What age did you all stop breastfeeding?

To all breastfeeding mamas, I have a 7-month-old and I'm just curious: at what age do most of you stop breastfeeding? I realize everyone's journey is unique, which is exactly why I'm reaching out. How long do you think we should breastfeed to give our little ones the best start? Thanks!

3 feeds a day at 12 months then cut the first thing in the morning feed. Then cut the before midday nap feed then cut the before bed feed by maybe 15 months old.

Lionoso · 01/11/2023 10:24

Just over two years. It was just a bed time feed for quite a while by that point.

Jk987 · 01/11/2023 10:24

When she started clamping down on my nipple at around 7 months - ouch!

I fed my 1st DC my DD until 3-4 months. I no longer had enough milk for he after becoming ill myself. I fed my 2nd DC my eldest DS for about 9 months. I fed youngest DS until about 14 months. I noticed with each pregnancy I had more milk.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/11/2023 10:26

Dc1 9 months, dc2 12 months

theDudesmummy · 01/11/2023 10:27

About 18 months

longlostauthor · 01/11/2023 10:29

Fed my daughter until she was 3.5 and currently feeding my 12 month old son but hoping he cuts back himself long before then…

TheLoveIsReal · 01/11/2023 10:29

It’s recommended to breastfeed for a minimum of 2 years.

We’re still feeding at 3 and no intentions to stop until she wants to self wean.

I’m also feeding her baby sister.

BananaSlug · 01/11/2023 10:29

Longer than most but been judged for it so won't say the age

AliMonkey · 01/11/2023 10:30

exclusively bf to 7 months, then mixed (expressed and formula when at nursery, bf when with me), , gradually reducing until stopped completely at 13m. Same for both dc.

Lots of things are recommended but are not always possible.

At 2 years, pretty much around his birthday. It came to a natural stop for us both after months of reduced feeding. I was happy how it ended but was a little sad too.

underneaththeash · 01/11/2023 10:31

Exactly 16 weeks with first two and 12 weeks with the second.
not a breastfeeding fan!

stop when you’ve had enough.

Ostryga · 01/11/2023 10:31

I fed until 3, but towards the end Dd would go a couple of days in between feeds and stopping was really easy. I just stopped offering and when she asked just distracted her. No tears at all!

TomAllensWhiskMic · 01/11/2023 10:32

Around 11 months old with both of them.

cptartapp · 01/11/2023 10:32

Three months both times as was going back to work. Felt much more in control and we all slept so much better.

Happitwist · 01/11/2023 10:33

I started to combi feed at 6 months with the goal to stop. Stopped totally by around 8 months. Was my choice, glad I made it, and will likely do the same with the next one :)

flawless29 · 01/11/2023 10:34

@Happitwist He is also on combi feed, so I am thinking the same as you

2 years 9 months for DC1. I was pregnant and I didn't want DC1 to think stopping nursing was connected to the new baby on the way.

2 years 4 months for DC2. I had terrible excema on my nipples and it was just too painful to continue.

I tell them both it was 2 1/2 years so there's no competition between them.

The timing and the reason is going to be unique to each breastfeeding relationship. You will make the decision you make for you and your baby based on your own reasons. And because of this, whatever decision you make will be the right decison no matter how it compares to others.

Good luck with however your breastfeeding journey goes from here.

Same

TheShellBeach · 01/11/2023 10:37

Four and a half (years) was my longest.

Fourteen months was the shortest.

The other two were fed for coming up to two years.

Lavender14 · 01/11/2023 10:39

So apparently the longer you go for, the more benefit to mum and baby and the recommendation is at least 2 years but there's a whole load of other factors to consider like the impact on maternal mental and physical health etc.

I'm still feeding ds at 11 months and we've no plans to stop yet, I think as long as its working well and is manageable for me and baby then I'll just follow his lead on it. Tbh it took us about 8 months to get into the swing of things where weight/ latch etc weren't an issue so now I'm really enjoying it. I'm hoping that eventually we'll get down to a morning, after work and bedtime feed and then just take it as it comes. Tentatively aiming for 2 years but I'd love another child in there too so if we're lucky enough then it'll also depend on how I find feeding while pregnant etc.

I do believe any length of time is better than no length of time and I found in the early days it helped me to have 6 months as a 'goal' but there's no need to put yourself under huge pressure with it either. Follow your baby and your body's lead and trust your instincts. What's right for one isn't always right for another.

Sprogonthetyne · 01/11/2023 10:39

20 months for the firstand 2.5 years with the second. Both times initiated by me, but they both got over it and stopped asking within a few days.

Tuesday11 · 01/11/2023 10:40

DC1 - 7 months
DC2 - was bottle fed
