DD says she doesn't want to get her hair cut, and when I told her the appointment was made as she said this morning she wanted it doing, she scribbled all over the first painting DS2 did with his Christmas paints.

I have sent her to the step and I am ashamed to say I smacked her. It will be the last time I do though.

I have decided DS2 will have his hair cut if she refuses and DH said she will have her hair cut another time instead of going out.

DS1 said he wouldn't go and is now being lovely looking after DS1 and really yelled at DD to stop hitting him (DS2)

Kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALways seemns that one is lovely when one is awful.

I'd cancel the appointments and leave it at that. Arguing over haircuts isn't something that I'd do.
If ds2 painting is so valuable then I wouldn't have it where anyone could ruin it.

3nab, is her hair a real mess? can you put it in a ponytail if she really won't have it cut?

WHy does she have to have her hair cut in the first place? My DS refuses to have his cut, so I snip off his fringe when it gets in his eyes and leave it at that.

how old is DD? and has she had had anything much done with it before? We go to the hairdressers regularly (and we have known her about 20yrs which helps ) they have had their hair sort of combed and re-arranged even when there wasn't enough fluffy baby-hair to cut, so that does the de-sensitising thing. Don't know if that is any use to you? I have all this to come, as have two boys who keep wanting it shorter every time to compete with mates, but now have little DD. oh, the joys.

Lewisfan - I'm glad you thought my post constructive. I thought it was more constructive than getting so worked up over hairdresser visits to the point that it causes bad feeling and upset in the family. My younger dds don't go to the hairdressers. They have their hair tied back and I give the ends a trim every so often. They don't look like Wurzel Gummidge. Somewhere around secondary school age they want their hair styling so that's usually when they start to go to the hairdresser. By that time they don't tantrum in the hairdressers.
There are more worthwhile things to put your foot down over than a haircut. Jmo, of course.

juuule I would rather you didn't insinuate that I have caused bad feeling and upset in my family. I post on here for support and ideas, not criticism.

DD wanted her hair cut and it did need doing. I occasionally do the fringe but made a mess of it so it needed doing properly. She was an absolute angel at the hairdressers and is very happy with her new hair cut. She is 4 1/2 and has had a few hair cuts.

It's a shame 4 1/2 isn't old enough to say "if you don't get your hair cut by the haridresser then mum'll do it, and it'll be squint!"
I remember my mum used to insist on cutting our hair (partly because it saved money, partly because we used to kick up a fuss at the hairdresser) and she really wasn't very good and it got pretty embarassing. So eventually we learned it was best not to kick up a fuss at the hairdresser

Actually, despite that...

Children can be mercurial can't they. Swinging from co-operative to stubborn just when you don't want them to. As long as you try to remain calm and take the control of the situation it should all work out.

That's the theory. In practice some days you just have to sit & scream inside while the world goes to hell in a handbasket.

Hope it all works out for you and you have a nice, calm relaxing weekend

TBH I am not in the mood for this.

I came on here asking for help and support as I have no one in real life and I am just not up to what feels like a bashing at my parenting skills. I already know I am making tonnes of mistakes, it doesn't need rubbing in.

god there's some bloody judgemental people on here isn't there (awaits incoming). lots of things sound nice in theory but people are only human and we all make mistakes. i'm sure the people who say all the right things and make all the right noises are really the ones with messy houses and grubby kids!

I'm agreeing with 3NAB - kids can be a pain being awkward and i DO hope she gets it sorted and has a nice, calm relaxing weekend!

Well, I didn't expect criticism when it is obvious I am struggling and need help. I have posted many times on here and would have thought it would be known by now how hard I try and how hard I find being a mum. Depression doesn't help and tbh this has set me right down. Cheers.

Just what do people get out of being mean to someone? How exactly does that help?

She had her hair done yesterday and was fine. I had already decided to change it to DS2 havig his hair cut if she refused so it was in hand.
