After a blanket denial by other parents to recognise cheese strings (dd's party), I'll start with:
Ribena
processed cheese slices
coke for children
readymeals for children

and we are vegetarian.
Aside from that, dig in

I thought the same
we often skip dinner and just have baked eans on toast
Very nutritous and cheap

posieflump · 18/04/2008 20:29

beans lol

francagoestohollywood · 18/04/2008 20:33

Not sure whether it is a ban I just don't buy:

fizzy drinks
crisps
processed meat and cheese
milk chocolate (we prefer it dark)

on a regular basis

Would never ban anything, just don't buy certain things,ie Bernard Matthews,Sunny Delight ,cheap meat.
Have no problem with chocolate in moderation.
TBH am too lazy and been doing this parenting lark too long to care anymore.Just try to lead by example and hope they have a healthy relationship with food.

francagoestohollywood · 18/04/2008 20:34

and yes, battery eggs

noddyholder · 18/04/2008 21:04

This thread reminds me of a house viewing we went on when ds was 3.It was a big old house lots of stairs and the woman said we could leave ds downstairs while we looked around the other floors. When we came down he was sitting on the sofa with a pint glass of coke and the bottle next to him of supermarket own brand COLA I have never seen him look so happy

Chipstick · 18/04/2008 21:09

These things that you have 'banned' - are they really banned or things you have tried and just don't like?

Tinned meat for example, yes its gross so bought, tried, not liked, not bought again.

jingleyjen · 18/04/2008 21:11

we don't ban anything but I do the shopping,
I don't buy

cheap meat
non free range eggs
fizzy drinks
ready meals
ready chopped veg
anything specially branded for children

I try not to buy crisps chocolate, biscuits and cake but that is because I will eat them and I am fat enough already!

badgermonkey · 18/04/2008 21:13

I was a ready-grated cheese snob until I realised that it was cheaper to buy it grated than in blocks. And, I don't have to grate it, and you don't end up with that concrete-like centimetre left in the packet that you find six weeks later.

LyraSilvertongue · 18/04/2008 21:17

Oh yes, battery eggs and cheapo chicken. Too cruel.

wannaBe · 18/04/2008 21:21

agree with expat that artificial sweeteners are dreadful.

I have to say that I really can't understand why people buy things like tinned ravioli/meat etc as they are truely vile. But maybe that's because I remember vividly the ravioli/spaghetti (twas that spaghetti in tomato sauce that you get in tins) that we got at boarding school.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 21:23

is that right, badger? wow, that is interesting. although i still wouldn't buy it cos of the coating, but i wouldn't have expected it to be cheaper.

and WHAT is wrong with baked beans, fgs? i love them. (but only heinz, obv).

LyraSilvertongue · 18/04/2008 21:24

DP bought the tinned ravioli when I was at work. Then fed it to the children. He is hereby banned from shops.
Agree about artificial sweeteners. I never buy no added sugar squash. Prefer the high-juice variety.

badgermonkey · 18/04/2008 21:24

Yeah, I did the /100g thing because I didn't trust my maths!

The coating's only cornflour, so it doesn't clump. Nothing sinister - and I'm very suspicious of this stuff.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 21:24

wannabe my mum always refused to buy us tinned stuff like that, so we thought it was sooooo glam. one day she relented and bought meatballs for us to eat when she was going out for the night, we were so pleased, a Victory!

couldn't believe how SHIT they were, we starved that night rather than ate them...

Aitch, Sainsbury's own brand baked beans are better than Heinz. Heinz go mushy when heated.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 21:25

cornflour, is it? cheers for that. i still don't like it. have you tried m&s cornish cruncher mature cheddar? delish.

expatinscotland · 18/04/2008 21:26

DH used to eat that tinned spagetti on toast.

As a meal!

He was soon cured of this affliction.

barbamama · 18/04/2008 21:26

UN-BAN BAKED BEANS!!

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 21:27

ooooh, expat you are making me nostalgic for spag hoops on white bread toast with lots of butter... i may have to revisit.

expatinscotland · 18/04/2008 21:29

He also ate those! On minging sliced Mother's Pride white bread toast with Flora.

So clarty!

I couldn't believe it when I saw him bring it out on a tray and start to eat it.

Right up there with the first time I saw him order a pizza supper, covered in 'broon sauce' and tuck in, a real vom-inducing moment.

LyraSilvertongue · 18/04/2008 21:30

What does clarty mean?

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 18/04/2008 21:31

no really, that was a delicious lunch when i was a kid. real butter though, obv.

on very cold days when we came home from school for lunch we also used to get those round meat pies from the butchers (mutton pies, have you seen them, very peppery and a lovely pastry case) and then just before serving she'd fill the top of the case with hoops... gad, that was such a treat

You poor, deprived soul!

I've no doubt DD1 would happily eat such victuals.

I despair of her wee Jock heart sometimes.
