Do big babies turn into big adults?

Just curious about this!

My daughter is 12 weeks and I’d imagine either 99th centile or off the charts for her height and weight!

She weighs 14lbs 5oz and looks huge compared to friends babies that are her age!

Does this necessarily correlate with how tall she will be as an adult?

I am 5ft 6 and slim, was tiny until I hit puberty and DH is 5ft 11 and also slim but we don’t know how big we were as babies!

DD was 10lb 13oz at birth and 99th centile for height. She’s now 50th for weight and 75th for height at 5. It often balances out.

Mine were big babies:

DC1 9lb 7oz, now a slim 5 in 5-6 clothing but it's big on her, lots of taller and bigger friends. I'm short and I suspect she will be too.

DC2 9lb 12oz, now 3 and just about in 2-3 clothes. Still has that toddler look where she's chunkier than DC1 but DC1 was the same at this age so I suspect she'll have a similar build, but shorter. She will definitely be short!

I think it all sorts itself out.

First baby 10lbs 4oz at 37 weeks, now 20 years old and 5' 11.5". Daughter 9lbs 10oz at 38 weeks, now at 18 is 5'6.5".

My sister was a huge, almost 11lb newborn, whereas I was a dainty 7lb. 50 years later, sister is a petite size 10 and 5ft 4, whereas I'm a size 14/16 and 5ft 8! So in our case OP the answer is no!

Roundandnour · 14/09/2023 11:09

My youngest was massive. Often off the chart when he was weighed etc.
He's now. 6ft 4. He was taller than me when he was 10. Hope at 17 he has finally stopped growing 😂
I'm only 5"2 and his dad 5"11.

However, my eldest was the smallest of all of them, under the 50 percentile and he's just over 6"

Maybe I just create tall people though as my dd's are also 5"8+

My friend's child was 9lbs at birth and is now a slightly overweight pre-teen.

UnravellingTheWorld · 15/09/2023 07:27

No, not necessarily. Birth weight is determined by gestational age and the uterine environment (so more nutirents = more weight). Once the baby is born, genetics take over.

I actually asked my friend (a paed doctor) about this last year. My son was almost 9lbs at birth and quite long, but now age 2 has a very average height and weight.

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/09/2023 07:29

My eldest was 10lb 8oz and birth and is now an average sized teenager. He's 10 and 5ft 6.

Beamur · 15/09/2023 07:29

Nope.
My giant baby is quite a petite teen and I was a teeny baby and am a strapping tall woman 😁

Defaultsettings · 15/09/2023 07:31

My friends daughter was 12lb 4 when she was born. She’s 20 years old now and a six 6.

Hellocatshome · 15/09/2023 07:33

My 1st was 8lb 3oz he is now 16 and 6ft 2 but skinny. My 2ndnwas 8lb 10 he is now 13 and a little titch on the 9th centile.

So no I dont think it really matters.

Vallmo47 · 15/09/2023 07:33

No not in my case. :)
My firstborn was 9.10 oz and my second 10.2oz. My firstborn is now the height of his parents at age nearly 16 (average for his age) and my second is slightly taller than her friends, but not the tallest overall. My firstborn is slim, he was a very chubby baby 😂 and my second has been solid all along.
They were both off the charts as babies and people commented all the time but not now. Your children will likely become like you one day - or somewhere in between.

SillySausage21 · 15/09/2023 07:34

My nephew was 4lb 4oz's born and is now an obese 18 year old 😬

inappropriateraspberry · 15/09/2023 07:35

No! I was 9lb 10oz at birth and was always the smallest in class, slowest to grow/develop. I am now 5' 7" so not short, but have always been slim.

Year13novice · 15/09/2023 07:37

I had a small (5lb) baby who was not Prem but just tiny and he’s now 6ft age 15. I know this is the opposite of what you’ve asked but just adding my bit in! His brother was 3lbs heavier at birth and is similar height but two years older.

My DD was born 8lb 13 and was on the 91st centile and by 3 months she was on 35th and has been steadily on that since. She is now 2 and is still on the 34th centile. Height wise she is on the 18th. We thought she was going to be long and tall (like me when I was born) but actually she is a petite little 2 year old :-)

EmmaPaella · 15/09/2023 07:43

No - it doesn't. I've known enormous babies end up relatively small.

Based on a sample of one, the length of a baby may make a difference though. On DD's chart, you could plot a graph based on her length to see how tall she would end up and she is the height I expected her to be based on that.

HauntingSecrets · 15/09/2023 07:45

Both of my babies were big and are now totally average children, I was a 9lb baby and now 5ft9 and 9 stone so tall but not big.

JessieLongleg · 15/09/2023 07:46

I was 70cm long when I was born and turned 5ft 10 at 13. The family is tall so no surprise. The red book has a chart in the back to predict these things but don't include women taller than 5ft8.

Caspianberg · 15/09/2023 07:46

Not here. Ds was 99% for height and weight born. Now at 3 years he’s still tall but slimmed right down

sedgyhdc · 15/09/2023 07:47

My eldest was a big baby, only 50th when born, 91st by the time he was 6 months, but went back down to 50th once weaned and no longer BF. I was told BF babies can get big whilst on only milk.

Sofasurfer23 · 15/09/2023 07:48

DC1: 2nd percentile weight and 50th height now 50th weight and 99th height (going to be super tall)
DC2: 50th for height and weight and now 75th height and 85th weight (above average height)

Both my kids haven’t stayed the same percentiles but once they hit 1-2 years they have stayed pretty much the same and they are now in primary school

sedgyhdc · 15/09/2023 07:48

(And he has been a continually very skinny kid! 13 now).

Watchkeys · 15/09/2023 07:50

No. There's a family joke that I've barely put on any weight since I was a toddler. I'm 5'10" now and average build; I was massive when I was 'little'.
