How in the blazes do you keep baby socks on?

With DD (now 5) she wore lots of dresses and tights and we never really had to deal with the worst item of all clothing.... flipping socks!!!

Now I have a 5 week old boy. Cute little t-shirts and trousers and the sweetest little dungarees. Gorgeous, right?! Wrong. I have been introduced to the world of socks. The horror!

How does anyone keep the slippery little suckers on?!?

I never had that problem. Mine had super chubby feet 😂

Imisssleep2 · 27/05/2024 17:48

Buy ones that are too big and go up to slightly over the knee, I didn't intentionally do this but my boy rarely got them off

wizarddry · 27/05/2024 17:51

Sock ons are so fiddly don't bother.

Try the little sock company

When they're tiny....two pairs of socks stay on much better! But my baby was winter born so not ideal for now! However the only ones that actually stay on are the next ones in first size....I've literally never had them fall off....but maybe my baby just has massive feet! At 3 months he is still wearing the first size ones though

I'm generally a sleepsuit for 6 months kind of person!

All 4 of mine (2 boys) have had rights under dungarees in cold weather, and bare feet in warm weather. At a few weeks old, he will either be held (warm and snug!) Or he'll be in a car seat/pram so can have a blanket. Socks don't seem necessary most of the time.

Also..... baby feet are so cute! Let people adore the snuggly toes! Socks will fall off and get impaired for years to come, there's no need to start that chaos early.

NoThanksymm · 27/05/2024 20:11

If it’s cold enough to justify then they get full tights too!

otherwise it’s a losing battle. There are some with like a silicone on the inside for stick, but they rubbed bubs wrong.

so we trained the dog to pick up socks.

Coughsweet · 27/05/2024 20:21

Another vote for Sockons, not perfect but slightly reduce the fishing about for socks. Babygros when at all suitable though. I had 2 DDs and am amazed you haven’t had this issue until having a DS!

Bbq1 · 27/05/2024 20:42

Can you still buy those soft little bootees?

LostMySocks · 27/05/2024 21:03

The gap socks used to be the only ones that stayed in DS. But he stayed in babygrows until he was nearly one, unless it was warm enough for no socks

motleymop · 27/05/2024 21:10

White sock ons with white socks aren't too hideous. I didn't find them fiddly and worked perfectly.
Though at that age, they just wore sleepsuits. Might be getting too warm for that soon though [hopeful].

Little Sock Company. They make baby socks that are designed not to fall off (something to do with the knit) and I’ve used them for both my kids. Not the cheapest but they do work, and they usually have some sort of offer on over bank holidays.

Bonus reason for my recommendation is that they also sell those little booties which any of us 80’s babies will definitely have a photo or two of themselves wearing.

LuckyMum1989 · 27/05/2024 22:29

I'm not bothered about the outfits for the aesthetics 🤣
He was a big baby when born and has already outgrown all the many (many) 0-3 month babygrows and we were given lots of lovely (comfy) baby tshirts and trousers, soft dungarees over baby vesties etc ... and I have no intention of buying more pjs when we have perfectly serviceable and comfy clothes that someone has gifted us, and spending money we don't have, to replace clothes we DO have - just because he's so long and chunky 🤣
I've tried him going sock-free but i keep looking at his little feet and feeling like it's not warm enough yet to be sock-fre, but MN wisdom seems to be it would be fine. So thankyou! Cheapest option for the win!!

I was also given too many 0-3m, which swamped them when they were born! I learnt to get a 1 month size for my 2nd (just incase) which was much better from birth. They outgrew 0-3m quickly after that. I also had a few 3-6 months baby grows, so I just put them in those. Maybe that may be an option as well to sort of mix in with the outfits? It would also mean you'd get more wear out of them!

WithACatLikeTread · 29/05/2024 19:23

Tights.

Fundays12 · 29/05/2024 19:26

Hand knitted booties with little ribbons on them to tie them where what I used for all my kids.

AngryLikeHades · 29/05/2024 19:47

My mum used to put my baby brother in tights underneath some clothes. It obviously depends on the fit of the garment.

Caspianberg · 29/05/2024 19:54

Little knitted booties over the top. You can buy online or Etsy if you haven’t an old neighbour to knit lots

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 29/05/2024 19:54

Primark baby socks!! I bought a load of them so I had plenty when they inevitably fell off and got lost, but they stayed on!!!

Mumofoneandone · 30/05/2024 10:13

Moccasin type slipper socks were pretty good at staying on my little boys feet as well as or instead of socks!
Think I also used socks that folded over several times at the top, which were firmer than just slightly elasticated at the top. Think they were from John Lewis!
Bare feet were definitely an option at times and also used tights with my little boy in cooler weather.
Also had some leggings left from my daughter which were a snug fit and could trap the socks under those!

Mystro202 · 01/06/2024 20:23

I just went to buy socks for my 9 month old- £12 for a pack of 7 frilly ones on Next, George £5 for 4 pairs.. and as we all know they probably won't even stay on!! Crikey, we'll be bankrupt!!!

SharonEllis · 01/06/2024 20:37

Tights. More comfortable under trousers/dungarees than a babygro. But at 5 weeks all my babies wete in babygros - 'proper clothes' are a lot of hassle for the poor things when you're changing them so much.
