parvovirus

My 9 year old has been diagnosed with parvovirus. He didn't have a slapped cheek but he had a rash all over his body. It was very worrying. Did anyone else get the rash but not the slapped cheeks? Also, do you think it could have come from the dog ?

Wolfiefan · 06/11/2023 20:25

No it didn’t come from the dog.

blueberrymojito · 06/11/2023 20:30

No, it's a different illness to the one dogs have.

I had it a few years ago, distinctive lace rash all over, very stiff, achey joints (couldn't bend down to tie my shoe laces and hands swelled so much) night sweats, headache etc. It wasn't pleasant and lasted a few weeks. Daughter age 9 caught it off me but only had the rash without the other symptoms. It's supposed to be worse in adulthood.

FF1 · 06/11/2023 20:32

I'm sure the doctors know what they're talking about but just find it a bit weird that he's been diagnosed with parvovirus without actually having the cheeks. Did anyone get this? The rash all over his body does look similar to the ones on the internet but he just didn't get the flushed cheek.

Not everyone gets pink cheeks, you can be asymptomatic. It's important to keep your child away from pregnant women as it can be dangerous the unborn babies.

FF1 · 06/11/2023 20:53

Yes I will. He'll be off school until he's better.

Hi aware this is a couple of months old now, but can I ask how long the rash lasted? My dd has had a rash for 3 weeks GP suggested slapped cheek but everywhere online seems to say slapped cheek clears within 2 weeks

JoeCrackers · 02/05/2024 22:18

@Anxiousmumof

does hour DD still have the rash?

mine has had one for 2/3 weeks now but it fades and the comes back, it really upsetting her. Does yours look like this?

Yes! We’re on the 5th week now! I’m no longer sure it’s slapped cheek…

We all had it recently, was awful, looked just like that, came and went for weeks. It did go eventually

Is it just on the arms? My dd gets it arms & legs & now starting on the hands! Disapears for hours at a time then radomly comes back! Smooth to touch & does itch! I’m totally stumped with it.

TulipsAndZombies · 03/05/2024 09:01

yes arms, legs, hands and feet. Not always at the same time and changed frequently! Really weird

I am 6 weeks into slapped cheek as an adult. It’s bloody awful. Hands still not working and aches and pins and needles in one arm keeping me awake. The toddler is better (he gave it to me!) but the baby still has it. I am so fed up with this. Doc said it might be 8 weeks before we feel better, 3 weeks is ‘most’ people but it’s not unusual for recovery to take longer. Great.

edit - yes we all have the rash - arms, legs, hands, feet, cheeks. Baby and I both have it on our chest and back too. It comes and goes, is raised a bit like hives and THE ITCHING.

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 10:56

@Anxiousmumof arms, legs and hands. Sounds exactly same as yours, comes and goes. I’m just worried it will get worse as the weather gets warmer. We go to Turkey in 7 weeks just hope it’s gone by then

@TulipsAndZombies how long do you think it took to go?

Anxiousmumof · 03/05/2024 13:03

We fly to Tenerife in 2 weeks & im getting super anxious about it!! My gp has today sent photos of it to dermatology to get their opinion on it, they said should only take a few days to get back to us. Just realised in my last message I said it itches it doesn’t & it’s not raised completely flat. Can be fine all day then just appear no apparent triggers. When it first started her friend from school had slapped cheek so I presumed that but that was the 2nd April so the gp said it can’t be that. I’ve also requested a blood test just to put my mind at ease that theirs no underlying problems so hopefully by next week should get some answers. I’ll let you know.

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 18:39

@Anxiousmumof yes please do. I’m going to send a picture of it to my GP on Monday. It’s sounds the exact same as your daughter’s, not itchy or raised. Everything online said it’s should go away in a few weeks. Is your daughter ok about it? Mine is getting really self conscious. Fingers crossed yours goes away before the holiday

Anxiousmumof · 03/05/2024 20:01

Yes I’ll let you know the outcome. No luckily she’s not bothered by it I think she’s more annoyed by me constantly checking it lol. Does your daughter have any other symptoms or been ill?

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 23:13

No she never had the cold/sore throat or anything to start with. Just woke up one morning with the rash. The only thing is she said she feels a bit cold and shivery sometimes n the rash is really prominent. I just check her bed and it pretty much gone but she sleeps completely wrapped up in her duvet so I think the heat is bringing it out during the night. It’s been really red the last few mornings

Anxiousmumof · 03/05/2024 23:29

Yes my dd’s is more obvious when she wakes up on a morning then gradually fades then randomly appears through the day! Very strange….

Does your dd’s ever look lacy/mottled? So today the redness has gone now it looks more like mottled skin..

JoeCrackers · 04/05/2024 16:16

It actually looks just like that today. I was expecting it to be bad when she woke up this morning but it wasn’t. Hasn’t been sunny here at all today so it’s been ok

hailholyqueen · 09/05/2024 19:14

@AllThePotatoesAreSinging recently had slapped cheek as an adult and experiencing v similar symptoms, including pins and needles and pain in hands and feet and now have developed a slightly swollen foot. It's the gift that keeps on giving. 😔

I thought I was going to have to get my ring cut off!

Last night was the first night I had no pins and needles. 7 weeks. Hopefully that’s the end of it.

JoeCrackers · 10/05/2024 14:30

@Anxiousmumof

how your dd now? Mine’s seems to have cleared up. It’s pretty warm here today so will see when she gets in from school if that has brought it out again.

Yea same seems to have pretty much gone apart from occasional red cheeks but that could be the weather it’s been a hot week! The dermatologist said it looked like ‘ livedo reticularis which if it was permanent & didn’t disappear would need investigating but fingers crossed it’s definitely improved! I’m certain it was slapped cheek that’s just taken longer than usual to go. Glad you dd’s has gone.

JoeCrackers · 11/05/2024 10:09

Hopefully it is slapped cheek and will disappear for good soon. How long til you go on holiday?
DD just been sitting here drinking a cup of tea and her hands have flared up a bit. She was holding onto the mug so the heat must have brought it out
