Clashing colours and rainbow stripes or little dude/fairy princess how do you dress your child?

I love bright colours, especially if they clash and try to avoid the head to toe pink/blue. I also hate slogans, (especially on babies) trainers, velour tracksuit trousers, combat gear etc. I know I'm too fussy about this - so I was wondering how does everyone else dress their children?

my little ones 'survived' in white baby grow and jumper over the top till about 1...

with the occassional pair of shorts for the boy and a dress for the girls.

now however, DD1 likes twirly skirts and long sleeved tops under t'shirts; DS likes jumper and jeans; DD2 loves stripy tights and pink dresses.

i hate the t'shirts that say 'little monster' etc, it's especially difficult to find good quality boys clothes... anywhere!

Mainly take inspiration from characters in films...
Violet Baudelaire
Little House on the Prairie
Lyra
Leon
DD likes prom goes punk with crinkled hair, tartan dress, net underskirts and spiderweb tights
we also like 70's stripy colour combos
60's minidresses & skirts with funky tights and bright colour knee boots
50s style cotton dresses for summer or A line short cotton print dresses
Knee length socks
Boden velvet cropped trousers with pirate suede boots were popular this winter
Stripes & crazy patterns always good
If I buy new stuff then its mainly the Danish brands.
Characters - Hello Kitty or Retro rockstars
No brand names, no grey, not much black, no smock tops or mini adult stuff. I am a fan of quantity of clothes, mostly second hand, and my dd doesn't wear many outfits more than once!

dd3 looking adorable today in Boots Mini Mode (some very nice stuff if you trawl) outfit - navy and white striped rollneck with navy leggings and red pinafore dress top

this

Boden - if I lots of cash - or H & M. I have bought a couple of bundles of Boden clothes from EBay. Always good condition and they wear really well. So even if you really like something and pay full price for it you can always sell it on later. My DD wears lots of brown/purple/green. Will avoid pink at all times.

Minkus · 06/03/2008 16:55

stripeybump that's a brilliant site, really lovely items. (Quickly adds to favourites)

elkiedee · 06/03/2008 19:43

Actually I quite like tops which say "little monster" - if I had a daughter I wouldn't want ones which said "little princess" - I'd happily dress her in DS's "mini monster" vests and a lot of his other clothes though. And I've met a couple who have an pic online of their son in a t-shirt saying "Chaos. Disorder. Confusion. My work here is done". Which I did think was very funny, and would probably put my ds in a top saying that if I had one or found it an affordable price! I gather it may well have been quite apt at the time he was wearing it, as he refused to sleep at night for a while.

iamdingdong · 06/03/2008 19:51

hate slogans and branded stuff. I try to buy my twin girls similar but different things but this is not always possible - I reject things I love because there isn't a second option available! They like skirts, dresses and pink, I don't, so we compromise...which is not easy with 4yos

Mamazon · 06/03/2008 19:57

i would like Ds to wear jeans and nice bright tops but he is such a stocky build i cant find things to fit.
so he ends up in tracksuit bottoms and T shirts or baggy combat style trousers.

DD is different every day. one day it will be cute and girly in a lovely print dress the next it will be combats a hoody and some timberland boots.

neither wear character clothing though, i can't stand it

I'm a lazy shopper so it's mail order everything. Mostly Boden as their stuff is not too grown up and is not full of trashy brandy.

DS (8) will still wear what I tell him, so he's in either Boden trs or M&S chinos and a boden top. In summer, shorts with boden applique or big print bright t shirts. A few fat face shirts if they don't have fatface written all over them. The prints are cool, same for Monsoon boys stuff.

DD1 (6) wears boden jeans and jumper dresses or applique t shirts. In the summer boden hippy or shift dresses.

DD2 (3) wears DD1s old boden floral baggies with plain tops. Same as DD1 in summer aswell as cropped floral trs and plain t shirts.

Am I lazy or what!?

I hate branded clothes (Next are terrible for that), designer labels on children is so crap too.

