Clashing colours and rainbow stripes or little dude/fairy princess how do you dress your child?

I love bright colours, especially if they clash and try to avoid the head to toe pink/blue. I also hate slogans, (especially on babies) trainers, velour tracksuit trousers, combat gear etc. I know I'm too fussy about this - so I was wondering how does everyone else dress their children?

I have given up trying to dress mine - I just close my eyes and hope we don't meet anyone we know when she has chosen a particularly vile colour combination

Tutter · 04/03/2008 15:58

tbh like a mini version of how i dress dh

well i don't actually dress dh, but i often buy for him

polo shirts and jeans

very boring

hate bob the builder dungarees

Sunshinemummy · 04/03/2008 15:59

Don't like twee cartoon characters on clothes, although I have given in to DS's Cars obsession and bought him some Cars stuff from H&M. He would wear them every day if I gave him the chance.

do not like character stuff. prefer 'real' clothes
like clashing colours, stripey tights, crocs, bright colours

DD looks amazing in black, but very hard to find toddler clothes in black or even dark colours

luckily she also looks amazing in bright colours!

don't like sportswear or trainers as everyday wear for children of any age although i appreciate they can be very comfy , easy to wash and cheap.

PotPourri · 04/03/2008 16:02

My two girls have beautifull clotehs (shame their mum doesn't match!!). My mum constantly buys them lovely clothes. Fairly feminine, but not all pinks - lots of brown and DD1 loves blue things and boys things too.

Seriously, they look like they are just off a catwalk most days. Really trendy but tasteful

sagacious · 04/03/2008 16:08

dd wears ds's old spiderman t-shirts

Charming retro I like to call it

oliviaelanasmum · 04/03/2008 16:09

My kids are better dressed than me! Dd1 (6) favours long jumper/dresses with skinny jeans, leggings and baseball boots.
DD'S 2&3 i have total control over and they wear a mix of bright funky clothes to pink princess frou-frou! This is one of my favorites vests of dd3 if only it was warmer so she could wear it to show it off!
On sunday i took dd3 to brownie church parade in a black victorian style frock coat, matching dress, and matching victorian style bonnnet.
I like them to look a bit different

Blimey just went to wash the dishes and all these answers appeared. Reason I was prompted to post is that I was looking on eBay for 6-9 or 9-12 clothes for DS and it was ALL army gear, slogan T-shirts, mini jeans and sports gear. I just wondered where all the nice bright quite unisex clothes have gone.

Don't like character clothes or sports wear. Not keen on the head to toe in pink look on little girls either.

My boys wear jeans most of the time, with jumpers or long sleeved tops.
I like clothes that stand out a bit too, like the Boden printed shorts & trousers. I am a fan of bright colours too.

I'm not too keen on the head to toe blue for boys pink for girls.

So I try and buy bright stripes, yellow, orange, grean, brown for ds. He has olive colouring so can pull off bold colours. I also think he looks good in black. But you don't get many black baby clothes.

I think baby boys look adorable in dunagrees and chord. I can't stand babies in tracksuits. Screams tacky.

We do often get comments on how lovely he looks. I'm lucky because i sometimes get hand me down from babygap and their clothes are so adorable. I'd never buy them though as it's not worth it for the time they spend in them.

Mercy · 04/03/2008 16:21

My dd, nearly 7, dresses in all sorts of things but fortunately is slowly going off pink everything. Her current favourite outfit is a pair of skater style trousers worn with a long sleeve top and a contrasting short-sleeved top over it, boots and furry lined body warmer She's just as happy in a flowery dress though.

Tbh, I'm just grateful to find anything that fits her.

Ds,4, basically wears trousers or jeans with plain or stripey tops, he has a couple of character tops (Thomas, Brum)

theUrbanDryad · 04/03/2008 16:23

i love dungarees for ds (14 months) - i think he looks really cute in them. most of his stuff is hand-me-downs (thank you mehdismummy! ) so we've got a lovely mix of jeans, t-shirts, little shirts etc. he doesn't wear trainers as i like him to be in properly fitted Clarkes shoes, but i have a fondness for him in little combats!

