How in the blazes do you keep baby socks on?

With DD (now 5) she wore lots of dresses and tights and we never really had to deal with the worst item of all clothing.... flipping socks!!!

Now I have a 5 week old boy. Cute little t-shirts and trousers and the sweetest little dungarees. Gorgeous, right?! Wrong. I have been introduced to the world of socks. The horror!

How does anyone keep the slippery little suckers on?!?

Depends on the dungarees. I've seen babies in nice soft ones with a buttons on the front, but I've also seen very small babies in thick corduroy and denim ones with buttons on the back. They weren't the stretchy kind either. Would you like to sleep in those materials with buttons on your back?

Never seen any with buttons on the back myself. I had loads with no buttons at all. Just stretchy shoulders. Far easier than a babygrow for nappy changes too.

I just don’t bother with them. I don’t think anyone has ever died from having no socks on.

Apart from maybe in Victorian literature.

Thanks all - I might buy a pack of sock-ons and see if they work. When the weather is consistently warm, i'll be ready to embrace bare feetedness for sure! But days like today, I think would have been too chilly.

He's such a big baby that 0-3 month onesies are starting to not fit any more (😭😭) and we were given so many lovely clothes in the 3-6 month age range, it would be so sad to just buy loads of baby grows (they were great for the first 4 weeks then the last few days we've been having to hunt out the clothes currently in his drawers that still fit!) - if there's a cheaper way of using what we have, i'll give it a shot!

Thanks all 🙂

Just use tights on him when needed.

Baby socks are the most pointless invention known to man.

SoupDragon · 23/05/2024 09:27

Baby socks are basically just something to keep the baby amused when they get old enough to pull them off themselves.

KThnxBye · 23/05/2024 09:32

Tights are not female clothing. Put him in tights exactly the same as your other baby.

Everyone in my house wears tights at various points in the year for various activities, male female adult child.

Mh67 · 27/05/2024 08:25

Stick to tights. Doesn't matter if he is a boy. Had many boys wearing tights in my nursery

The only time my now 15 month granddaughter wears socks is whenever she puts shoes on to go out or otherwise we don't bother, as a baby she wore babygros so didn't need them or was covered by a blanket.

Simonjt · 27/05/2024 08:36

Just use tights, if he has a top on tucking that in will stop it riding up as well.

BingoMarieHeeler · 27/05/2024 08:38

You don’t 😄 sock-ons are ugly AF and make me wonder why people are sooooo adamant to keep their baby’s sock on that they actually bought some weird contraption to do so. Just get footed leggings.

MushroomQueen · 27/05/2024 08:40

Tights all the way, there are some cool tight online shops if your concerned about looking girly, which is a bit silly tbh, my 2 older boys had them and they lasted very well, i forget the name of it now, I also had sock ons when I needed them to have socks on as the floor in my mother in laws house was stone and very cold. But generally tights or no socks

MotherOfDragon20 · 27/05/2024 08:44

Honestly I just gave up. It’s coming into summer just forget the socks and let him have his feet out.

ToTheMoontoStay · 27/05/2024 08:45

At 5 weeks old my dcs only wore baby onsies with feet and little cardigans. You can get beautiful baby gros. Loads of people bought us 0-3m socks, they barely wore them!

Mischance · 27/05/2024 08:46

5 week old babies should not be wearing mini adult clothing like trousers. They should be in babygros and comfortable

Amethystanddiamonds · 27/05/2024 08:54

I gave up pretty quickly with socks. Used tights and footed leggings in winter l. Mind you DC both have a deep rooted loathing of socks and love nothing better than to have stone cold feet. I can be found most weekends searching the house for discarded school socks, cheering occasionally as I find a hidden stash.

Idontcareforthat · 27/05/2024 11:15

Tights in the winter for my DD and DS.

The Gap (RIP) socks were better, but at 5 weeks in the summer, either babygros or barefoot.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 27/05/2024 11:40

Tuck his pant legs into the socks

Doyathinkhesaurus · 27/05/2024 11:56

Babygrows with feet. Mine wore a Bonds wonder suit if I needed them to look smart in the 1st year. Joggers over the top of a babygrow is perfectly acceptable Soft leather baby moccasins worked well. Baby shoes on top keep 'em on. Tights if you have to have something on their feet.

Seriously- boys are a different species. No-one coos at them for their outfit or hair. It's a cultural shift. You don't need lots of 'nice' outfits for boys. Joggers/shorts and t-shirts are fine. Boys get dirty a lot. They put holes in things. Some girls do this but they are a minority. HS boys clothes are blue/camo/sludge colour and have stereotypical male logos/designs on them so the choice is vile anyway.

BurbageBrook · 27/05/2024 11:57

At this time of year I wouldn't bother. It's nice for their sensory development for them to feel their feet.

BurbageBrook · 27/05/2024 11:59

Hang on I just realised you said 5 weeks! Isn't he mostly in baby grows?

littlebitsofgranite · 27/05/2024 12:38

Another vote for tights. Back in our day (1990s) all our babies had Baby Gap socks, which were pretty good too. Do they even exist now??

WaltzingWaters · 27/05/2024 12:39

100% sock ons! Best purchase!

Baba197 · 27/05/2024 15:07

Tights in cold weather, no one can tell under the clothes in warmer weather and toddling around bare feet. Those sock on things are awful looking. You can also get soft leather pull on shoes from
places like daisy roots which don’t harm
their feet. My son hated socks and would rather freeze, even at 6 the socks come straight off when he gets inside!!

Craftysue · 27/05/2024 17:34

I used to put my son in tights if it was cold - nobody could tell.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/05/2024 17:35

I used socks ons but she did manage to pull them off a couple of times 🤣
