My 2 year old swallowed an aqua bead…I called 111 and they told me to rush to hospital as they can swell and obstruct. Has anybody’s child done similar? Freaking out.

I did not realise how deadly water beads could be. How are these not banned?!

Hope you’re okay OP- at least you saw that your 2yo swallowed it.

Unsure754 · 04/11/2023 20:33

They are banned in some countries, I remember from when I googled after my one year old ate one.

We had to take her to hospital but she was absolutely fine.

Hope all goes well.

just to clarify. We were at a&e when I sent this message. We rushed to hospital and they are not too concerned. Sending us home again. It was the ones your spray with water to make a picture, called aqua beads. I was freaking out as horror stories say they swell but these seem to be water beads. So hopefully the one my daughter has will pass through

It was the hard ones that you spray with water to make a picture.

@TwoLittleRoses great news, glad your little one is okay

TwoLittleRoses · 04/11/2023 20:50

Thanks. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping until I find it passed through

I’m glad she’s ok. I think 111 must have been confused but at least you’ve been reassured. Try not to worry

Aqua beads should be absolutely fine. They won't swell and aren't toxic. I wouldn't even bother digging through poo if mine swallowed one. It's similar to swallowing a sequin or a bead.

Doesn't matter what they are. Get to hospital

Of course it matters. If it’s an aqua bead it isn’t an emergency. If it’s a water bead that swells then it is.

saraclara · 04/11/2023 20:59

Sounds like 111 misunderstood and thought you are talking about a water bead too, OP. So really, Stop worrying. There is absolutely no need to go rummaging through your child's poo to check that it's been passed..

You are probably not going to find it! When my LO was a similar age he swallowed something that is ten times the size of an aqua bead and we were told to keep an eye out for it in his poo and we never spotted it. They are so tiny and definitely do not swell so don't worry too much if you don't find it.
