What age did your little one stop napping?

My 22 month old seems to be dropping the lunchtime nap. He's mostly refusing it now and is wide awake so it's impossible to get him down, but he is then quite overtired late afternoon and early evening. He's going to bed earlier than usual to account for the dropped nap. He just seems so young to drop the nap! Just wondering when others stopped napping? I'm getting myself a bit worried that not having a nap won't be good for him, but equally I can't make him sleep!

DC1 at 12 months.
DC2 napped for two hours until they were three.

My DD (34 months) naps most days for 2.5 hours. I put her in her cot, in her sleeping bag, white noise on, with black out curtains, and she either sleeps or not. We have a toddler alarm clock which will tell her when she can get up. Up until about a month ago she slept every day for the whole 2.5 hours, but recently she sometimes won't actually sleep (about 2 days out of 7). She does stay in her cot though, with plenty of soft toys to muck about with. I think down time is so important when they're little so even if your little one isn't sleeping, I would enforce some quiet time in their cot/bed

My youngest is 2y9m and only really naps now if he falls asleep in car, buggy. There's no way he'd be taken for a nap and this has probably been since 2y4m

22m is quite young still but I don't suppose you can control it.

Hardest part I found was before he was used to not napping he'd fall asleep between 5-6pm. Nightmare ! This only lasted a couple of months though

JDJT · 07/02/2024 14:43

They haven't stopped yet for mine (just turned 2 in January). He still very much needs them. He will only sleep in the car, in the buggy or being breastfed though. If one of these things don't happen, he doesn't sleep.

BarbaricPeach · 07/02/2024 14:50

My son is 29 months and hasn't stopped napping yet. He does 2 hours every afternoon. He can do without a nap if we're busy or he's doing something fun but generally needs it. None of my NCT group with same aged kids have stopped naps and basically everyone in his room at nursery (2-3 years) has at least a small nap every day.

Chanhedforthis · 07/02/2024 14:52

Around 2. It's awful because she's so much nicer after a nap!

fluffyduvetcover · 07/02/2024 14:54

Mine both napped for around two hours after play school until the day before they started school! Also went to bed at a reasonable time

bogoblin · 07/02/2024 14:57

My oldest was about the same age! Just before he turned 2 and his brother arrived - was annoying because I'd been napping with him 😂

There was a bit of an adjustment period where he might nap every other day and then he dropped it completely but his night sleep adjusted for it. I also tried to build in "quiet time" after lunch when he'd usually nap in an attempt to preserve some energy for the evening. He was grumpy for a while but soon levelled out.

Goldiex · 07/02/2024 15:15

About a week before he started reception!

Twdfn123 · 07/02/2024 16:49

My boy is 2.3 and still has a 2/2.5 hour nap most days. He can go a day without one and be perfectly pleasant but the next day he will absolutely need one or he will get grumpy xx

SnapdragonToadflax · 07/02/2024 17:03

About 3 - I know I was lucky! But he was off and on for a while, so maybe a nap every other day. He did go through a stage of refusing to nap around 2.5 but then started again, so all might not be lost.

Quornflakegirl · 07/02/2024 17:08

I stopped my twins napping once they turned 3 as bedtimes were getting later and later. It took a couple of weeks trying to keep them busy so they didn’t nap.

Troglo · 07/02/2024 17:08

4 1/4yrs and 4 1/2yrs, but only because I made them so that when they started school 6 months later they wouldn’t still be napping.

Wictc · 07/02/2024 17:10

1yr! Days are very long!! They sleep a good uninterrupted 12-13hrs at night though.

Caffeineislife · 07/02/2024 17:16

Mine dropped hers fully by 2yrs 2 months. She started to only nap in the car from 22 months. Then it got to where I was driving over an hour a day just to get a nap that would finish as soon as the car stopped. At 2 years it was an every other day thing needing a good 40 minute drive before she dropped off. By 2yrs 2 months she just sat in the car and sung. I stopped after 3 days of 90 minute drives and no nap at all.

firethene · 07/02/2024 17:27

2 years and 4 months and the youngest is still napping two hours a day at exactly 2 years

Neurodiversitydoctor · 07/02/2024 17:48

DC1 around his second birthday. Had stopped pitting him down by 18m , he just napped on the go. DC2 is 17 will still have an afternoon nap given half a chance.

linziere · 07/02/2024 17:56

Mine is nearly 2y4m and still naps at home but has FOMO at nursery so won't nap there. We had a week or so last month when I thought she was dropping it at home too but thankfully she's back to sleeping no probs for around an hour or so. I'm not ready for naps to go 😂

Superscientist · 07/02/2024 17:57

Between 2y8m and 3y2m she went from daily names to 2-3 times a week to once week. She's now 3.5 and has 1 or 2 naps a month

kalokagathos · 07/02/2024 19:14

Mine dropped it at 3 but I used to go to nursery in the 80s, communist Poland. Then we all started primary school at 6-7years old, so would attend nursery before that. I remember all of us having to take a nap between 1pm-2:30pm . We would have fold out beds and bedding provided for by parents. I remember always fighting this group nap and then being the last one wanting to wake up! I must have been 5.5 yo! 😄

lonart · 07/02/2024 19:32

4 yrs 3m. I'm in the UK but in my country the dcs nap in the early years of school so that's normal. But in the UK they generally have nowhere to nap and go to sleep much earlier.

NewUser1111 · 07/02/2024 19:34

DC1 just after two, DC2 until 3.5yo!

gentlemum · 07/02/2024 19:48

Thank you for all the replies! It varies so much, I suppose all children are very different. My son has always been low sleep needs so it makes sense he's dropping it early, but reassuring to read there's plenty of others who dropped around the same age or shortly after turning 2. We're expecting our second soon so it's going to be hard not having that break in the day, but we'll just go with the flow!

First one at 3 years, almost exactly, just as DC2 was about to arrive. Great timing DS.

DC2 was having a nap every 2 or 3 days until just turned 4.
