What was your child's first word?

And how old were they?

I think DS (21mo) just said 'book' !! He was holding one at the time and I'm sure I heard him say it

Mums DSS first word was 'barbecue' 😂😂 he just toddled to the kitchen, said it and went away again. Apparently it sounded more like a deep burp 😂

On an ep of RHoBH, LVP says that her sons first words were 'I can't'
I don't know if that's true or not but if so that's so sad. Imagining a little 1.5yo starting life his out with 'I can't'
Bless him

Cute thread! DS said bird at just shy of 12mo. He’s nearly 2 now and doesn’t stop talking.

MrsKwazi · 29/06/2023 04:12

Papa

it did sting a bit…

Rattysparklebum · 29/06/2023 05:07

My DGD’s first word was dada followed closely by ‘google’ as they had recently got smart speakers in the house and adults were constantly saying ‘hey google’ 😂

Impossible to say, because they both babbled and tried hard to talk including gesturing etc, before it just transitioned into taking. So there wasn’t a demarcation of a day when they didn’t say anything followed by a day when they did.

We had a lot of this- sounded like they were talking, but no actual words.

Apart from No! Very frequently.

Merrow · 29/06/2023 05:15

We count it as "bear" at almost 11 months, because that was the first time we were definitely sure he was trying a word rather than just babbling!

Alway1insomethingstat · 29/06/2023 06:00

It was mummy 😭 mummy and reached out for me. Now it’s mummy mum mum mum

DaisyWaldron · 29/06/2023 06:09

Both of mine started with the sounds they could physically make which sounded like works. So DS could say "ba" which

DaisyWaldron · 29/06/2023 06:16

DS didn't really have a first word. He could babble and say "bababababa" and used the one sound he could make with pointing and context cues to show meaning. So "ba" would mean ball but "Baba" might mean "mummy", "daddy" or "biscuit" and the enunciation gradually got clearer. DD was similar - she could say "dada" which might mean "daddy" but was more often used to say "ta-dah!" during a game of peekaboo. And she could do a whole range of identifiable animal noises and also sing a little tune that meant pirate before she had actual words.

21 months is pretty old op for a first word, are you worried?

skkyelark · 29/06/2023 07:17

Mama for both of them, dd1 at 9 months and dd2 at 8 months. They both had a sign for 'milk' before that, though, and used the one sign interchangeably to mean milk and to mean me! On the one hand, lovely they could say 'give me back to my mummy now' when teeny rather than just screaming. On the other hand, I was very glad when I became distinct from my breasts.

SpottyUnicorn · 29/06/2023 08:23

"Hello"
Can't remember when was the first time, but I do remember months and months of shouting hellos everywhere we went 😂

wavingtreetops · 29/06/2023 08:25

Bum

WeightoftheWorld · 29/06/2023 08:29

Eldests was "uh oh!" at 11 months and youngest was "quack quack" at 10 months. For language purposes they both 'count' as words in case anyone is thinking they're not 'actual' words.

BertieBotts · 29/06/2023 08:45

DS1 "look" at about 10 months but I didn't cotton on until he was 13 months and then realised he'd been saying it for ages.

DS2 "hi" can't remember the age. Or "tractor" was one of his first nouns. It then turned out that while we were saying tractor and looking at the whole vehicle, he thought that tractor meant "big wheel" because he loved (and still loves) wheels, the bigger the better.

DS3 "car" can't remember how old but somewhere around 12-18m.

Carbis · 29/06/2023 08:49

DS1: Bubbles at 15 months
DS2: Tractor at 12 months

Fireandflames666 · 29/06/2023 09:27

DD - Boobies
DS - Hiya

Sussexcricket · 29/06/2023 09:44

Dd1 Hiya at 21 months
Dd2 hello at erm... I don't even remember but it wasn't particularly early
🤣

Sussexcricket · 29/06/2023 09:45

no need to be in most cases

SedentaryCat · 29/06/2023 10:17

DD - first word was 'duck', can't remember how old, maybe just over a year. First sentence was 'this cat's rubbish!'. Can't remember age though.
DS - first word was 'light'. Again, can't remember how old, but slightly older than DD was. He also had a fascination with tennis - so would call 'Nadal' when the tennis was on.

MrsALambert · 29/06/2023 10:18

DS1 apple
ds2 sheep

GingerLiberalFeminist · 29/06/2023 10:53

I'm quite excited by some of these, my baby is only 6 months and she might speak! Frankly she spends most of her time makin deranged pigeon noises so I doubt it 😂

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking1 · 29/06/2023 12:03

That (‘dat’) at 11 or 12 months. I wasn’t really sure at the beginning because he babbles a lot of dada, mama, etc but somewhere around that time he started pointing at stuff and saying ‘dat’. He’s 13 months now and it’s very clear when he wants ‘dat’!
