What was your child's first word?

And how old were they?

I think DS (21mo) just said 'book' !! He was holding one at the time and I'm sure I heard him say it

Mums DSS first word was 'barbecue' 😂😂 he just toddled to the kitchen, said it and went away again. Apparently it sounded more like a deep burp 😂

"Ball" (10 months), then soon after "up" (11 months)

Almost two and hasn't really progressed from there! He's getting very good at animal sounds though

Up

I needed physio for my back pain by the time he was 2.5yrs 😆

I can relate!! 😂😂😂 I'm sure 'up' will be next. He pulls my pj bottoms down daily and now I desperately need a chiropractor - heavy heavy baby

Loving reading all these posts. My first word was my dogs name. Outing, but it was 'Hootch' probably also said like a buuuuurpp 😂

DD is Deaf so her first word was a sign instead: milk, at 6mo, closely followed a few days later by bird.

Clever baby!!
When ds was tiny I was in a coffee shop when a mum and baby 6mo came in who'd just finished a signing class and was doing the milk sign I was so impressed. Such a great skill to have and amazing how early your dd learned ❤️❤️

I would love to know, I adopted him when he was nearly 5, so no idea. I do however know the first thing he ever said to me which is my own little version of a special memory 😍

caringcarer · 28/06/2023 22:57

DD was Nana, then Dada then cat
DS1 cat then DaDa so I used to tell DH, listen DS is calling for you in the night.
DS2 Mum I used to coach DS2 to say Mum.

startafresh123 · 28/06/2023 23:05

DD - I think daddy? Maybe 18 months
DS - more, although he doesn't eat that much now!

newrubylane · 28/06/2023 23:11

Boy/girl twins.
Girl twin spoke first, said 'ball'.
Boy twin put his dad's cap on and said 'ha(t)'
At the age of 4 he is very much into ball sports and she loves to dress up. Go figure.

ChocChipHandbag · 28/06/2023 23:17

“Clap” . I think it was joining in with me singing “Wind the Bobbin up”. He was about 10 months old and didn’t say much more for a couple more months.

WotNoUserName · 28/06/2023 23:40

DS1 - dad or dog, when he was about 9 months old. I wrote it all down in his red book. PFB!

DS2 - oh dear when he was about 1. Then he didn't talk at all till he was 5 (he's autistic with learning disabilities) when I was playing with him and he suddenly said car. Then digger. Then chair. Then I pointed at me and he said mum. I cried.

DS's 3, 4 & 5. Who knows. They all spoke, within normal age range. But I have no idea what their first words were. I was asked at DS5's autism assessment, and also when he started talking in sentences, but couldn't remember at all. Blush

Oh well, they're adults now, so I'm sure they don't mind that I don't remember. Grin

thisbathiscoldnow · 28/06/2023 23:41

DD1 was an early talker so started saying words around 9/10 months, although I can't actually remember what her first word was! I do know she could name most colours and shapes before her 1st birthday and could recite nursery rhymes/ stories

DS2 - absolutely no idea 😂

They're 13 and 10 now and know far too many words 😳

twoandcooplease · 28/06/2023 23:49

@WotNoUserName I teared up thinking about that wonderful moment for you
Ds worryingly has been pretty much mute since he stopped babbling at around 10mo so I similarly teared up hearing that tonight. I'm hanging on hope I did hear what I think I did ❤️

DD1 "again" . Still good at commands... DD2 an approximation of DD1's name, her world still revolves around her big sister.

mondaytosunday · 29/06/2023 00:09

My son said 'nana' for banana. He was under a year. I think I had said 'do you want a banana'? And he smiled and said 'nana'.
My daughter said 'more'. Because I was always asking her if she wanted more (food).

80sgirly · 29/06/2023 00:11

Hoover!
Shame he seems to have forgotten what it is now Grin (he's 17!)

Alloveragain3 · 29/06/2023 00:12

Star at 7 months when pointing at a star. So surreal

Bluebelles23 · 29/06/2023 00:19

"Duck" at 11 months while looking at a rubber duck in the bath

MotherOfCatBoy · 28/06/2023 21:36

Dada, then No, then Mama. About 10-12 months, can’t really remember when, but I remember the order.

😆This made me laugh, I've had four, and definitely "dada" every time, before finally any happy recognition of "mama". I had "copter" (Helicopter) "blubs" (Gloves) and Bottle and "No" before any maternal speech offerings were made. Same sort of age (10 months) for 3, one did not speak at all until about 14 months and has never stopped since. My mother always said "they are either a walker or a talker". All walked around 14 months.

SkankingWombat · 29/06/2023 01:02

DD1's was dog at 11mo. We didn't have one and nor did any of our friends have them at the time, so I have no idea why that word came out first. Second word was cat, and she would neatly sort all the animals at the local zoo (we were members and frequent visitors!) into the category of 'cat' or 'dog' when asked what it was.

DD2's is a bit hazy in my mind - either cat, dog, or Dada - but it was definitely at 10mo. In my defense, she was/is a talker and went from no words to 20 in a month and that time was still rather sleep-deprived as well as running around after toddler DD1. She was speaking in basic sentences by 15mo (there was a memorable swimming session when she loudly screamed "NOOOOO! I WANT GET OUT!!!" and the other parents with same aged babies all swivelled around to stare at us), but she balanced it out by being a rather late walker!

Ihatepickingausername3 · 29/06/2023 01:10

My DDs first word was “no”

She can still be a bit stroppy 😆