H&M is good for funky baby/toddler clothes, as is Next.

Hate 'merchandise' like bloody Peppa Pig and Dora also Thomas etc. for boys.

My two are mostly in Next as that's what money permits! Combats / jeans, LS T Shirt or Jumper / Hoodie. Best stuff from Boden or local kids designer shop.

Have to say I am obsessive!! Get very bored with their clothes very quickly, plan all outfits night before and lay them out ready ... don't trust anyone else to choose their clothes. esp. not DP.

OverMyDeadBody · 04/03/2008 19:27

No merchandise crap or stupid slogans, although DS has a few old school retro tops of mine (when those tiny little t shirts where all the craze about 10 yrs ago!) which fit him really well.

Quirky stuff I like. Lots of cords and earthy colours, wooly jumpers, stripes, layers, vintage style trainers in wacky colours.

I don't like most of the boys clothes in Next tbh. Too straight

Tracky bums only allowed for sport.

OverMyDeadBody · 04/03/2008 19:29

wow that does sound obsessive poppy!

I have found an easier solution, pretty much every item of clothing DS owns could be paired successfully with others, so most trousers go with most tops and jumpers, so whatever he chooses still usually works! Maybe that's bordering on obsessive too...I don't know.

MrsBadger · 04/03/2008 19:31

as with tutter's ds, dd mostly wears outfits I'd be happy to be seen in

plain tees and trousers, cord or denim skirts, no brands, no characters, no slogans
she does wear pinafores more than I do though

tummytickler · 04/03/2008 19:31

Hi -
I am a little crazy when it comes to my kids clothes - i hate slogans , sportswear and clothes that are too 'grown up', and i have given away so much brand new stuff that people have given me because its not my taste.
I am often told that my kids look like they are in WW2!!!

dd's age 6 and 2 wear dresses, chunky/hand knit jumpers, usually with trousers underneath, also skirts and tops (no denim, or tat) lots of petticoats, tweed, corduroy.

ds 5 years - stripey tops, hooded tops, knitted jumpers, jeans, cords.

ds 6 months - trousers with feet, hand knitted jumpers, loads of clashing sripes (lovely organic ones by Serendipity - gorge), sleepsuits in day etc. Babies should be in soft comfy clothes so mine dont have denim until 12 months (i know i may be mad!)

I am REALLy fussy and dont like the girls to look too grown up, thay wear clunky shoes o r boots (DMs).

However i do it all pretty cheaply (second hand / sales / ebay) although what i save hear i really splash out on some other stuff (organoc for baby for eg).

talkingmongoose · 04/03/2008 19:32

My main snobbery is NO denim on babies. Ditto any kind of shoes before they can walk.

nickytwotimes · 04/03/2008 19:34

Agree with no shoes before they can walk.
I have 19mth ds and I like him in fairly plain/neutral colours, thick combat type trousers, cotton jumpers and cardies. Practical, but cute!

Wilkie · 04/03/2008 19:34

DS dresses like a 'dude'. Combats, polo shirts, trainers, funky jumpers and shirts

HATE character/disney clothes, ditto dungarees. He is 13 months

I dressed him in rompers and dungarees until he was 3 months for comfort

notnowbernard · 04/03/2008 19:34

I gave up trying to dress DD1 myself long ago. She insists on picking her clothes each day (she's 4.3)

Sometimes she gets it right, other times it's frankly awful (seasonal mis-matches a speciality)

I'm pleased when we get through a day without a Disney Princess outing

ruddynorah · 04/03/2008 19:35

i like bright clothes for dd, and the odd bit of pink here and there. mostly i like her in greens and yellows. and i love boy jeans on her, more comfy and soft than girl jeans i find. girl jeans tend to have too much embellishment for my liking. normally she's in boy jeans with a girly top, no slogans but maybe puff sleeves or a tunic top or something. love zara and my dad sends fabulous clothes over from france. she's 21 months.
