What age did you all stop breastfeeding?

To all breastfeeding mamas, I have a 7-month-old and I'm just curious: at what age do most of you stop breastfeeding? I realize everyone's journey is unique, which is exactly why I'm reaching out. How long do you think we should breastfeed to give our little ones the best start? Thanks!

DC1 was 13 months, I would've happily gone on for longer but was pregnant with DC2 and I don't know if that changed something as they just totally refused one day and never looked back!
DC2 was 15/16 months. I was feeling quite done and sick of being the only one able to put them to bed, so just tried not feeding one evening and it wasn't even noticed so I just didn't carry on!
I think it's recommended to BF until 2, but everyone is different with what they want to or can do.

10 months. I had originally (before my son was born) wanted to go to a year, but alas, he decided he’d try and rip my nipple off so that put paid to that! To be honest he wasn’t arsed and had sort of stopped looking for it by then anyway.

All mine self weaned at around 13- 14 months.

Just gradually ate more food and dropped feeds until just one a day left by 12 months

2.5yo as I wanted to TTC again and it wasn't working.

Only continued so long as DS wanted to and it was convenient to get him to sleep and calm him if upset.

My aim was 6 months.

I would recommend you do whatever you feel is right for you Op :) I think many people will give you different timescales.

Me: 5 months (was combi feeding through expressing due to lack of supply and stopped due to exhaustion)

Friend 1: 18 months

Friend 2: 11 months

Friend 3: 18 months

Friend 4: 6 months

Friend 5: 6 weeks (stopped due to several bouts of mastitis)

AegonT · 01/11/2023 12:59

First DD 3.5 years
Second DD I would like to stop at 2.5 years which is soon (I'm not enjoying feeding a toddler at bedtime this time round)

OldTinHat · 01/11/2023 13:19

Both of my DC stopped of their own choice at 9 months literally overnight. It was very strange.

shivawn · 01/11/2023 15:20

Around the 8 month mark. He was getting half breastmilk and half bottles from 7 months. It was a good time for us and I hope to do the same with my new baby.

SquigglePigs · 01/11/2023 15:29

DD weaned fully at 4 yrs 8 months but it had been sporadic for a month or two at that point.

TakeMe2Insanity · 01/11/2023 15:34

At 12 months as he’d starting biting and had quite a few teeth. So painful.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/11/2023 15:47

3DC.

DD1 stopped BFing at 15 months old, I was 6 months pregnant at the time and she was only having a bedtime feed by the end.

DD2 was a very enthusiastic BFer, I went on a business trip abroad just after her 2nd birthday thinking that would end things (she was having just a single BF a day at that point), I walked back in the house and the first thing she did was ask for milk. It did reduce to weekend morning feeds only over the next few months. When I got pregnant I got regular updates from her 'that's not working' she told me as my milk production dried up. She had her last BF at 2y10m, I was 3 months pregnant.

DS had a CMPA and did not like any of the dairy alternatives. He breastfed until he was 4 (around the time he grew out of his allergy). Like DD2 he wasn't feeding every day by the end, his last few feeds were in a cluster because he had chickenpox then he never asked again.

Longer than most but been judged for it so won't say the age

Same!

DresdenDoll · 01/11/2023 15:49

DS 27m
DD 2.5 years

JaninaDuszejko · 01/11/2023 15:52

Should say you should stop when it suits you and don't worry about what others say or their experiences because every mother and every child is different.

DD2 reversed cycled when I went back to work which was exhausting but the other two were quite happy with BFing when I was with them and to eat and drink alternatives when I wasn't (I went back to work when they were 9 months old).

Bluetune · 01/11/2023 15:58

Eldest I stopped at around 15 months. Felt pressure to stop over comments about it being ‘weird’ feeding past 1. This time round I’ve realised I don’t care what anyone else thinks, still feeding at 18 months and aiming to continue until 2 at least, unless she self weans earlier but I can’t see that happening!

Pollywoddles · 01/11/2023 16:03

Still going on demand at 19 months so that’s at least 4 feeds a day and 1-3 during the night. Plan to go until 2 and then I’ll stop pumping at work for her midday feed and I’ll wean at night and see what happens.

Pumpkinshine · 01/11/2023 16:04

1.5 yrs (weaning was easy)
2.5 yrs (weaning not easy, but fast)
2.5 yrs (weaning not easy)

evryevrytime · 01/11/2023 16:07

22 months and 15 months for my two.

Abs8 · 01/11/2023 16:07

Exactly 3 years. I would've stopped sooner, but my Dd didn't take to a bottle.

HappierTimesAhead · 01/11/2023 16:09

2 years 5 months

Biasquia · 01/11/2023 16:09

Dc1 2 weeks
dc2 1 month
dc3 2.5 years. All TT it turned out but only diagnosed on dc3.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/11/2023 16:10
  1. But you probably mean 14 months! Grin
Swifty1newmama · 01/11/2023 16:17

We’re at 7months now, was starting to worry about how it’ll be when I go back to work next month! Before I had a baby I thought it’d be amazing to be able to feed for 6m, now it’s such an easy thing to do that I don’t want to stop quite yet!

Mourningmorningsleep · 01/11/2023 16:18

3 years exactly, following a month of daily warnings that my boobs would stop working on their third birthday,. You might be like me and not get much choice in the matter. I was ready to stop at 2 but I wanted to go back to sleep at nights more.
