Norovirus sweeping through the house

DH started vomiting this evening and now I'm feverish and sat by the toilet. We've got two children - 4 year old and 8 month old 😫. They're going to get it aren't they? How on earth we're going to prevent it when both me and DH are vomiting I don't know!! I'm also breastfeeding and baby wakes every 2 hours at the moment 🙃. I wish I could fast forward these next 48 hours!! Any advice or tips appreciated!!

Is it definitely Norovirus? Could it be food poisoning?

ShesTheAlbatross · 14/07/2025 23:31

They might not catch it. It is very contagious but with adults throwing up into the toilet it’s a lot easier to contain than children throwing up on the carpet, and not quite washing their hands thoroughly for days afterwards.

If you have another toilet that the four year can use that will help. And bleach the bathroom you’re using.

Your 8 month old will be helped by the breastfeeding.

Norovirus is a common cause of food poisoning, and food poisoning from other causes can also spread person to person. So I think better to treat it as if it’s noro anyway.

I don't think it's food poisoning but not sure how we'd know either way - treating it as norovirus either way just to be safe. Feel absolutely horrendous, praying it passes quickly and that neither child gets it. Issue is that DH took the downstairs toilet, and is sleeping on the sofa downstairs, so I've now used the upstairs one as wouldn't have made it down in time (sorry for TMI!!!). Bleach is at the ready and I'm constantly spraying antibac everywhere between vomiting 🙃😫

Oh no, the throwing up has actually started! I thought you might be trying to sit it out through sheer force of will! I am one of those people who would rather feel sick for ages as opposed to actually being sick. I do hope it’s over quickly OP, sending lots of hugs your way.

Sorry op!
i had something similar last week and it was horrendous. Also breastfeeding and have a clingy toddler and had to bring a basin to bed with us all just in case…. There was no way to separate us , we call co slept and the kids didn’t catch anything but no idea if it was norovirus or food poisoning.
Hope tonight goes the best it can

It has sadly started, not long after I wrote this post 😫. I would also do anything to avoid being sick, I actually think it's one of the worst feelings. Both DH and I are feeling very very sorry for ourselves!!!

Thank you (just realised I haven't been replying direct to people!!). I am dreading these next 48 hours 😫 that's brilliant that your kids didn't get it! I'm really hoping our girls don't either!! Our poor 4 year old went to bed very worried about her Dad bless her, I'm praying she doesn't wake and hear me being sick now too!!

I bet. Hopefully this bout will be the end of it.

" Any advice or tips appreciated!!"

Oh lordy. Thoughts and prayers OP. Thank goodness you and DH have a toilet each- noro definitely requires one each. My #1 tip: even if you just think you only need to vomit: sit on the toilet with your pants down and vomit into a basin. Do not be tempted to have your backside pointing anywhere other than down the loo while your abdominal muscles are on their most powerful "get rid of everything on the inside" kick since you gave birth.

Drag a spare duvet and pillow to the bathroom. I normally feel better straight after vomiting if it's period pain or something- not so with noro- I've had it twice and at it's worst I would have just about had enough strength to drag myself along the hallway and down the stairs if the house was on fire. I camped in the bathroom for a while as didn't have the strength for the back and forth (plus the risk of not making it in time each time).

Thoughts and prayers. I hope it's over quickly.

Thank you 😭 posting on here is keeping me sane right now and keeping me distracted! Feel so awful, I'm normally good at rallying myself when ill but this really is awful. 8 month old has woken every hour so far tonight too so between vomits I'm dragging myself to her bedroom to feed her and pray she doesn't wake my eldest up!!! Solidarity is much appreciated!

I am off to bed now Dancing, hope that you can grab a bit of sleep. Will check in again in the morning 💐

Beamur · 15/07/2025 00:20

Solidarity OP. Everyone in our house is awake due to DD vomiting every 20 minutes. She's being very stoical about it.

I think it's doing the rounds at the moment! My parents had it a couple of weeks ago. I hope your DD recovers quickly and is able to get some sleep!

no idea why my comment posted loads of times! Sorry

Eggybreadwithnuts · 15/07/2025 00:36

Can family or a friend take the kids? Or take them out so you can rest up?

TiswasPhantomFlanFlinger · 15/07/2025 00:38

Keep changing your hand towels and keep a cover on toothbrushes.
My DH and both adult DC caught norovirus 2 year ago but I didn’t even though I slept in the same bed as DH.

Hoping I can persuade grandparents! Eldest should be in nursery tomorrow but neither of us are in any state to take her! Plus not sure we should send her in, even though she's not showing any signs of the virus

Good morning, I'm still awful - still being sick (although nothing left in me!!). DH is wiped but hasn't been sick again since he went to bed last night. He's got the children downstairs who, so far, are symptoms free thank goodness. My baby girl was up hourly last night between me vomiting so I'm absolutely exhausted - trying to have a couple of hours in bed now whilst the children are occupied. Grandparents don't feel comfortable taking our eldest and we were too worried to send her in to nursery just in case! Think it'll have to be a TV day today!! Thank you for thinking of us, so kind of you xx

Not sending her to nursery is probably better, not least because it means no one has to haul themselves out of the house to take her. Also having her around might give the 8 month old someone to watch playing and keep her slightly more occupied!
