How not to cry at school events

I've just thoroughly embarrassed my son - I held it together until the end of the event but by the end I was was in floods...of happiness that he's done so well, and that's after a few very difficult years of me divorcing his abusive father, and then moving house and school.

I would love to be able to hold it together better...does anyone have any techniques they can recommend please?

If you really want to know….

I used to be hopeless at this, if someone is telling me about something sad that has happed to them, I well up. However much I tell myself that it’s about them and not me, and it’s not helpful (or professional) if I cry, I still do. Or did.

Until someone I know who is a GP told me this: press the your tongue hard on the roof of your mouth near the front, just behind the ridge where your teeth are. You may need to experiment until you find the right spot.

I have no idea why, but it always works for me.
