Mumsnet in the early ‘00’s. I’m obsessed

You may say I have too much time on my hands but I’m completely fascinated & obsessed at reading old threads from the early 2000’s on MN…. Don’t you think it’s weird/ironic that the topics of the threads themselves pretty much haven’t changed at all in 20+ years? It literally is the same old crap different day…I was born in 2000 so for me it’s like reading what my mum would have posted about being a parent… anyway, just a thought.

The men on Mumsnet in days gone by used to just be regular human people though.
There was none of the "man here" or Herbert stuff.
Men walked among us. Some were twats, some were OK. But neither of those things were connected to them having penises.

UnquietDad on the X Factor threads was bloody hilarious.

Have to say it's been lovely seeing some familiar names from the past on this thread though.

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/06/2023 17:38

I joined in 2002/3. I’ve made lots of friends here, have been on holiday with a MNetter, two weddings, an online funeral… not here much these days.

FiftyNotNifty · 18/06/2023 18:10

I've just this moment put a wooden spoon away and remembered wanky baskets...frannyandzooey I think?

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

Yes!! 10/10 threads!! Spent quite a bit of time in good company on those

namechangealerttt · 19/06/2023 02:38

I want to read wanky baskets now, can anyone find the thread and link?

You need to search for the word wnaky (that is not a typo. Well, it was originally typo...)

They are "treasure baskets" for heuristic play.

Connebert · 19/06/2023 08:02

Try searching for "wnaky"

Connebert · 19/06/2023 08:02

Oh, cross posts!

samseaborn4ever · 19/06/2023 09:16

I used to be around these parts chucking peace and love everywhere. Lush to see some old names here

WaterIris · 19/06/2023 09:57

I think t'internet generally felt smaller anyway back in those days. I was on a different forum from 2007ish for a few years. Made some good friends who are still on my FB now. We've never met IRL but got to know each other online and been in each other's lives 'remotely'. Feels weird thinking that I remember them posting their BFP pregnancy tests and then a few days ago seeing both of them doing the leavers photos for their now 18y/o children!!

Cod · 19/06/2023 10:10

I was thinking about her the other day. Wonder if she’s still overwhelmed with corks

I’d never heard of the word heuristic

morningpaper · 19/06/2023 10:21

She one of my favourite Facebook buddies. She is a WONDER. Also HOT.

I mean v wise and thoughtful

Neekoh · 19/06/2023 10:22

Haven't RTFT. But of course it's all the same stuff. Life doesn't change much - the fundamentals stay the same.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 19/06/2023 10:35

Talking about Facebook - one slow afternoon on here a load of us went "anybody fancy adding me to FB?" And we all did!
I've still got loads of those people on FB now.
Can you imagine these days 🤣

Connebert · 19/06/2023 10:50

Anyone in contact with Moondog?

This is so true
I have FB mates that I have made entirely online, some of whom I never met from those early 2007 days

I had the same name for many years but that hacking crap meant I took a big break as I was one of the people who was on his list of I think about 250 people who were exposed by him. All my posts over those many years were deleted. I chose that. I had been on wedding guide UK before MN existed or I didn’t know about it back in 1998.

CatherinetheAverage · 19/06/2023 14:36

I've been here since 2003 and can honestly say it saved my sanity and has made me a better parent and a wiser human. I was the first of my friends to have children and was desperate to uphold that 'it definitely won't change me, I won't turn into a baby bore' narrative and nearly broke under the pressure of trying to appear like I was doing fine. The kindness of strangers and the power of belonging (by association) to a group of sassy-ass women being brilliant and funny and clever whilst also keeping small humans alive was transformative.

I spent a lot of time on the camping threads back then. There was a MNer who owned a campsite up in the Lake District called the Quiet Site and I always wanted to go but never made it! (These days I do not want to go anywhere without a memory foam mattress and bath, or which involves peeing in a bucket.)

Same here. I had my entire history deleted because of Jeffreygate. Interngate just underlined why it was right to be careful about sharing info.

No, but she taught my daughter to read!

Comefromaway · 19/06/2023 15:56

I started off on Babyworld in 2001 and joined mumsnet about a year later when my daughter was about 9/10 months old.

It was a proper little community back then.

Great stuff! I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now if it hadn't been for her. Wish I could say thanks!

And ditto to CatherinetheAverage's post. Twas a great place to be.

Tipintorecession · 19/06/2023 16:49

I loved you @cod just the funniest poster ever, that crap typing used to really cheer me up! I've been here for 19 years, I've never felt wistful until just now seeing some of those old names. You don't realize how things move on and I don't like looking back, it's just so anonymous now but still good to come on for advice or news.

Lemieux7 · 24/06/2023 17:13

Moondog turned out to be a BNP sympathiser.
