Clashing colours and rainbow stripes or little dude/fairy princess how do you dress your child?

I love bright colours, especially if they clash and try to avoid the head to toe pink/blue. I also hate slogans, (especially on babies) trainers, velour tracksuit trousers, combat gear etc. I know I'm too fussy about this - so I was wondering how does everyone else dress their children?

I hate slogans and stuff I'm afraid.

I'm another fan of stripey colourful stuff - just bought my little one a gorgeous stipey multi colored dress. Its a Happy Green Bee one, I think they're pretty new over here but well known in America.

I think it's hard to find nice kids clothes these days. The supermarkets all seem to do the same old stuff.

LLD · 05/03/2008 14:04

I have horrible memories of being made to wear school uniform at primary school (and my younger sister), altho the school didn't have a uniform..,used to have lots of fights brazening out my grey pianfore. Swore then would always let my kids dress to fit in. They have been choosing their own clothes and dressing themselves since they were two. Most days couldn't tell you what they were wearing. Does NOT mean I buy them extraordinarily expensive trainers etc, just that they always feel comfortable and confident.

mamalovesmojitos · 05/03/2008 14:24

oh i spend so much time buying clothes for four yr old dd, as do all my friends. h&m are great but none where i live, love zara and monsoon too. love eclectic clothes on her and strong colours, baby pinks blues etc look terrible on her. but it is difficult to find blacks, dark purples etc for little girls. at the moment we're going through a phase of floral skirts and prairie dresses with fab designer (on sale!!!) knee length leopard print boots, skinny white jeans with neon pink runners. loving black footless tights and her furry white knee length coat from primark (tenner) which everyone comments on. shes a proper fashionista. its like dressing dolls isn't it?

Also try to stear my dd (4) away from too much pink. She usually wears quite clashy colours, has never owned a pair of trainers and only ever had one pair of jeans - I like H&M on the highstreet and a local kids boutique that stocks some gorgous clothes by phister and philina (phisterphilina.dk i think) They do lovely baby clothes so have bought some stuf for my ds (1) too. I also love lizzie shirt clothes (lizzieshirt.co.uk) I am not advertising these websites btw as i have nothing to do with them - just thought some of you might like their clothes too. On the high street i love gap for my ds (but not with GAP across the front! )

bozza · 05/03/2008 14:48

DS is 7 so in school uniform for quite a bit of the time. He is also inherently scruffy with a love of football shirts. I don't mind him having football shirts but try to limit his wearing of them. Usually when I object to his football shirt though, he goes and finds a scruffy, out of shape t-shirt to team with a pair of jeans.

DD is 3.9 and has very definite opinions on her clothes. Although she is very girly she likes jeans, especially likes jeans and long tops. Today she is wearing next jeans and a lilac jumper from Asda - she is at nursery. Yesterday she wore a quite retro cord print dress in light blue/lime green/brown with a brown polo under it and lime green leggings.

olivo · 05/03/2008 14:56

havent read all of the thread but had to confess ,Poppychick - I think its ME buying all the peppa pig things! My dd (18mo) adores her and she has t-shirts, trousers, vests, pjs and socks with her on (although only ever one PP item worn at a time!). SHe mostly wears jeans and long sleeved t-shirts, never from anywhere expensive as she gets covered in paint most days at nursery!

before i had my dd, i wasn't a big fan of character clothes but her little face lights up when she sees her peppa things. she wears quite a lot of pink but that's because lots of little girl clothes are only available in pink!

i love dungarees on little ones too!

florenceuk · 05/03/2008 15:14

my kids love: (DD) pink/purple/red/blue, pretty pictures, dora, peppa pig, charlie and lola etc, comfy clothes (like tracksuit pants), anything her brother wore at the same age, dresses, swimwear (if only). DS likes: blue and green, character tees, hoodies, comfy pants, nothing scratchy, cool football-style shoes. Clearly they have no taste compared with the mums on this thread! However, I buy the clothes so we compromise (I refuse to buy camouflage for example).

helenelisabeth · 05/03/2008 19:26

DD1 (5) has an obsession for pyjamas and would wear them to school if I let her. She is obsessed with being comfortable and as soon as she comes home from school she will run upstairs and put favourite pyjamas of the day on.

So have a wardrobe full of Monsoon, Gap etc yearning to be worn...

I gave up a long time ago where her dress sense is concerned.

DD2 (6 months) wears bits from Next and babygros. With it being winter I keep her in babygros for warmth and comfort unless I am going out and she will be in and out of her pushchair, then I will put her in an outfit.

peacelily · 05/03/2008 19:58

dd18m wears lovely clothes (whilst I still have control!). Smock tops, funky 60s dresses denim pinafore dresses and jeans with embroidery. Love stuff from monsoon but only occasionally because of the cost, most of her stuff is H&M, Zara, Next and M&S.

