Will my baby ever crawl?

My DD is 8 months old and her chosen method of getting around is pushing herself along with her legs while lay on her back. I'm not keen on her doing this as she is constantly rubbing the back of her head on the carpet! She doesn't even attempt to try and crawl, she can sit unaided but will always be trying to throw herself backwards so she can start back shuffling.
We do tummy time with her and try to encourage her to move forward on her tummy with her favourite toys etc but she gets really upset and just wants to back shuffle. We have also tried putting her into the crawling position which she is very sturdy in but she just lowers herself back down onto her tummy and onto her back again. She can't get herself into the sitting position unless we put her in it either, whereas babies who crawl are able to as they are already upright.
At the moment I really can't see how she will ever learn how to crawl doing this or even be able to pull herself up onto furniture! I wouldn't be concerned if she showed some signs of just army crawling but she doesn't even do that, she has never moved forwards on her front.

Has anyone else had experience with this, if so when did your baby learn to crawl?

My eldest couldn't even sit up until 8 months haha.

Crawled at 13 months; walked at 17 months.

blowfishh · 07/12/2023 12:33

Mine used to drag themselves around, they never did crawl. They walked at 12mo.

PollyPeep · 07/12/2023 12:36

@eeeex mine didn't show ANY signs of attempting to crawl until around 10 months and started crawling at 11 months. He started walking at 18 months and is now running and climbing everywhere, no different to any other typical toddler ☺️ I was concerned by 10 months as he was also slow to roll (7 months), but all seems fine now!

I wouldn't hold your breath, OP, neither of my DD's crawled til 11 months.

StillWantingADog · 07/12/2023 12:43

My dm tells me I was like this. Apparently never crawled at all. And then just walked. I’m 45 now and definitely get about ok!

CoodleMoodle · 07/12/2023 12:46

DD didn't crawl! She didn't move at all until she started cruising at about 10mo and then walked at 11mo. She didn't work out how to crawl until she was nearer to 2, it just wasn't something she was interested in. I only got her to crawl by taking her to soft play.

DS crawled a bit at around 10mo, but he didn't walk until nearer to 1 year.

9&5 now and perfectly fine.

Crawling late is a bonus ime. Dgs walked at 7 months. He was a living nightmare...

When I had my first child, my mum said "You'll spend the first two years teaching them to walk and talk, and the next sixteen begging them to sit down and be quiet". She wasn't far wrong.

Ds1 didn't crawl until he was nearly 1, if I recall correctly (he turned 30 this year, so my memory is a little foggy on the details). Ds2 started crawling just as ds1 started potty training - I had to have lightning quick reflexes to get to the potty once ds1 had used it, before ds2 could use it to try to pull himself to standing - which catapulted the contents all over him and the floor.

itsallabitofamystery · 07/12/2023 12:52

My youngest didn't. She did a worm type manoeuvre and could get about quite quickly doing that. Went on to walk at 16 months but never crawled.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies, they really are appreciated.
I will try not to worry about it, I go to baby sensory class every week and see other babies crawling about so it is so difficult to try and not compare! I'd also love to take her to soft play but can't really do that when she can't explore 🤣 guess I will just be waiting a bit longer and I will leave her to slide around on her back for as long as she needs to!

Understandable, I have a close friend whose DS is only 1 week older than my DD, and he WALKED before she had even crawled!

Whenever we met up I'd end up feeling like DD was 'behind' and with hindsight i wish I'd not worried at all because there was no need Smile

HiCandles · 07/12/2023 19:37

Don't worry at all. My DS did the lying on back shuffle about twice at 7 months, never did it again and then crawled at 12 months. By 13 months he was walking and by 14 months running, fast!
Be grateful for the ability to know she's where you left her for longer. It gets tiring pretty quick to turn around and find baby has moved to who knows where!

KnottyKnitting · 07/12/2023 19:41

DD1 wasn't even rolling over at 9 months. Within three weeks she had rolled, crawled and pulled herself up on the furniture. By 11 months she was walking!

MargotBamborough · 07/12/2023 19:45

My son didn't crawl until he was about a year old.

My daughter actually did that backwards head shuffling thing, it was really weird. I can't remember when she stopped doing that but she was definitely doing it in the summer at 7-8 months old. She's now 11 months old, has been crawling for a while and is on the point of walking.

Please watch the "Baby Race" episode of Bluey. We've all been there :)

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/12/2023 21:06

They all do it in their own time. DD never crawled-she bum shuffled which she seemed to like as she could carry stuff as well as move around. She stood around 18months and cruised a little then suddenly just walked at about 20months. I think they can only learn one thing at a time and adds thing was communication. She signed by 6 months and was talking in full sentences by 18months. But moving? Nope! DS on the other hand crawled very early and took his first steps on his first birthday-but needed speech therapy to help with the talking!

LBFseBrom · 07/12/2023 09:51

Do babies actually 'learn' how to crawl or do they just do it one day?

Op, some babies never crawl, they bum shuffle until they start pulling themselves up holding on to something and then walk. This is a fact.

I did not crawl and there's nothing wrong with me. My son spontaneously crawled from six months and was not taught.

Please stop worrying, I'm sure your baby is fine. Children are individuals are do things at different times, that is normal.

I think most babies do learn to crawl. Not taught by anyone, but themselves. Trying again and again!, often day after day, week after week, sometimes month after month, often crying with frustration until one day they can move forwards (backwards often comes a lot sooner)

irishmurdoch · 07/12/2023 23:07

My mother told me i walked across the room at 8 months and then never did it again until I was about one and a half! Babies are so random, you just can't compare when they reach different milestones...

Mercury2702 · 07/12/2023 23:09

My son didn’t really crawl till around 16/17 months then walked at 18 months. Everyone told me there must be a problem or he was late but my mum said I didn’t walk until 18 months either. He’s absoloutely fine now, he’s 7, plays football and is soo active

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 07/12/2023 23:11

One of mine never crawled, they rolled across the floor to get anywhere then eventually moved straight on to walking.

eeeex · 08/12/2023 09:28

Thank you everyone. It's so interesting to hear about all your babies and how they are all SO different!
Just watched the baby race bluey episode, how lovely 🥰

Please don't worry . My youngest stood up before he crawled. All babies are different but get there in the end. Whatever you do don't compare their progress to other children or listen to bragging mums . By the time they get to school most are physically at the same level.

Cosywintertime · 08/12/2023 09:47

Mine never crawled either, never attempted it, never even bum shuffled, just walked.

SeriouslyAgain · 08/12/2023 10:02

Mine never crawled. Did bum-shuffling (!) a tiny bit. Started pulling up from about 14 months.
Was talking in sentences before genuinely showing an interest in moving! I had a lot of 'concerned head tilting' from parents whose babies had crawled at 2 hours and were playing the French horn at 3 months 😂.
You can get a very skewed view of milestones as a new parent as all new parents want to show off 😂. (for what it's worth my Dd now county level in her main sport and very academic - not crawling has been irrelevant!)
