Hairwash - how often?!

A trivial matter really but it occurred to me to ask how often you wash your lo's hair? I am a bad mum that only washes ds and dd's hair once a week. This is perhaps okay for a boy who hates hair wash(he's nearly 4). But my dd is 18mo and if she's going to have longer hair am I going to need to plan for frequent hair washes and conditioning treatments like I've seen some of my friends do with their older dds?! (We are really bad, as we've had the same bottle of shampoo for some years!!!)

I wash my dds' hair once a week and she's 5, she has a thick mane of glossy shiny chestnut brown hair (that she was born with) and it never gets greasy.

I think if it looks fine, then once a week is plenty.

fuzzywuzzy · 09/05/2008 21:07

twice a week, sometimes more if they've got it dirty

schneebly · 09/05/2008 21:08

once a week here - it is a painful process and I wouldn't like to do it more often

every night when they get a bath

nobodysfool · 09/05/2008 21:10

At least once a week for ds-he has short spikey hair.
Every morning and night i rub it with a wet flannel when he is in the shower just to freshen it up (and remove the pollen as he suffers from hayfever this year).

brimfull · 09/05/2008 21:10

twice a week and one of those os on the shower at the pool

snickersnack · 09/05/2008 21:11

Once a week or if they've been swimming, it's hell on a stick round our way on hairwash night, don't think the neighbours could bear it if it was more frequent.

SlowDown · 09/05/2008 21:19

It is hell hairwashing here too. I have to bribe them both with chocolate or jelly beans, so if I wash hair more frequently, it might be bad for their teeth!

Once a week and dd is nearly 6. Too much effort to do more. Am considering trying out that dry shampoo stuff though.

iamdingdong · 10/05/2008 19:44

once a week for 4 yo DTDs saturday night ritual, it doesn't need doing more often, unless swimming or on hols at beach

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 10/05/2008 19:44

You'd be appalled. Once every ten days!! It's such a drama though. We both want to put it off.

ZoeC · 10/05/2008 19:46

Every other day. Both dd's have fine hair like mine and it goes greasy and straggly if not washed for too long. I do my own daily.

madmuggle · 10/05/2008 19:46

When it looks manky. There's no real reason to wash it otherwise

kategarden · 10/05/2008 19:46

Once a week, with loads & loads of conditioner - DD is determined to have long hair & I've always thought that it keeps in better condition & looks nicer if you don't wash it too often.
I do sometimes wash it after her swimming lesson if we haven't got the hat on straight & the chlorine has got in.

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 10/05/2008 19:48

I've just read back the thread. AM I the winner of the disgusting mother then? Any advance on ten days? Anybody? (please,

funnypeculiar · 10/05/2008 19:49

once a week - although sometimes more often in the summer when their hair is always mashed up with suncream & hat-squashing

ranting · 10/05/2008 19:55

EB, if it makes you feel any better, I have been known to leave it 10 days. We should rename this thread, hairwash angst!

SlowDown · 10/05/2008 20:02

Lol EB, my self esteem is rocketing now! How long have you had your bottle of shampoo, does it out-do my 3 year record? At least the headlice are not going to go anywhere near our lo's hair (don't they like clean hair??)

we do both boys every night in the bath but DS1 is 4 and really gets very very sweaty

Shells · 10/05/2008 20:12

oh no. i'm going to win. only do it every 2 or 3 weeks. it doesn't need it tbh and they have lovely shiny hair.

PerkinWarbeck · 10/05/2008 20:18

every second night.

would rather do it less often, but DD has a sweaty head. And she is quite snotty, and a fair amount of that snot ends up in her hair [nauseous emotion].

Washersaurus · 10/05/2008 20:30

9 mo DS2 had his first ever hair wash tonight!

DS1 (2.9) makes such a drama about having his hair washed we only usually do it when absolutely necessary - y'know when you can spy bits of food and stuff in it

UniS · 10/05/2008 20:41

when his head smells manky. can be once week but in current hot weather is more often, he gets V sweaty under his hat.

midnightexpress · 10/05/2008 20:47

Our rule for ds1 is 'when he smells like a dog'. Such a flippin hoo-ha, my nerves wouldn't be up to any more often.
