Or is this an average age?

OP posts:

Most people I know wanted to go to university, have some childfree fun years and buy a house/flat before they had kids. Which takes you to 30ish.

GardeningIsNotMe · 31/05/2023 20:28

I was 18 having my first. So were a few of my friends. I’m so glad my DC waited until they were in their 30’s.

I collect my GC from school now and there are lots of parents in their 40’s.

Times change.

Londontoderby · 31/05/2023 20:29

Early 20’s was normal in my social circle and I had my 2nd at 24. I was a home owner from 18 years old though.

My sister in laws circle group would see it as very early though, none started having children until after 30s so it just depends where you live and what type of social circle you have

I had my first at 24. I went for a hospital appointment last week and the nurse asked me how old my dcs were. There was a split second of her looking at my age on the screen and doing the maths before she said "but you were just a baby yourself??!!!". It was such an extreme reaction , I couldn't help laughing. So yes, I guess it is seen as very young these days.

It worked out really well for me because I spent my 20s concentrating on the baby-preschool years and then I've been able to focus on my career in my 30s without having to worry about needing to take time out for maternity leave. You do what works best for you.

avocadotofu · 31/05/2023 20:30

Yes it's very young IMO. I don't know anyone who had kids before 30.

Newname47 · 31/05/2023 20:32

I had one at 24 and have still managed a fairly good career so far! I remember meeting a lady who had her first at 17 then another 4 later that was absolutely killing it. We all do things in our own order.

Personally I would probably have rather been a bit older and more settled but there's no guarantee things would have worked out if I'd been 15 years older either. If you have the choice I'd aim for later 20s but early 20s are fine, it just makes it a bit harder.

LittleMrsPerfect · 31/05/2023 20:32

I think thats young.

at 24 I didn’t have a stable home or high enough income to support a child. As PP said it’s much more fun to travel at 24 rather than parent.

fluffyfluffybunny · 31/05/2023 20:32

I had mine at 23. We did NCT and were the youngest of the group by more than 10 years.

I'm originally from a council estate in a working class town and it would be considered normal there, but I moved to a middle class hipster area when mine was a toddler (now aged 9) and I'm the youngest parent at school by a long mile. All of my child's friends parents are mid 40-50+ now.

callmesophia · 31/05/2023 20:33

Not young at all!

KvotheTheBloodless · 31/05/2023 20:33

Depends on your social class/socio-economic group. It's young for middle- and upper-classes, but not at all young for working class.

Absolem76 · 31/05/2023 20:34

Is say very young

ell32 · 31/05/2023 20:34

I don't think it's as common these days.

I'm 26 and have 2 but I have endometriosis and didnt want to wait around. Pretty much all my mum friends are in their early to mid 30's.

I love being a young mum tho😍

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 31/05/2023 20:35

NOT THIS AGAIN PLEASE (sorry op if you're genuine but this has been done to death recently and mostly not ending well due to a few posters).

Do you really think 24 could be an average age? Really?

gettingolderbutcooler · 31/05/2023 20:37

Very young.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 31/05/2023 20:17

It's you get than average but that doesn't mean it is "too young". It isn't too young at all. It just depends on circumstances. I was quite a young 24 yo. I wasn't long out of university and wouldn't have been settled enough to have children. But I know people who had them at that sort of age who are great mums and very sorted.

OP didn't ask if it was "too young". She just asked if it was "young". You are adding the "too young" handle to it.

Ostryga · 31/05/2023 20:39

Depends on the age you are now I think. I’m in my mid-30s and yes definitely think 24 is young. However when I was in my 20s would have thought it fine. I was 28 when I had Dd and felt grown up then, years later I look back as it feeling like a kid having a kid - even though it definitely wasn’t.

neveradullmoment99 · 31/05/2023 21:01

It's definitely not the norm now. I was 19 when I had mine. That was too young imo.
Most mums are over 30.
I do think biologically, 24 is a perfect age.

I'm 45 now, Dd is 21, I look back and think I was so young.
I absolutely don't regret having her young though.

Furrydogmum · 31/05/2023 21:04

My son and daughter in law are adamant they won't ttc til they're in their 30's. I truly hope they do as they say and enjoy life as much as possible first.

35965a · 31/05/2023 21:05

Very young in my social circle. Vast majority are only starting to have dc in the last 2/3 years and we are mid-30s now.

Fucking hell. So sick of seeing this. If kids are going to ruin your life that bloody much then don't have them. I'm very much enjoying life with DC thank you very much, best times of my life.

GAW19 · 31/05/2023 21:06

I'm 26 with a 2 & 4yo, people look at me as if I'm 15 🙃
I'm glad I had children when I did though 😊

bathty · 31/05/2023 21:07

No it's not the average age. No it's not too young.

Except it's not...

TheSnowyOwl · 31/05/2023 21:09

It will all depend upon the demographics of your social circle. I would say it’s young and not normal for those with a better education.

Whatt · 31/05/2023 21:10

Standard age
I had 3 kids by then...
