Clashing colours and rainbow stripes or little dude/fairy princess how do you dress your child?

I love bright colours, especially if they clash and try to avoid the head to toe pink/blue. I also hate slogans, (especially on babies) trainers, velour tracksuit trousers, combat gear etc. I know I'm too fussy about this - so I was wondering how does everyone else dress their children?

dd1 is a typical girls. loves wearing pink. but also likes khaki.

dd2 is jeans/t-shirt kinda girl.

dd3 is a just funny with her clothes choices.

Kindersurpise · 04/03/2008 19:43

DD dresses herself now (she is almost 6yo) and loves mixing patterns and colours. Sometimes she looks very funky, sometimes more like an explosion in a paint factory.

DS started dressing himself recently too (3.5yo), he favours baggy trousers and stripy t-shirts. Also spidermann/Cars/dragon tshirts. He loves his Scotland rugby shirt as his Grandad has one the same.

Anyone looking for lovely stripy and plain colour clothes, check out Kidsshouldbekids, I have recommended their clothes on here before. It is my favourite online shop, the stripy t-shirts are great.

I too hate anything militaristic or slogany, but DS does own a few things with NEXT emblazoned on them (wow what a boast a Next t-shirt! )

I buy everything from local NCT and other nearly new sales. If you're wondering where all the nice non-slogan second hand stuff is, it's at NCT. Or rather, in my house, as I'm famous for gutting the sale rack to within an inch of its life, and then doing the same to the toys.

I keep my eye out at the charity shop too - have had some amazing finds (dressing up stuff mostly but also coats), but it's expensive compared to the nearly news, and you have to wade through a load of crap to find the good stuff.

DS used to look lovely and colour co-ordinated. Now he's fallen in love with some vile tartan nylon trousers that someone hid in amongst a job lot of t-shirts I bought. And toddler boys clothes do tend to get a bit beaten up.

Reading this, I think I'm a bit obsessive about DS's clothes too, but in a different way from most of the posters.

TummyTickler - you sound like a dresser after my own heart - I love handknits on babies. I think I must live in a town where chav clothes are the norm so my kids stand out a bit, oh now I can't ever let on where I live.
Kindersurprise - thanks for that link looks perfect.
Charity shops are great and luckily chavtown is quite heavy with them. I have been known to sit and unpick the NEXT logo from the front of a pinafore. Obsessive I know !

I put DD in whatever everyone else has bought her. She's the only grand daughter on both sides, so I don't really get a look in.

Poppychick · 04/03/2008 20:58

Who is buying the merchandised Peppa Pig / Dora stuff then? Cos I'm sick of seeing it in the shops ...

Kindersurpise · 04/03/2008 20:59

Here in Germany we have loads of childrens second hand shops. We also have a childrens clothes bazaar in many church halls or in the kindergartens.

The clothes bazaars are good, you take your clothes along, and pay for the hire of a table in the church hall (you can take a cake instead of paying which is then sold in the cafe). You can sell all the childrens clothes/toys etc. I have often picked up lovely clothes for a fraction of the new price.

They tend to be good fundraisers for the church/kindergarten too.

Hulababy · 04/03/2008 20:59

On the whole my 5yo DD is better dressed than me.

DualCycloneCod · 04/03/2008 21:05

whatever I can get in tesco or asda or handed down! Cheapo? Moi? yes.

BigBadMouse · 04/03/2008 21:18

Can't stand slogan stuff or things with the brand name written all over it - like hell is my child be an advertising board for next etc.

Disney is awful too.

I don't like things that are too grown up and can't see the point in beige and pastel coloured childrens clothes - really doesn't reflect my DCs personalities at all - they are much more rainbow and bright colours.

So glad that DC3 will be our DS1 so I can get rid of all the pink! WOOHOO

tummytickler · 04/03/2008 21:32

Underneath Pearls hand knitted cardis and petticoats i must confess to a Peppa Pig t-shirt .
I would never have allowed it but she got it for Christmas and loved it soooooo much and was sooooo sweet when she got it that i relented!

She also has several Rolling Stones t-shirts!

Kindersurpise · 04/03/2008 21:38

I don't even know what (who) Peppa Pig is.

PortAndLemon · 04/03/2008 21:45

I don't like character clothes. Unfortunately DS does, so I tend to compromise by letting him wear character pyjamas.

BrownSuga · 04/03/2008 21:46

no slogans, no character clothes. mostly preppy, trous/polo, trous/shirt/vest type of thing.

DualCycloneCod · 04/03/2008 22:40

mn hatred of character clothes again
let em wear it fgs oy ponces.

Vulgar · 04/03/2008 22:43

I let Ds have character clothing but for some reason I hate the pyjamas.

Pyjamas must be tasteful.

ALMummy · 04/03/2008 22:57

I despise slogans. I must admit DD does wear a lot of pink but not pale insipid pink, strong bold pink because she does actually really suit it. I love the Next childrens ranges. Each season you can dash in there and snatch things at random of the shelves and it will pretty much all go together. I love how they manage to tie in all the separates and I love little pinafores and long flowery frocks in the summer - Blooming Marvelous do some lovely ones.

For DS I like GAP long sleeved T shirts. He looks good in blue, red and grey. Combats, jeans, trainers, hiking boots but NEVER timberland. Shorts and sleeveless t shirts in the summer with sandals and I love stripes. Lots and lots of stripes on kids in our house.

fruitcorner · 04/03/2008 23:00

My two eldest children - 4.5 and 3 - dress themselves and I have little say over what they wear. As long as their choice is vaguely weather appropriate then I let them dress how they want unless it's an important smart occassion. I do buy clothes that I like, stripey tops and lots of patterns etc for my daughter but she wears such bizarre combinations of clothes that she always looks like some scarecrow child. All my kids seem to be dirt magnets as well and are heavy on their clothes so it's a waste to spend money on clothes so I buy in supermarkets or sales and welcome hand me downs.
