DS18 wants laser hair removal

A local salon is doing a deal on full body laser hair removal at a really reasonable price. DS18 has asked for this as a birthday present. Is there anything I should know before I say yes/would you say yes?

I know she is 18 so can make her own decisions but I am the one paying for the gift :) thanks!

Check it's suitable for her hair / skin type. For example it can't be carried out on red hair.

Wineisalwaysagoodidea · 07/08/2024 16:52

I would say yes. I’m much darker haired than my DM and she never appreciated how I felt about my body hair or supported me to get rid of it. I don’t think for a minute she intentionally meant to be dismissive but I don’t think she understood my strength of feeling on it. Had this been me at 18 I’d have been over the moon

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 07/08/2024 16:52

I've had laser and it's amazing, can't believe I wasted so much of my life shaving! I didn't go full body but full legs and I want to go back for my armpits!

Do you mean DS or DD ? (Asking in case this is affecting how you feel about it)

CaptainBolt · 07/08/2024 18:44

Your son? That's unusual.

sorry I meant DD! 🤣

i'd go for it. that's on my list for a future big birthday but no idea how much it costs. any ideas? wish I'd had it done years agilo

One thing i was wary of was getting all my pubic hair lasered off in case styles change and i want a little more coverage when im old (i had all but a little bit zapped to give me options) - so worth getting her to think about whether she wants to remove it all or leave some as an option

Not as unusual as you'd think. Seems most youngsters like to be hairless

DaughterNo2 · 07/08/2024 19:01

How many appointments are you happy to pay for?

Just as many as they need? Sorry I don’t know a lot about this and wasn’t sure about permanence

i would say absolutely yes for underarms and legs. For the bikini line I would be fairly conservative- it’s the place you are most likely to regret going all out in (bitter experience)
It is such a relief barely having to shave and if I had done it when I was 18 I would have saved so much money, time and bleeding legs!

USaYwHatNow · 07/08/2024 19:17

Go for it OP, however monitor carefully for its effectiveness. For example, I paid about £3k all in for full body laser hair removal and after about 6 months wasn't getting the results expected, especially as I had the best hair/skin combo for a good result (pale skin/black hair).

They suggested I get tested for PCOS as they didn't want me to waste my money. I didn't, buried my head in the sand and then low and behold about 4 years later I was diagnosed with PCOS.

Yes, the hair that now grows back is finer I guess and it's completely gone from my bikini line, but considering I paid for full body including a Hollywood for my pubic area I still have a pretty decent bush if I want to let it grow 🤣 sorry for the TMI!

So my advice would be to go somewhere reputable, with hospital grade lasers where possible and monitor for effectiveness based on your daughter's hair/skin combo.

sleepdeprivationismyname · 07/08/2024 19:18

I regret waiting so long to get it done. If she is pale skinned and dark haired then typically that produces the best results. Doing it professionally is best. They give you all the advice, like to do it over winter, don't sun tan when trying etc. Make sure that she knows that it isn't forever and will probably need touch ups. Mine is 15 years old and I have some minor regrowth now. If she has children the pregnancy hormones will likely cause regrowth.

That was my worry too, but then what would you rather grey pubes or none?! And your hair down there usually falls out as you age anyhow

I'd let her do it, OP. I spunked £60 x 6 x 15 on Hollywoods alone before I had laser

avidteadrinker · 07/08/2024 19:39

I would defo recommend but it depends on your skin/hair type and finding a good provider. It worked brilliantly on my legs and bikini line (did it 14 years ago and no tops up) whereas under arms and upper lip didn’t work

Namechanger385u4p · 07/08/2024 19:48

@FakeMiddleton i was thinking i might need some coverage if it all starts to droop 🤣

That made me laugh. What "options" do you mean? Is the "little bit" to anchor are luxurious grey weave-in merkin in your old age? Mind boggled.

Yupdowop · 07/08/2024 19:54

In reality it takes about a million sessions.
One thing to be aware of is paradoxical hypertrichosis, which isn’t nearly as rare as they tell you. People can become seriously hairy after laser. Thick black hair where you had none before.

Janwholovesjam · 07/08/2024 19:56

I bought a Philips Lumea. I had pretty low expectations but I’ve been amazed at the results. I can’t believe what a difference it’s making already. Only used it 3 times and my legs are almost hair free and those annoying little dots where the hairs were are gone.
Im light skinned with dark hair so maybe I was lucky but it’s a much cheaper option if you’re concerned about price

Thingamebobwotsit · 07/08/2024 20:01

Another vote for a Philips lumea. After seeing reviews here I caved and bought one. Between epilating/waxing and this I have had really good results and I am seriously hairy. Suggest trying that first (much cheaper) and see how she gets on. That way she can do top ups as needed.

Namechanger385u4p · 07/08/2024 20:02

I used the lumea on my legs and the results are thr same as the ones on my bikini/underarms that are proper laser

Yupdowop · 07/08/2024 20:04

Following on from my post I deffo wouldn’t go full body first. See how the regrowth is after maybe a year of sessions on the main areas. If she doesn’t have a hairy back /belly etc, don’t use a laser near it. Absolute nightmare if you laser bits of your body that have fine light hair, and the regrowth is black thick long hair, that needs more laser for years.

Not wishing to derail the thread, but THIS is a consideration? Madness
Legs and pits, an absolute yes: they are on public view

I think it’s an important consideration!
a nice neat triangle to trim now I’m older feels more flattering to me . Granted I don’t flounce it down the shops or anything but I prefer it on the occasions I’m naked in company 😃
