Toddler refusing to wear nappies

SillyNavySnail · 30/08/2024 15:57

Toddler is 2yr8 months.

She doesn't know when she needs to poo or pee, she usually tells me when she's done a poo and wants a clean nappy, but sometimes won't tell me and I don't realise for a while. Other times I can smell it, ask her and she may Sat yes, but she may say no.

She went through a stage of protesting nappies, been generally OK the last few months, but today refused to wear it, then fell asleep on sofa, so I had to shove a blanket under her, in a hope it would save the sofa..

On waking, refusing nappy.

We got a potty a few months ago, which is a game to her. She sat on it a bit for fun, sometimes did a poo, then pulled down nappy to sit on potty, so poo fell on floor

Although she doesn't know when she needs to go, I'd have said she's still not ready.. am I wrong?

We have a 16 month, so not sure how to navigate potty training now or in the future, as a potty can't just be left out

Any help or advice please x

I can't leave potty around with the baby, who just plays with it tho.

And it's one thing on the floor and outside, but don't want pee on the sofa which is basically impossible to get pee out of the seat cushions...

I've read many people say, if you wait until they know they need to go, they're pretty much trained in a few days obviously with accidents, if they don't know when they need to go, it takes weeks. She doesn't even give any obvious cues

@SillyNavySnail

🤣🤣your 'baby' is the age I was toilet trained, reliably, no accidents. no being sat on the toilet or potty, just going when I needed to

Cloth nappies were an incentive as my parents took me travelling. But is was the morn to potty train much earlier than the trend is now

I've learnt that she won't sit on potty if she doesn't need to go, she'll just get angry. Whether that's 20,30,60 mins since she's been.

So, partner had no success whilst I was at work, but in the 2hrs since I got home I got 3 pees on the potty, with just a bit of 1 on the floor. That was by watching her cues and prompting once or twice. One small pee was by baby playing with potty and toddler saying "no, my potty", then sitting on it for a small pee

We're not doing rewards, just lots of praise, high fives etc. But if it doesn't go well, can start simple rewards

This is brilliant....keep going!
Don't worry about what happens when you aren't there. The main thing is she knows how to do it and will get it soon. Keep up the good work.

Last pee of the night, just before going upstairs for the night, fully on floor near potty & amongst a pile of legs blocks, and also went in her wellies.

Well 4 semi successful pees today. I'm home all day tomorrow.

Thank you for the support

That’s amazing progress for day 1.

Rainallnight · 31/08/2024 19:51

Well done - brilliant work.

I know this isn’t the point of the thread but are you happy with the level of support and partnership you get from DP?

Bobbybobbins · 31/08/2024 20:18

Good job OP.

Similar welly experience here a couple of weeks ago! I diluted a tiny bit of bleach in water and rinsed them out so that they didn't stink!
Well done and good luck tomorrow!

what a lovely toddler. Potty train them ...is not difficult. That was the advice as I can remember. Take the nappies off and put them in pants no matter are they trained or not, so they start feeling the poo and wee and want to get to the loo to evade the discomfort next time ( advice for toddler who are not training on time )

TrelawnyBastian · 31/08/2024 20:26

My DC hated the potty, wouldn’t sit on it, we got one of those seats that go under the toilet seat and he much preferred it. Could be an option when training x

BurbageBrook · 31/08/2024 20:37

She's more than old enough to potty train and is making her feelings clear!

BurbageBrook · 31/08/2024 20:38

Sorry OP missed the update. Glad it's going well.

Genevieva · 31/08/2024 20:38

Start potty training properly. She’s ready. You mostly hold her back and don’t tell her she’s not ready if she has an accident. Let the 16 month old join in if they want to. My youngest was potty trained at 18 months. Her choice. She saw her older brother using the potty and decided it was for her too. Never had an accident.

PurBal · 31/08/2024 21:16

Glad it went okay! It is a marathon not a sprint so take the wins. It takes an average of 6 months to potty train. 😊

Thanks. Tho two girls here and I did read girls are generally 2-3 months quicker than boys, so we lucked out there haha!

Just an update. Day 2. Only 10.30am and been awake 3hrs, but 3/3 pees fully on potty. One was even unprompted.

She'll be downstairs on her own in half an hour whilst i spend 15/20mins getting baby to nap & no poo yet, so see what happens!

Time to potty train. You might even find d the 16 month wants to try in a couple of months one they see their sister use the potty. My two were trained at 2.2 and 2.4 using the Oh Crap book and perseverance with the oldest one, neither said when they were wetting or soiling nappies before or asked to be changed. I know people who've trained successfully before age 2 using Oh Crap.

AegonT · 01/09/2024 12:13

Sorry just saw update. Great news! Day 2 was the hardest for us.

Sorry just saw update. Great news! Day 2 was the hardest for us.

Thank you. I guess, we did actually start Friday 3pm, so today is 2nd full day, but sort of day 3. I'm loosely following the oh crap method, without having read the book.

She's not peed for 2hr10, so I'm a little bit wondering if one will just gush out. No poo yet, but she's not eaten loads today really.

I think we'll get her no undies and lose trousers tomorrow. Then Tuesday if she does a big pee at least 40min before baby needs a nap, will pop to the playground 3min walk from home. However, what happens if she needs potty in the playground, do we take the carry potty and just open it at the side of the playground? Can't leave quickly with baby, plus she doesn't tell me she needs it, even if she realises yet

Thank you

I think we started with small outings, outside was easiest. Yes to carrying a travel potty of some sort (and I know people who just took the normal potty in a bag). Nobody will mind if you get the potty out at the side of the playground.

Dinosaurlover · 01/09/2024 16:08

Well done, though I'd try and take an hour this evening to read oh crap. It might help, and give you some tips.

Rory17384949 · 01/09/2024 20:00

Yes take the potty with you until you're confident she can tell you in enough time to get to a toilet

Thanks. I haven't read the book, but have read a lot about it, and that's what I'm loosely basing our training on

Fair enough. I'm not sure you're training is much based on it tbh, but there's no rule that says your usage to follow anything to the letter as long as it gets the job done.

rabbitorhare · 01/09/2024 20:21

You're both doing great! Don't worry about taking the potty out, no one will even bat an eye if you need to use it.

Another vote here for including your 16m old as soon as you feel you can manage it. Sit them on the potty every nappy change. If you know they do a big wee at a certain point of the day - often shortly after waking whip that nappy off and try and catch it with lots of praise.

DD1 was trained at 18m and DD2 (20m) cracked it at the end of week 1 of the summer holidays. You'll be so glad once it's over and you can ditch the nappies!
