Baby won’t sleep without sleeping bag - what do do in the heatwave??

My DD likes to be in her sleeping bag for her naps and night time sleep, I’ve tried taking her out of it during the heatwave, but she keeps getting her feet stuck in the cot bars and getting distressed or waking up crying. She was swaddled as a newborn so I think she likes the feeling of being snug in the sleeping bag.

It’s a 1.5 tog bag, I’ve looked in every local supermarket or shop that sells baby stuff and can’t find any that are a lower tog than this. I saw a guideline for safe sleep in heat that babies should be in a 0.5 tog bag during this sort of heat but I literally can’t find one!

So she has been wearing just a nappy, vest and the sleeping bag at night, with a fan on in the room (not pointing at her!).

I’m worried that the sleeping bag is too thick for the summer but I literally can’t find any without having to order online and wait for delivery. Does this sound OK? Or should I lose the vest and have her in just nappy and sleeping bag?

No way. She will badly overheat. Use a small light sheet at most.

MidnightOnceMore · 08/09/2023 14:56

Better for her to be annoyed and wake up, than be too hot.

Amazon has tons of 0.5 tog sleeping bags.

Depending on how old she is, can you use a pillowcase? Or fashion something out of one?

scott2609 · 08/09/2023 14:57

Just order a 0.5 tog bag for next day delivery on Amazon?

Cluelessfirstimer · 08/09/2023 15:00

You can get a 0.5 on amazon.

Alternatively how old is baby? Last year we used a pillow case for a while until we could get one delivered.

We had sleeping bags that were muslin fabric with just a nappy underneath.

newmama311 · 08/09/2023 15:12

I've been putting my 8 month old down in just her nappy this week. Muslin in the cot as she often snuggles it as a comfort. You could try that

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 15:13

Babies manage in hot countries so she will survive albeit be a bit sweaty

Can you cut open the seam at the bottom to let in air then just re sew it later ?

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 15:15

When I was in India and it was 25-30 degrees which for them was winter and cold and we saw babies with wooly hats on Confused

We use Aden & Anais muslin sleeping bags for our kids during the summer- they're literally just one layer of muslin thick. It's a bit cooler here in NI so I just put a long sleeved vest on him under the sleeping bag. When we go on holiday I don't even bother with the vest.

Another vote for a thin cotton pillowcase!

applesandmares · 08/09/2023 15:25

Do you have a thermometer in the room? I took this photo of my screen from an antenatal class about 5 months ago. Apparently 0.5 tog is the equivalent to a muslin, do you have a large one she could use? Bear in mind temp drops too. It was 23 degrees in our bedroom last night when we went to bed but 19 degrees when I was night feeding.

I've just sold a couple of 0.5 tog aden and anais Muslin sleeping bags on Vinted. There are loads on there, this weather is exactly what they're for!

Suchardchoccy · 08/09/2023 15:28

I have been putting my 6 month old in just a nappy and her sleeping bag in this heat. I'm not sure what tog it is, but it is fairly thin. It's definitely not more than 1.5 tog, she seems to be fine. We're keeping the window and curtains shut in our room all day and then opening them at night to let the cool air in, and we always keep the thermostat in the room regardless of the heatwave. It depends how old she is. But i think just use your common sense and imagine if you were her and put your hand on her chest to see if she's not too warm. Trust your instincts 😊

Nappy
Large swaddle bust just di from under the armpits
No sleepsuit or vest

Chasingsquirrels · 08/09/2023 15:30

I made one out of a sheet using a normal padded one as a template.

TheEarlOfGrey · 08/09/2023 16:15

We're using a 0.2 tog Tommee Tippee sleeping bag at the moment plus nappy only. We found this in TK Max, ages ago now, but might be worth a look if you have one near you.

YourNameGoesHere · 08/09/2023 16:21

Definitely Amazon or Facebook marketplace or ask on a local Facebook or a local mums group if anyone has any 0.5 tog ones.

Failing that I'm afraid I wouldn't be using the sleeping bags your have she will be way too hot.

loulouljh · 08/09/2023 16:27

Make one from a pillow case! easy.

Helpmeimtired · 08/09/2023 16:34

We had the exact same issue and were able to find a 0.2 tog sleeping bag which he's able to sleep with in the heat just fine.

Totallyterrific · 08/09/2023 16:36

I think - create one using a pillowcase. Should be pretty easy to reconfigure a pillowcase safely.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 08/09/2023 16:37

We use the Love to Dream 0.2 tog ones and they seem fine in quite hot weather, meant to be Ok up to at least 27 degrees. It will only be a problem for a few more nights anyway.

Morty12 · 08/09/2023 16:38

I used to open up the zip in summer when mine were young but it's probably too warm even for that.