Agree with the denim thing on babies.

Really hate trashy sparkly spangly 'Barbie' type girls clothes.

Let children be children not 6 year olds dressed like prostitutes!!!!

Clarabumps · 06/03/2008 21:01

although i had a boy and am not a great fan of pink- i do like girls to look like girls..i hate seeing little girls with boys bowl cuts dressed in what my mother describes as "mud colours"( those colours that don't seem to have any pigment, as though everything ahs been shoved together in a boil wash!) not that i'm advocating little britney fashion. plus the denim thing on babies is just silly- it's too rough on their skin. it'd be like us wearing a steel wool jumper...errr nooope!!!

carmenelectra · 06/03/2008 22:19

Love Next for boys and girls.

Love mamas and papas, Boots,Next, M&s and that sort of thing for my little baby ds2.Quite like babies dressed like babies, blues, pinks, neutrals, rompers rather than jeans etc. Ds2 does wear both though cos he has had combats and jeans bought for him, even if if think hes maybe abit little. I do like em to look like little lads when they are up and walking though.

I do quite like some slogans for little kids, toddlers etc.

Ds1 who is 8 usually wears jeans and tshirt in day or maybe smart v necked jumper if we are going out, or maybe a nice Ted Baker top to go with jeans. Sometimes combats or tracky bottoms and a sports top or football shirt. A wide variety.

Dont get the Boden obsession on here? But some of the little kid stuff is quite cute i suppose.

spot on RR. Clothes for the parents, not the kids.

Apparently everyone hates slogans on t-shirts? (Ok, i never had any either...)

but what about bloody Ramones t-shirts and the like for babies? Why not stick your vinyl collection on their pram instead?!

MegBusset · 06/03/2008 22:48

When DS (12mo) was younger I bought bundles of tops off eBay so he ended up in bog standard Next/Mothercare stuff. Now I tend to buy a bulk order from Adams whenever he goes up a size, and I love bright stripey stuff, though budget tends to dictate what I buy -- if it's in the sale, I get it!

My only absolute rule is no combats.

Iphigeneia · 07/03/2008 09:11

I choose good, plain, cheap and don't care if they get ruined 1st time out basics from Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury etc. But for the nicer stuff, have found that Captain Tortue is brilliant - lots of mix and match, not too pink for girls, not too blue for boys, and great value for money 'cos it washes and wears really well.

Anyway, that's my tuppence thoughts added ...

ScubaDuba · 07/03/2008 09:12

I laugh when I see baby boys in proper button-up shirts with collars - a look often compounded with a tank-top!!! How ridiculous is that?! Why not go the whole hog and get them a pipe, slippers and flat-cap too. Ordinary t-shirts, trousers and joggers are all any kid needs.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 07/03/2008 09:50

I am bordering on the obsessive when it comes to clothes for DD2, as DD1 is too old now, at 13 to let me dress her completely (although clothing is only purchased by mutual consent).

I hate obvious designerwear, although rather alot of the stuff I buy is classed as designer, but children's designer and without specific branding or logos (hate 'em). I love the Scandinavian brands like Katvig and Mini A Ture. The reason being is that Britain has largely lost its way with childrenswear, and it is so hard to find stuff that's quirky, comfy and practical and still looks like children's clothing. I hate, hate, hate nasty grown-up looking clothes on small children, or anything with a mahoosive logo (agree, Next is terrible for that). I also hate that done up like a dog's dinner look, where you'd be afraid to let them eat spaghetti or an ice cream in case their precious clothes get spoiled. Kids should be kids.

BTW, almost EVERYTHING I buy DD2 comes from ebay - it's almost a hobby!

me too!

cornishzulu · 07/03/2008 11:14

My DS is now 6 months old and I still love him in brightly coloured baby grows. Love Gap and Green Baby stuff as they wash up beautifully and keep their shape. I can't be bothered with shoes and socks. Or wrestling our wriggly monster into jeans.
