Will my baby ever crawl?

My DD is 8 months old and her chosen method of getting around is pushing herself along with her legs while lay on her back. I'm not keen on her doing this as she is constantly rubbing the back of her head on the carpet! She doesn't even attempt to try and crawl, she can sit unaided but will always be trying to throw herself backwards so she can start back shuffling.
We do tummy time with her and try to encourage her to move forward on her tummy with her favourite toys etc but she gets really upset and just wants to back shuffle. We have also tried putting her into the crawling position which she is very sturdy in but she just lowers herself back down onto her tummy and onto her back again. She can't get herself into the sitting position unless we put her in it either, whereas babies who crawl are able to as they are already upright.
At the moment I really can't see how she will ever learn how to crawl doing this or even be able to pull herself up onto furniture! I wouldn't be concerned if she showed some signs of just army crawling but she doesn't even do that, she has never moved forwards on her front.

Has anyone else had experience with this, if so when did your baby learn to crawl?

DD only crawled at 19 months. She'd been bum shuffling since about 15 months so I wasn't expecting crawling at all. Finally walked at 21 months.

DS crawled at about 14 months I think, maybe earlier. Walked at 16 months.

Neither of them really pulled themselves up and never cruised. They just waited till they could stand up in the middle of the floor then they were off. They all do things differently!

My daughter didn't crawl until just shy of 11 months. She is now 15 months and not walking. Odd step here and there.

I really wouldn't worry, 8 months is still small and she might not even crawl. Some go straight to walking.

Enjoy the time she can't move! I did this time round. My first crawled at 7 months and walked at 12 months. Was much nicer having a baby who stayed where I put them 🤣

They are all different! She will move in her own time whether that is crawling or walking 😊

I know lots of kids that went from rolling around abit to walking, not much crawling

And just to add my daughter didn't roll either until about 10 months!

Don’t worry, some babies don’t crawl.
When she starts sitting up by herself she might start reaching and then shuffling forward.

They all get there in the end. Some babies crawl early and then don’t walk till late. Some go straight to walking.

My DS went through the pushing himself around on his back phase too. He was most upset when he’d push himself all the way to the sofa and couldn’t go any further.

The main thing is not to worry about it.

Mine hasn’t crawled yet at 17 months. Started bum shuffling at 13-14 months and seems perfect happy getting around that way.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 07/12/2023 09:12

Neither of my 2 ever crawled. Some just don't!

Santaiswashinghissleigh · 07/12/2023 09:17

Crawling late is a bonus ime. Dgs walked at 7 months. He was a living nightmare...

Delphina17 · 07/12/2023 09:18

The worries of first time parents - don't miss those! I remember having those same thoughts. Your baby will of course grow and learn to walk eventually. Her muscles are growing and developing even if she's not using them as much as other babies. Some babies don't crawl, some walk by 9 months, some by 18 months. With my first I found she would acquire a new skill quite suddenly (eg. She woke up one day walking and never crawled again after that - this is kind of still the same with skills like drawing/reading/writing - she's not very good then suddenly makes a leap overnight).

Lots of babies don't crawl by 8 months anyway. My first started at 9 months and some from our NCT group never did. They talked early but didn't start walking until 18-20 months.

Hope this is reassuring :)

DS never crawled. He shuffled on his back from 5 months. Then started climbing and cruising. He never needed to crawl.

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/12/2023 09:19

My eldest never did! She walked at 9 months instead.

MigGirl · 07/12/2023 09:23

Some babies never crawl, my nice didn't she bump shuffled and then walked. Crawling I don't believe is a development stage and it doesn't seem unusual for some to skip it. So try not to worry to much.

Oh it did mean my nice was an early walker, where as DD who crawled took longer to walk as she could already get around very quickly.

Ceit · 07/12/2023 09:25

I didn't ever crawl, and neither did my daughter. Straight from birth shuffling to walking.

Mabelface · 07/12/2023 09:32

4 kids, who crawled at 9 months, 2 at 13 months and one at 14 months. All adults who progressed to walking. 😉

CMOTDibbler · 07/12/2023 09:38

Mine didn't move himself around at all (not rolling, bum shuffling or anything) until he was 10 months old when he started cruising. Then the week before he was one I put him down on the floor and he shot off crawling at high speed. Then he was walking a few weeks later and never bothered crawling again. And with the walking there was no tottering around bit, or having to hold hands, he was just off.
8 months is very young to be worrying about it though, I know its hard with comparisons though

MinervatheGreat · 07/12/2023 09:38

Mine was a bit like this. Quote below:

Chubby & happy, didn’t move from the spot until one day ….

“DD only crawled at 19 months. She'd been bum shuffling since about 15 months so I wasn't expecting crawling at all. Finally walked at 21 months”

Dont worry.

Yep mine walked 8 months, it's scary as hell 😆

LBFseBrom · 07/12/2023 09:51

Do babies actually 'learn' how to crawl or do they just do it one day?

Op, some babies never crawl, they bum shuffle until they start pulling themselves up holding on to something and then walk. This is a fact.

I did not crawl and there's nothing wrong with me. My son spontaneously crawled from six months and was not taught.

Please stop worrying, I'm sure your baby is fine. Children are individuals are do things at different times, that is normal.

PlumpShady · 07/12/2023 09:57

My daughter didn't crawl 'properly' until about 11 months. She barely moved at all until then to be honest, just sat there like a potato while I worried myself silly about it. If it was absolutely necessary she would sort of drag herself across the floor using one arm and one leg to propel herself, but only for something she REALLY wanted.

Then she walked just after she turned 1 so the crawling phase was very short!

She's 2 now and runs, jumps, dances around and you'd never know she was so late to get on the move!

Anecdotally I've heard that girls are talkers and boys are movers and that's proved true for all the toddlers I know in the same bracket. So try not to worry , even though it's hard Flowers

threecupsofteaminimum · 07/12/2023 09:59

DS7 never crawled, he was a bum shuffler until he finally stood up and walked aged 21 months. He's absolutely fine and perfect in every way, don't worry!

Weallnamechangesometimes · 07/12/2023 10:12

Ds didn't crawl until 9.5 months he started walking running two weeks later. 8 months is still so young and she has already worked out how to get where she wants so why would she not use that way to get where she wants. Try not to worry she'll learn to walk someday if she learns to crawl or not.

Ariela · 07/12/2023 12:10

One of mine walked pretty much before crawling, but was a demon on rolling, would roll to try and get a toy, if not the right place would roll back then change angle by flinging the legs further or not as far and try again. In time, pulled themselves up on furniture, curtains etc and cruised then walked. Probably learned to crawl at the same time.
Really the longer they stay where you put them the easier for you it is IMHO.

Cdoc · 07/12/2023 12:12

My 9m old still doesn’t crawl, he gets himself into the position from sitting but then flattens onto his tummy and army crawls around. I’m not particularly worried at all! And grateful for being able to have the Christmas tree up with low hanging baubles

Cas112 · 07/12/2023 12:15
