Why don’t small babies wear outfits?

This sounds like a stupid question but why don’t small babies wear outfits? The worst thing is I have a one year old who only wore baby gro type things for the first three months but I can’t remember why…

They need nappy cover knickers in matching colours to each dress- then they look utterly fabulous!

I agree, though too much faff for me to coordinate this all the time. A vest underneath covers the nappy well. Saying that, a bit of bait isn't going to kill anyone.

I don't get how trying to match up poppers and wrestle out little legs it's somehow easier than just lifting a dress skirt, with maybe 2 poppers on a vest bottom.

Pretty and practical!

Whenever I see parents with a baby girl in a dress they spend all their time pulling the skirt of the dress down over the nappy. Because it hoiks up all the time.

Why bother with that? There are so many lovely babygros out there.

Can't say I remember doing that. 🤣

You probably ended up doing it so often you didn’t even realise you were doing it.

The sun also bleaches out any stains…

although I did go off the white babygrows when dd was a baby. I must have seen a film or something but I couldn’t shake the notion she looked like an experiment.Confused

I'm not a fan of white babygrows at all so I'm with you.

Because the “pretty outfits” look naff ? Especially with frills ? Babygro is sensible and easy to look after and nice and neat

Outfits can be easy to look after and sensible too. I have twin girls and I'm not a fan of frills or dresses so they don't wear them except for when they get them as gifts for the obligatory picture.

Exactly. I didn't like dresses or anything with frills or anything remotely like a flat cap! I still also didn't like babygros because they are fiddly and annoying. Plenty of soft, comfy and practical outfits that aren't babygros.

I know, the babygrow brigade seem to think that anything that isnt a baby grow must be a frilly, belted, flat capped monstrosity designed to torture children. 🤣

I prefer my babies dressed but as Ive said previously I couldnt care less what other people put their children in.

GreenTurtles3 · 09/08/2025 20:18

My babies only ever wore soft, comfortable babygros for their first few months. It meant no lost socks, no exposed backs and rapid nappy changes.

Because young people take no pride in their appearance any more

😂😂😂

Peridoteage · 31/10/2025 22:48

Very small babies can't control their bodies much. If there's an uncomfortable piece of clothing stuck somewhere, or a stiff waistband they can't easily move and free it up to get comfortable. An uncomfortable baby is going to cry more.

They are also meant to be soft & chubby and need clothes that will stretch over bulky nappies. So babygros are just easy because you aren't trying fit a chubby tummy or nappy encased bottom into a buttoned waist band etc.

I do think there are good options though that are a bit less dull than baby gros though - soft jersey dungarees over long sleeved popper vests looks cute, and my daughter had some soft jersey dresses with vests built in that she wore over soft tights/leggings

TizerorFizz · 31/10/2025 22:50

Mine did wear outfits! They had photos taken at 3 months and they weren’t in baby grows!

User5306921 · 31/10/2025 22:53

There are some really nice little sets that are nicer than babygros imo. Usually a soft, neutral top and matching pants. I sometimes still stop to admire them in Zara.
Def wouldn't have dreamed of dressing in jeans, denim dungarees, frills etc.

PollyBell · 31/10/2025 22:55

Because I had a baby not a doll, I think babies are cute enough without being an accessory

My DDs had Harringtons nightdresses

Essy to access and less fuss than a baby gro. DDs were not sick and generally these were so easy in the first few weeks. Bendy legs not needed and they were soft and beautifully made.

My DC had those too. So easy to pull up and change a nappy. I kept them in the nightdresses for at least 6-8 weeks.

mrsmacmc · 31/10/2025 23:10

DD lived in sleepsuits until she was 5 months old - she had day time and bed time ones. So much easier and less of a faff to get her in and out of. I feel sorry for babies who are dressed in clothes which can’t be comfortable for them!

moneyadviceplease · 31/10/2025 23:22

I couldn’t stand the poppers on baby grows so mine wore lots of leggings and tops which we much easier

Little babies look awful in outfits.

little leggings or soft dungarees really don’t look in the slightest bit awful

Absolutely this. Once they start kicking legs, I find trying to manoeuvre them into baby grows an absolute nightmare.

I don't get why people on here are so appalled at babies wearing outfit. Leggings, dungarees and joggers are absolute not uncomfortable for babies. There's nothing wrong with wanting to dress your baby in clothes to make them look smart.

It's only on here people seem to exclusively dress their baby in a sleepauit until they are crawling. Absolutey every baby group I go, babies are in outfits!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 01/11/2025 06:52

They never get up and get dressed. They are always still in bed.

Mine had fancy BBgrows- rompers. Day and night. Slept in their clothes basically.

I didn’t want DT’s to look smart - just comfortable. They were in babygros until they were nine months. Practical for nursery.

Babies can also look comfortable in outfits that aren't baby grows. I don't get why people seem to think anything other than a baby grow isn't. Leggings, dungarees and joggers are also perfectly comfortable and much more practical to me.

EveningSpread · 01/11/2025 07:47

Newborn babies tend to need a lot of outfit changes due to leaks and sick. Some of them also don’t particularly enjoy being changed or dressed so you go for whatever is easiest.

Put it another way: why would a baby with no concept of what it’s wearing need be dressed in “outfits”? The baby isn’t an accessory.

Why do people need “outfits” for that matter? I wear clothes, but I just try to be warm/cool, comfy, and reasonably smart. Same for a baby, minus the smart!

Same. Nothing practical about babygrows for me. All those poppers and trying to wiggle four limbs into the same bit of clothing. Bodysuits and dungarees were far more practical and simple for me and just as comfortable for the babies.
