How your second labour started?
I know its meant to be quicker than the first, but I take it it isnt just a gush of water and a rush to the hospital?
Or is it?
And how much quicker was it than your first?
Im due in a couple of weeks.

1st - 24 hours from waking with bad pains to dd being born. Waters were broken by midwife.

2nd - induced. 12 hours from then til ds born. Also had waters broken by midwife.

claireybee · 02/04/2008 14:10

DD (1st baby)-waters broke, contractions started 15 mins later. She was born 7 hours from waters breaking.

DS on off contractions for 3 days, waters didn't break. Established labour was 4 hours so shorter but because had been having contractions for days it felt longer.

NatalieJane · 02/04/2008 14:13

1st, induced, 12 hours from very first niggles to birth (about 3 hours established labour) Don't know how/why/when waters broke.

2nd, sort of induced, 2 hours from waters breaking and first niggles to birth.

3rd, same as second please

2nd - much quicker started at 9 pm and had ds 11 waters broke around 10.45 gas and air again, pain was stonger quicker butu all fine for me

Good Luck

MerlinsBeard · 02/04/2008 14:36

ds1 started with contractions waters were broken for me at hosp...in labour 3 hours in total

ds2...woke in night in extreme agony, straight to hosp and was 9cm..he was born 20 mins after getting to hosp!(1 hr total!) waters broke 5 mins before he was born.

ds3 (still find that bizarre to type!)...started with cointractions after a sweep. 5 hours and waters broke as he was being born, 2 pushes and he was out!

phlossie · 02/04/2008 15:19

1st was induced.

2nd - I had back ache all day on Monday. On Tuesday I had a 'show' then random mild period pain like cramps that got more regular as the day went on (but didn't hurt). At 1am on Wednesday morning they got very close together, at 3am they started hurting, went to hosp at 3.45am, dd was born at 4.30am!

So slow start and then everything happened very quickly - 5cm to fully dilated in 15mins and 20mins pushing.

Recovery afterwards was much quicker - but watch for the afterpains - ouch!

1st induced at 42 wks, horrendous delivery. Laboured for 10 hrs.

2nd waters broke spontaneously at 41+ 4 during the night, contractions started slowly around 4am. Baby born at 1pm the following afternoon. Similar length of labour but so much easier to manage as was at home.

ImflightbutIcantlogintoday · 02/04/2008 17:33

It started with regular contractions, they said ring back if they carry on for an hour, but I rang back 20 mins later as they were every 3 minutes.
Had him at home 3 hours later. Waters didn't go till I was pushing, which was different to the first time - that was waters then ctx, 8 hours

Best of British!

flubdub I'm glad you started this thread- I've still got 14 wks to go with dc2 but ds1 was born 4 hours after first contraction (they started off at 5 mins apart and quite regular, first cx was an hour after my waters broke on the loo just before bedtime) and I am panicking slightly at not being able to get to the hospital on time as its 40 mins away.

From these stories I think I will go in as soon as I get my first twinge!

phlossie · 02/04/2008 20:41

The hospital will get you in more quickly than if it's your first labour - a friend and I had very similar labours, her first, my second, and the way the hospital behaved towards us was very different - basically assuming mine would be quick (right) and hers would be drawn out (wrong - and she'll be like you next time, Minkus).

CoffeeMad · 02/04/2008 20:54

1st - pain started at 2.30am 9cm dilated at 3.30am on arrival at hospital and dd born at 7.10am waters broken while pushing.
2nd - pain started at 3.30pm Home birth this time ds born at 6.45pm waters broken by midwife just before his head came out.

I was expecting him to be much quicker as dd had been quite fast for a first. No stitches on either of them. Dd 4days od and ds on time. Good luck to you x

latchmeregirl · 02/04/2008 20:57

1st was a slow starter - mild contractions for about 6 hours before waters broke and things ramped up - then about 20 hours before emcs.

2nd was a breeze by comparison - waters broke in Sainsburys , contractions started soon after and baby arrived 8 hours later.

Alexandersmummy · 02/04/2008 20:57

1st DC 8 hours begining to end

2nd Dc 35mins, she was born on the car on the way to hospital!

Next time a home birth I think!

Good luck

first: braxton hicks which slowly turned into real contractions.
18 hrs from very first contraction to ds being sucked out by ventouse

second: braxton hicks which slowly turned into real contractions.
only 6 hours from start to finish

had my waters broken both times

beansontoast · 02/04/2008 21:01

havent read any of the other posts

i think it is wise to be mindful that thi slabour is likely to be faster...but it mightnt necessarily.

second time around i had an hour or so of gentlish build up (plenty of time to get to hospital if i had had to)and then a 'quick fire round' of about 40 mins of contractions and then bingo!

(my midwife told me i was having tightening not contractions proper...so i had no idea i was fully dilated ...and was expecting to have to endure another three or so hours of it ....)

wibbleweed · 02/04/2008 21:18

DS1 - waters broke, contractions started 24 hours later. Ended up being induced to speed things up because of risk of infection. Total labour from first contractions was 24 hours - and from 'speeding up' induction - 6 hours

DS2 - total labour time 7 hours - waters broke about 10 mins before actual delivery.
