common to think it's common for babies to wear onesies.

Other way around, surely? People who dress babies in 'outfits' (especially those heinous baby-sized flat caps that were all the range during the Peaky Blinders era, or those weird ruffly dresses and a bow headband) tend, ahem, to fit a particular demographic.

I did babygrows because they are adorable.

And don't get me started on people who graduate to 'outfits' for toddlers that include those awful child-sized high heels or t-shirts with slogans like 'daddy's little angel'.

Mine always did OP.

Especially for special occasions, OMG my baby boy in his mini waistcoat and bow tie was to die for! 🥰 My DD had incredible dresses with matching hairbands, matched mine too 🥰 also had matching dresses to her brother’s shirts- utterly gorgeous.

Mine wore baby gros/sleepsuits for bed/around the house unwell, but never left the house in them.

DappledThings · 09/08/2025 15:50

Mine were only in babygros for a couple of weeks in the day. After that it was all long or short sleeved bodysuits plus dungarees. Just as comfy and far fewer faffy poppers that never did up right the first time. Easier for nappy changes too.

PeaceWhite · 09/08/2025 15:50

Babygrows are really cute and practical and babies look ridiculous in jeans or whatever

perfectstorm · 09/08/2025 15:58

I wouldn't want to sleep in my clothes, and a baby would struggle to adjust their position if a waistband was digging in. I just thought they looked so much more comfortable, when your life involves sleeping every few hours. In really hot weather I had them in modern versions of those retro rompers, in super soft cotton. But that was only when it was too hot for a babygro.

It was comfort.

namechangeGOT · 09/08/2025 16:01

I hate to see babies in ‘outfits’! I’ll never gather why a tiny baby needs a dress, tights and headband on or a shirt and jeans!

Gosh, did you change them for naps? I wouldn’t want to sleep in a waistcoat and bow tie, or a dress and headband!
