Baby won’t sleep without sleeping bag - what do do in the heatwave??

My DD likes to be in her sleeping bag for her naps and night time sleep, I’ve tried taking her out of it during the heatwave, but she keeps getting her feet stuck in the cot bars and getting distressed or waking up crying. She was swaddled as a newborn so I think she likes the feeling of being snug in the sleeping bag.

It’s a 1.5 tog bag, I’ve looked in every local supermarket or shop that sells baby stuff and can’t find any that are a lower tog than this. I saw a guideline for safe sleep in heat that babies should be in a 0.5 tog bag during this sort of heat but I literally can’t find one!

So she has been wearing just a nappy, vest and the sleeping bag at night, with a fan on in the room (not pointing at her!).

I’m worried that the sleeping bag is too thick for the summer but I literally can’t find any without having to order online and wait for delivery. Does this sound OK? Or should I lose the vest and have her in just nappy and sleeping bag?

We use Aden & Anais muslin sleeping bags for our kids during the summer- they're literally just one layer of muslin thick. It's a bit cooler here in NI so I just put a long sleeved vest on him under the sleeping bag. When we go on holiday I don't even bother with the vest.

I used these

I think - create one using a pillowcase. Should be pretty easy to reconfigure a pillowcase safely.

Absolutely not

Thank you for your replies everyone. I am going to order a lesser tog sleeping bag but was more worried about what to do tonight. I’m a bit worried about the pillowcase idea in case she manages to wriggle out of it and put it over her face. We’ve managed to keep her room cooler and have gone for sleeping bag with no nappy. I keep checking her temperature and she doesn’t feel hot so this will have to do for now, but thank you everyone for your suggestions.

sleeping bag with no nappy

That could be messy! Unzip the end once she’s asleep and extract her from it.

Why no nappy? That sounds like a recipe for disaster. I would have personally just gone for a nappy and no sleeping bag, god only knows the state she will be in tomorrow morning when you unzip the bag!!

Re the pillow case, I had in mind making it into a sleeping bag...not just putting her into it. I think it would be a pretty easy job....hope all goes well and you find a solution. I think its cooling down soon anyway so the sleeping bag can come back out...

peanutbuttertoasty · 08/09/2023 23:42

Ergopouch do a 0.3 tog

Bunny2006 · 09/09/2023 01:32

Surely the op means just a nappy or no vest, not no nappy
My baby likes a sleeping bag too! I do have a 0.5tog from Vinted, it's Asda and I saw a few on the website I just bought from Vinted instead, I'd still get a 0.5tog incase or 1 togs at least. I wouldn't be comfortable using a pillow case or even a lightweight muslin blanket, my baby is 7mo and moves a lot and just grabs at a blanket. I do find she never feels as warm now she's in her own room and big cot as when she was in the next to me same room but check her temperature and she's never been sweaty or hot

Depending on how old she is, can you use a pillowcase? Or fashion something out of one?

I was going to say that.

Totallyterrific · 09/09/2023 14:58

@fairyfluf why not?
Its no different to making a dress at home vs buying one.
And yes......... I know there are considerations re safety but nothing that a bit of sensible thinking cant overcome.

TheBarbieEffect · 09/09/2023 15:50

There are lots of 0.5 tog bags on sale, including from the likes of Asda. Just get one of those Confused
