My 2 year old swallowed an aqua bead…I called 111 and they told me to rush to hospital as they can swell and obstruct. Has anybody’s child done similar? Freaking out.

OP posts:
StarlightLime · 04/11/2023 20:13

Why aren't you rushing to hospital??

Chichimcgee · 04/11/2023 20:13

Maybe 111 thought you meant an orbeez? I don’t think aqua beads swell do they? Aren’t they the ones that stick together to make a picture? Hope he’s ok anyway

Was it in its dry state or already hydrated?

Yeah, which is it? The liquid filled ones or not?

OhNoForever · 04/11/2023 20:15

Follow medical advice, my god

Cheeesus · 04/11/2023 20:16

If these, squidgy, gel/liquid filled, then they can swell. If the type you spray to make a picture, they don’t.

If you accidentally swallow the beads

  • The beads contain no ingredients that are harmful to health, but we recommend seeking medical examination by a doctor.

Aqua beads are tiny and stick together when wet. They don't get bigger

dragonseal · 04/11/2023 20:18

Get to hospital

But that's assuming they're being used correctly by the correct age group and they clearly state on the same page that they are unsuitable for under 3's and that they adhere in contact with water.

People seem to be confusing the beads. These aqua beads.

But maybe OP is too and means water beads/orbeez.

Doesn't matter what they are. Get to hospital

Where do they say they swell? I don’t think ‘aqua beads’ can swell, the question is whether they were the little gel ones instead.

Yes it does. Aqua beads are not an issue. Water beads are.

We’re guessing that either 111 or the OP used the wrong word. Because Aquabeads don’t swell but orbeez, sometimes called water beads do.

So it matters which they are.

StillWantingADog · 04/11/2023 20:23

There is a whole section on the aquabeads website basically saying they’re harmless and non-toxic
if 111 has said a&e I’d go but not panic

Inyourwildestdreams · 04/11/2023 20:23

Get to hospital @TwoLittleRoses. Hope they get it sorted asap.

I think the issue with all these things is that there are so many brands etc on the market that it’s hard to know if they all act the same.

dementedpixie · 04/11/2023 20:25

@TwoLittleRoses can you clarify which beads they were as one is not going to cause harm and the other can.

dragonseal · 04/11/2023 20:26

saraclara · 04/11/2023 20:22

Yes it does. Aqua beads are not an issue. Water beads are.

That can be decided by the doctors at the hospital