I like her in bold colours, red, purple, blue and green, and lots of stripey stuff.

Hate branded/character stuff (esp. disney arghh!) and anything too baby pink and frilly/girlie or with teddy bears/puppy dogs etc.. She's a funky chick!

cadelaide · 05/03/2008 20:18

Next is awful.

Absolutely bloody awful, kids and adults.

Ekka · 05/03/2008 20:22

My dd has all hand-me-downs from her cousin, who is a year older . Luckily my SIL & BIL live in the US and have some great outfits from 'Gymboree' - they do lovely little leggings which are great as dd is crawling/cruising the furniture so are comfy but don't slip down/get caught up round her feet like most other things. Plus the leggings are really cute without too much pink!

Have to admit though that we also got a great pair of Gap jeans from them (think they must be 3rd/4th hand) which she seems really comfy in - mind you they have been washed so much they are lovely and soft and no embroidery/pink stuff on them !

Can't do dresses for her though and have loads hanging up in the wardrobe that will never be worn

lucharl · 05/03/2008 20:32

"i like dd to look really attractive so on a typical day she wears satine hotpants with fishnet tights and a cute litte playboy crop top. she only wears kitten heels cos i don't want to ruin her feet just yet.

some times just for fun i put a transfer on the base of her spine for a fun tramp stamp look."

thanks shezerade!

andyrobo237 · 05/03/2008 20:37

Another vote here for the no slogans and combats and baby pink for DD!

Having a Dd then a DS I am finding boys clothes fairly dull! He got a mini shirt for 1st birthday - dont like it so should take it back, but DH likes it! I dont like shirts on little boys - look like mini adults!

DD who is 6 is very opinonated on what she likes - I said - we must get you a new coat - and she said - yes, I was thinking of green with a big hood that zips in half - like fairy wings!!!

So now I am on the lookout for that - as nothing else will do!

She also suits black - has a lovely black and white spotted top from Pumpkin Patch that really suits her - she definately knows what she likes and has been known to pick tops for me!!!!!!!!!!

Malene · 05/03/2008 20:55

Before anyone tells me off I am purely answering a question raised by trickquestion - All the tops are fairly ok - pretty average size but they are 100% cotton so they will go smaller when washed so always by a size up if you want it to last for a bit. And because the tops are a little fitted you can get away with wearing them on the bigger side. In the pink navigation bar to the left of the webpage you will find a size guide - I hope this helps.

Any question please send me an email on [email protected] - I can then answer questions directly so that I don't offend anyone by posting them here (they have taken my previous posting off as a few complained - never meant to offend anyone purely wanted to thank the people who keep mentioning my site!!!!!!!! Always happy to answer questions so please keep them coming.

Best regards
Malene

I dont like sportswear, football tops or anything like - tacky
I dont like Barbie clothes or camoflague.Dont like cheap clothes and like them to look trendy.I too set clothes out and wont let DP pick.Buy mostly from NEXT and for special occasions Monsoon but buy some summer/holiday clothes from ASDA or occasionally Primark as although cheapo you can get nice shorts and vests for v v little.

When they are done with I flog them all on ebay and I sold all my dd summer and winter clothes from 2006/07 and it paid for a branc new Mamas and Papas pram and car seat for ds

and whats wrong with denim?I love ds 13 weeks in his jeans and beanie and likewise dd 4 in denim skirts and stripey tights.

Have a real problem with shoes.Buy far too many and love continental ones......

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 05/03/2008 21:05

oh and hate character clothing.New to world of boys shopping and am amazed by huge amounts of tacky bob the builder and so on (even in m&s )

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 05/03/2008 21:07

I am not keen on children in black. Having said that DD has been given a handmedown dress that she is quite keen on that is black with white spots on. But is currently miles too big for her.

For tomorrow she has chosen a pair of red/pink/purple stripy trousers from Next and a dusky pink cotton tunic from Mothercare. Both handmedowns from different sources but a perfectly good nursery outfit. I currently have the white cardigan she went in last week soaking in bleach.

bozza · 05/03/2008 21:10

We do character pjs and underwear. And socks. But only ones that are bought my grandmas - I buy plain/slightly patterned/stripey socks.

OverMyDeadBody · 05/03/2008 21:11

Next kids clothes are, on the whole, tacky and only trendy in a nuevo riche way

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 05/03/2008 21:12

yes we do character underwear and pjs either peppa pig or disney princess

must admit been shopping today and cant look at boys stuff.Seems so boring compared to little girls!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 05/03/2008 21:14

lol over

I think they are trendy without being tacky and well priced and hold there value for ebay!!

I don't buy, I inherit!

Seriously, mostly H&M, second hand shops, Zara, and Earopean websites, have found much more intersting boys clothes this way.
