What was your child's first word?

And how old were they?

I think DS (21mo) just said 'book' !! He was holding one at the time and I'm sure I heard him say it

Mums DSS first word was 'barbecue' 😂😂 he just toddled to the kitchen, said it and went away again. Apparently it sounded more like a deep burp 😂

Apart from the babbling mumum/dada, eldest said cat whilst pointing at one at around a year old. Understood lots but didn't speak a lot and still doesn't as an adult.

DS2 first word was yellow and he was very young, couldn't sit up, about 6/7 months? Very precocious speaker. I have him on video saying "take it off" while struggling to get his body warmer off, he was 15 months old. Would argue black was white by age 2 and is currently studying politics! 😂

DC1: Car (14 months) but he didn't say anything else until 22 months.
DC2: DC1's name (17 months) followed quickly by mama, dada, cracker, cake, bunny and dolly.

Daughter - bath
Son - dad

No.

DappledThings · 28/06/2023 21:50

Duck

MuchTooTired · 28/06/2023 21:51

Dada for DD
DS has speech delay and made sounds until gone 2, apart from one word he could say crystal clearly which was ‘shit’

Not my finest parenting moment, I’ve DTs who were utterly feral when small and oh shit was said too frequently as one of them toddled off to try to kill themselves 🤦🏻‍♀️

whatsinanameeh · 28/06/2023 21:51

Up

I needed physio for my back pain by the time he was 2.5yrs 😆

Seddon · 28/06/2023 21:51

I'm fairly sure mama and dada were part of their earlier babble but otherwise:
DS1 - bird
DS2 - no
Can't remember their ages it was so long ago! Not early or late enough to stick in my mind obviously.

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 28/06/2023 21:52

Blue. Mum was a big fan of Deal or no deal 😆 and he stayed with her till I finished work.

Joolsin · 28/06/2023 21:53

DD - baba (quite funny as DH and I had been joking about whether she would say Mama or Dada first - she went with herself). I think she was about 10 months old.

DS - I can't remember (the shame, poor second child!)

InceyWinceySpidy · 28/06/2023 21:53

Girl twin. 10mths. "Dangle" (elder brother hanging her upside down on the edge of the sofa and saying it, she repeated)
Boy twin. 12mths. "Kaboom" (watching his birthday fireworks!)

Jericha · 28/06/2023 21:55

DS said mama clear as anything at about 7 months. Then didn't utter another word apart from babble for months! Currently waiting for DD's first word.

Lovethatforyou · 28/06/2023 21:56

Bye - ‘ba’

Spottypineapple · 28/06/2023 21:57

Hat but it sounded like 'ass' 😂

Hugasauras · 28/06/2023 21:59

DD1 was bubble after mama and dad. DD2 is 12mo and has mama, dada, hiya and her sister's name. Mama was her first though, which I was pleased with as DD1 had dada first (and I told him that's cos D is easier to say as a first sound!)

BreviloquentBastard · 28/06/2023 22:00

"Eye", usually accompanied by an attempt to stick her finger in your eyeball

TitInATrance · 28/06/2023 22:02

DD - bath
DS - mum/dad similar time

CurlewKate · 28/06/2023 22:08

Ds said "Goal!" Still shouting it at 22!

DD's first sentence was "I not wear that!" It was the soundtrack of her childhood.....

dontchaknow · 28/06/2023 22:11

Daughter around 18 months or so, said mama and daddy, but otherwise just babble, then one day in the car surprised us looking out at a playground, when she clearly said "could 'ave a good play out 'ere, couldn't I?" And she went on to have astonishingly good and clear speech by age 2. Some charming mistakes - impotent instead of elephant for example. And we still eat curliflower in this house. But later on academically she was pretty average. Taught her 4 years younger brother his first phrase at around 2...."Shup bim bum" which was shut up big bum. Lovely. Then of course poo, both spoken and written on their play blackboard.......

purpledaisy60 · 28/06/2023 22:11

Wow 😂

ImthatBoleyngirl · 28/06/2023 22:12

Both of mine said "cat" first

Ozzyskye · 28/06/2023 22:15

"that!" Accompanied by pointing at whatever it was he wanted

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/06/2023 22:15

DD1

Pip (pet's name)
Oh dear
Door

DD2

Other side (when switching from one breast to other)
Oh dear

Can't remember the others. Both were under a year old, but can't remember exact age

Danikm151 · 28/06/2023 22:16

plen of babble with mumumum but then one day around 11 months said hello clear as day

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 28/06/2023 22:18

DD is Deaf so her first word was a sign instead: milk, at 6mo, closely followed a few days later by bird.
