What age did you all stop breastfeeding?

To all breastfeeding mamas, I have a 7-month-old and I'm just curious: at what age do most of you stop breastfeeding? I realize everyone's journey is unique, which is exactly why I'm reaching out. How long do you think we should breastfeed to give our little ones the best start? Thanks!

3.5 with DD. No idea how long I’ll feed DS for, he’s 7 months.

AppropriateAdult · 01/11/2023 10:42

Between 2.5 and 3.5 years for each of my three.

INeedNewShoes · 01/11/2023 10:42

At 23m. DD couldn't have cow's milk so BF until she was 2 saved her from having to have allergen-free formula which I didn't want her to have unless it was necessary.

And I really can't stress enough how in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter.

Never put BF ahead of you.

Same here Grin

To answer the title though I was 39 when I stopped breastfeeding.

I also just wanted to say that until I joined a bf group I just thought everyone weaned before 1 because I knew very few people who'd bf, was under lots of pressure from family from pregnancy to use formula and anyone I knew who did breastfeed weaned after 6 months or at most a year.

Seeing mum's in my bf group feeding older babies and young children really opened my eyes that it's firstly doable while working or having more than one child, and secondly it really normalised it for me and made me realise it happens much more often than people realise since it's often only done at home. If I hadn't seen that I'd have been feeling under pressure to have weaned ds already.

Just goes to show that representation and exposure to all the different feeding journeys is so important in helping women make the right choice for them and realise what's possible!

DS was fed till 3.5 (though by that point was only really at night).
Just 3 weeks into DDs journey. Hope it will be at least as long.

Cobwobs · 01/11/2023 10:45

13 months and 12 months, it was hard work but I was determined to get to a year with both of them

Cowlover89 · 01/11/2023 10:47

Will stop when my son is 2 and probably feed my daughter for a bit after when she turns 2

Legomania · 01/11/2023 10:47

11 months for both

Switcher · 01/11/2023 10:48

7 months, 9 months and over 3 years. She still sucks on them at 5. My husband got quite arsy about it.

BalletBob · 01/11/2023 10:49

3.5 ish for eldest DC. Similar for middle child. Currently BFing youngest who is 1. We'll just keep going until it feels natural to stop.

I have a couple of friends who BF their newborns but did not receive adequate support to continue so stopped when their babies were a few weeks old. I have another friend who was still BF her son at bedtime when he was 7.

Mumofteenandtween · 01/11/2023 10:50

2 years 3 months for dd
Nearly 5 years with ds

I remember when dd was about 3 days old dh helpfully shared that his mum had breastfed him for 6 months and I started to cry because I couldn’t imagine carrying on that long. At that point I was aiming for a week. Then I aimed for a month. Then 3 months. Then 6 months. Then a year. Then 2 years as that was what the WHO advised. The final 3 months was us convincing her that cows milk was just as nice.

With ds I planned to do 2 years but when he got to 2 he didn’t want to give up and my desire to give up was weaker than his desire to stop. Finally stopped just before he was 5 by giving him the choice of having milky or reading in bed at bedtime. Luckily he loved his books!

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 01/11/2023 10:50

A week before he turned one!

I always said I wanted to stop around then before he became "aware" if that makes sense.

I also wanted my body back after a year🤣

Imperfectp3rf3ction · 01/11/2023 11:04

Dc 1 - 6 weeks =( ( lack of info)
Dc 2 - 2 and a bit years ( from around 18 months was only a night time feed)
Dc 3 we are 10 months aiming for 2 years again unless she feels all done sooner. =)

vegsoup · 01/11/2023 11:12

First child about 22 months, current child is 19 months and not slowing down (unfortunately for me as I'm pregnant again and the pain is insane, but I'd rather put up with that than lose any more sleep trying to wean for the time being!)
If it wasn't so painful I'd happily carry on and tandem feed, but I think weaning is inevitable soon.

Mummyme87 · 01/11/2023 11:19

3 weeks with DS1 and 2.5yrs with DS2

Esssa · 01/11/2023 11:20

My daughter is 2 years 8 months and still feeds somewhere between 0-2 times a day. Just depends on the day. She can feed first thing and before bed. If there's a big upset and she's struggling she can feed them too but otherwise I offer food or drink. My little boy is 5.5 months and I intend to feed him for as long too. So basically I don't know yet!

Pacificisolated · 01/11/2023 11:21

2 years and 7 months, we only stopped because I was pregnant and it had become quite painful (and my toddler was down to only a bed time feed). I miss it so much though that I’m so anxious to do everything in my power to make it work when my next baby arrives. I will likely stop at two children so I’ll probably feed for longer next time if I can and my baby wants it.
At seven months though I was definitely a bit over breastfeeding at times. Baby will start eating more solid food soon and it may start to feel more manageable.

jutsand · 01/11/2023 11:38

3.5 years for DC1. DC2 is 1.5 years and still breastfeeding, I plan to continue until she's 3.5 to make it fair!

SylvieLaufeydottir · 01/11/2023 11:42

I fed both of mine to around 2y 8m. It was an incredibly useful tool to have in the arsenal during the early toddler period. By the end it was one feed a day and easily skipped, so I stopped offering and distracted them if they asked and it was very straightforward.

MoochingAbout · 01/11/2023 11:46

1st child - 3 years
2nd child - 2.5 years
3rd child - 2.5 years

In short, a reallllyyyyyy long time. To be honest I probably went longer than I would have liked, but I was determined to do as much as I could to prevent the kids developing the allergies I was riddled with as a child!

Olika · 01/11/2023 11:48

My DD decided at around 14 months that she doesn't want breast milk anymore. She started refusing one of the feedings, then two, then three and that was end of that. Made ending easy as milk just stopped producing.

mondaytosunday · 01/11/2023 11:52

First one fir five months then I went back to work. Second for a year but down to one feed a day by then. She refused it night before her first birthday.
I'd say six months is fine - I wasn't going to pump or anything I was fine with it being done..
