nits again !!!!!!!

I am sick of the bloody things!!!!!!!
ds1 came home from school with them on the 21st december. Did him with mousse and have been combing with conditioner ever since.despite that, found another f*** yesterday and today have found one in my baby's hair!! Feel like crying.He's only 16 months and has that very fine silky blonde hair. Just combed him through, moussed him and washed and conditioned him. Am getting to the end of my tether.
am considering home education and never letting them mix with other kids again.
any tips greatfully recieved.

try using tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner ALL the time, even when he doesn't have them. apparently they don't like TT and stay away.
we ahven't had any since using it. ASDA & Tesco do their own one

I am sick of the things too!!! I know exactly how you feel. My dsd who doesn't live with us gets them really badly. I spend hours combing them out for her to go back home and back to school to get them all over again. I don't mind her having them so much, as I know all kids get them, but it's the extent to which they build up and the fact that this has been going on for 5 years. I can comb out hundreds in one sitting.

I was really upset when dd got them the first time. The nit comb must have been really sore on her delicate little head. I can't stop dsd cuddling her though, so I just have to put up with it.

I get annoyed because it seems to be a mute point with dsd's mother. We cannot even mention the word nit without her either going off on one or being met with a wall of silence. We just want to try and help dsd get rid of them or at least keep them at bay. I think I get cross because it's all seems so out of my control.

Anyway, rant over! I have found that loads of conditioner and wet combing is the best way of getting rid of them, it just takes time and patience. Make sure you comb from underneath, the opposite way to normal IFKWIM. We don't bother with lotions any more as there seems no point for us to get her clear, for her to be back with us 3 weeks later with them again. Happy combing!

that is really horrible surfermom- her mother must just be not doing anything at all for her to get so many. can't your dh have a word in a kind of ' don't neglect my child like this' kind of way?
ds1 is only 4 and now he is at school, although it revolts me, i kind of understand that all kids get them. but for the baby to have picked them up off his brother is just vile.he doesn't understand about being combed and gets really distressed and wriggles and fights.
have just ordered a 'bugbusting' kit that someone mentioned on another thread. maybe these combs will be more efffective than the one i've got.

We have a lemon-scented spray that acts as a preventive measure & seems to work. I got it at Safeway but that was ages ago, so I don't know if they still do it.

the most effective thing is to comb through weekly. We use tea tree oil and it helps, but I find that a quick comb through each weekend, whilst they are in the bath, the best way to keep on top of it. I don't say that lightly as my children have thick, curly hair and it takes ages.

Hi Alexsmum - thanks for the suggestion. He's tried talking to her, but she usually hangs up/doesn't answer or slams the door in his face if nits are mentioned. We're in a real catch 22 situation as we try not to upset dsd'm mum as much as possible for dsd's sake, but are we letting her down by not saying anything. Any opinions gratefully received!

Have had great success with the nitty gritty comb,tea tree oil and conditioner every week!I find if you rub some neat tes tree through the scalp about 1 hour before you wash it they are dead when you comb them out HTH we have had nightmares too

I did a thread on this when ds got them in November. WE treated him with chemical lotion (according to my hairdresser, who's daughter also had them, lotion is more effective than mousse), then started the combing out every other day treatment.

We have eased off that now, it drove him and me looney every 2 days, but we are keeping them at bay, by washing his hair 3 times a week with baby shampoo to which I add a couple of drops of tea tree oil.

It is a bit stronger than the bottles you buy commercially (the bathroom smells very pharmaceutical) but the nits are staying away.

Worth a try I think

Does anybody know ... if you've zapped them, and they're still scratching, could it be the result of old > scabs, or is it time to move in again? We only zapped them the day before yesterday....

if they are still scratching there are usually a few who have escaped the comb so it needs doing again!Takes a week or two to clear them completely using comb and conditioner

If there is nothing moving maybe one final comb through with conditioner would be enough Wouldn't do the mousse again though as it is very harsh on hair and scalp

Thanks, noddy. Can't do the lotion again anyway, as it says at least a week between treatments. If only I had two girls that would let me brush their hair normally.

You're absolutely right, mistletoe, I should count my blessings. It just riles me that sometimes they'll let him do things that I can't.

the mousse is the only chemical treatment that is suitable for the boys because they have eczema.the pharmacist said anything elese would be too harsh.
I have been combing at least every other day for the past two weeks and last night i was thinking that he looked clear and then realised i'd pulled another live one out on the comb.only a tiny one so maybe it was the last, just hatched kind of thing. i must be missing the eggs somehow???
bastard things.
surfermom, i can understand you not wanting to upset dsd's mum but surely having a head full like that is neglect?? do you get on with her? could it be that she doesn't know what to do?
i don't know what to suggest but if i was her dad i would be seriously pissed off that my child was being left in that state.

yeah fio me too,as i was saying the pharmamcist said it was only chemical treatment suitable for them.
how embarrassing!!!! i need to take ds2for a haircut but am paranoid in case hairdresser finds something i haven't!!!

how embarassing ks My hairdresser did the same, but just checked as both kids had had them. then she said 'no you just a bit of a dandruff thing going on'!

i would think a metal nit comb would do the trick ks
