How your second labour started?
I know its meant to be quicker than the first, but I take it it isnt just a gush of water and a rush to the hospital?
Or is it?
And how much quicker was it than your first?
Im due in a couple of weeks.

dd1 was about 3 days (posterior presentation, forceps delivery), dd2 3 hours homebirth. With dd2, contractions started and were straightaway strong, regular and at 4 minute intervals. Fully dilated in 3 hours flat, and only 8 minutes pushing.

LynetteScavo · 02/04/2008 13:10

2nd was induced, so that doesn't really count.

3rd was slow and steady, but much quicker and easier than the first.

scorpio1 · 02/04/2008 13:11

ds1 12 hours starting with cx.

ds2 3 hours starting with cx.

I went into labour in the night after walking loads that day
The contractions came on much quicker and stronger than first time round
Had to get ambulance to hospital in the end
Waters broke at home - 1st time round midwife broke my waters for me
No pain relief except G&A, first time had epidural
Could get up straight after birth, 1st time I felt like I had been run over by a bus
Went home that day, 1st time had to stay in 2 nights

Twinkie1 · 02/04/2008 13:13

First labour - 26 hours - controlled - lots of drugs and not too many stitches.

Second labour - (1 day late) waters broke Monday - induced Wednesday - DS turned up Thursday morning - acual labour was 1 hour - scary and painful as not controlled with drugs - lots of stitches - recently have been back to have episiotomy repair as midwife made such a balls up of it down there!

There was me expecting nice quick easy labour after DD - lucky I didn't have the homebirth that I was told would be best for me!

Haylstones · 02/04/2008 13:14

1st waters broke before 22 hours of labour with gradual build up, ventouse and epidural. 2nd I had mild contractions on and off for a couple of days then woke up in full on labour, excruciating contractions 2 mins apart. Went on to progress quickly but after pushing for 90 mins had emergency csection as ds was huge and OP- if not for that the second time would have been much quicker (probably around 8 hours start to finish). Waters didn't go until in labour second time (hind waters on own then forewatersby mw)

jennifersofia · 02/04/2008 13:15

2nd was 1/2 time of first.

FasterPussyCatGrrrl · 02/04/2008 13:16

DS1- waters broke, contractions started about an hour later. he was born 9hrs after that.

DS2- waters broke, contractions 15mins later, he arrived in under 3 hours.

Tutter · 02/04/2008 13:16

went into labour overnight with them both

gradual niggles turning into contractions

waters did not break and had no show (that i noticed) either time

established labour lasted 6 hours with ds1, 2 hours with ds2

elliott · 02/04/2008 13:17

the 'active' phase of my second was actually a bit longer than the first - I think because ds2 was much bigger and also waters didn't break until he was born.
the most noticeable difference was the second stage - ds2 out in 3 involuntary 'pushes' while ds1 required me to do some of the work!

lilyloo · 02/04/2008 13:18

1st induced took 28 hrs from first lot of gel
2nd 12 hours from first cx
3rd induced 7 hours from first lot of gel

Second was best in having started naturally but 3rd best as was quickest!

Good luck

Idobelieveinfairies · 02/04/2008 13:18

I was indeuced as he was too darn comfy in there, was 2 weeks over due so labour was quick, but a lot more painful.

mybestfriendiscalledstig · 02/04/2008 13:27

First - about 7 hours of 'proper' labour, hideous transition stage, but pain otherwise manageable with G&A

Second - niggly pains for 2 days, then sudden bleed at 6am (not a big shock, i tend to bleed in pg ), into general maternity ward, waters broken to check bleed not placental, found to be 6cm dilated. About 15 mins later a midwife walking past the bed (still on a general ward, not in labour room) looked at me quizzically & asked if I'd started feeling a need to push. I just had - was swept down the corridors on the bed, into the labour room, with people shouting 'try not to push!' - dd born about 10 mins later.

Only once i was cuddling her did I realise I hadn't had any pain relief.

Honestly, so quick & easy I can genuinely say I enjoyed it. If I hadn't had the bleed, there is NO WAY I'd have got to the labour ward on time (I had plaaned a home birth for this reason)

Flubdub · 02/04/2008 13:29

Im just wondering really as with ds1, I was in labour (well, had v strong contractions) for about 40 hours, but after I reached 5cm, he was out in 4 hours, and I only pushed (I say 'pushed', I mean he really dropped out! I dont know what that says about me )
. And I was told Id have to go to hospital sooner the next time I had a baby, as he came out so fast.

1st 4 hours 3-4 degree tear

2nd induced very long about 22 hours ventouse

3rd induced very quick very easy

popmum · 02/04/2008 13:32

dd1 24 hr natural labour followed by em c-section
ds1 6 hour natural labour - did happen v quickly at home, calmed down when at hospital but was home in time for tea!

leander · 02/04/2008 13:35

dd niggles around 7-30pm hospital at 9-45pm born 10-23pm, Extremely fast with dd, waters had to be broken both times, no stitches with either, had diamorphine with ds and gas and air with dd.Ds was 1 day overdue dd was 11 days od

hecate · 02/04/2008 13:37

both of mine had to be dragged out kicking and screaming and trying to use the umbilical cord to pull themselves back inside!
3 or 4 days from 1st gel to birth for both of them.
I must have the Ritz of wombs, that's all I can say. A 5 star ueterus

MadMumsy · 02/04/2008 13:45

I started in labour at 4.30 am and went to the hospital at 8.00 only to be told to go home as I hadn't started dialiating. Went back at 11.50 and had her at 12.06!!!! Very close that one.

FasterPussyCatGrrrl · 02/04/2008 13:46

flubdub- when i had first baby i rapidly went from 2cm to 9cm, and DS1 shot out in 2 pushes. (they wouldn't believe he was coming, had to beg her to look, she could see his head)

DS2 came so fast the midwives only got to me for my home birth 5mins before he was out. (so no pain relief either) He 'fell' out aswell- i was waiting for the midwife to tell me head was crowning, when suddenly i opened my eyes and he was being put on me!

just make sure you're prepared is all i can say!

pucca · 02/04/2008 13:48

With my first, my waters went with a pop at 4am on the Sun morn, dd wasn't born until 8am Monday morning, almost an hour pushing.Didn't have any BHs, and only had my show after waters had gone.

With my second, i was booked for a section, but had a show then 5 days of knowing something was happening, 2 nights up at 3am pacing around in pain (these were braxton hicks) then woke up on the Sun morn to my waters popping again, not a huge gush though this time, had an hour of pain, got to hospital and was 3cm, had my section that afternoon.

pucca · 02/04/2008 13:49

Forgot to add with my first it took me HOURS to get to 3cms.

francagoestohollywood · 02/04/2008 13:49

with second baby I had first contractions at around 8 in the morning. Baby was born at 2.15 in the afternoon (and it got seriously painful at around 1). So it was some 5-6 hrs shorter than the first and I pushed for only 15 mins, while I pushed nearly an hour to get my first baby out.

titchy · 02/04/2008 13:54

1st - waters broke then 6 hrs till cx. Ended up EMCS

2nd - waters broke. But had moved to Surrey by then so was too posh to push so elective CS 18 hrs later. (no cx)

sweetkitty · 02/04/2008 14:00

1st - waters broke DD1 born 4h 20 mins later, cx started soon after waters broke, bery rapid and painful

2nd - cx first, waters had to be broken, 2h 30m from 1st ouch that was a bad BH.

3rd - EDD July - few coughs and she fell out
