Was your 2nd a better sleeper?

Just found out I’m pregnant with my 2nd child! DS is 18mo, he’s sleeping a bit better but gets in our bed from between 11pm-3am and sometimes wakes

he’s only slept through a few times

I am a bit nervous around lack of sleep and I have just assumed my 2nd will not sleep like my 1st

so what was your experiences did your 2nd babies sleep better? No difference? Etc

Second ds was a much better sleeper. 18 and 16 years now and still ds1 is a real night owl with no real sleep pattern and ds2 has a good sleep routine.

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 18/05/2023 19:35

Yes my second slept in three hour blocks at night from the day I had her. The odd night she has kept me awake I’ve really felt it. DC 1 would keep me awake all night most nights it was hell.

stormelf · 18/05/2023 19:36

My second was an absolute awful sleeper, I can count on one hand the number of nights he's slept through (he's 3yrs old now) but he is now being assessed for sleep apnea. My first was, and still is at 5yrs, an absolutely amazing sleeper. My 1yr old is a mixture of the two, so I guess in my case it's very true that every child is different

Unfortunately my second was worse, sorry OP

IceCreamWithSprinkles · 18/05/2023 19:37

My first was truly horrendous. When my second was born, the first still wasn’t sleeping through the night at 2.5 yrs, and took hours sometimes to get off to sleep, and very rarely stayed that way.

My second was amazing in comparison, went to sleep well, woke for a quick feed then back off to sleep again, and I could put him down awake during the day at nap time and he’d just go off to sleep on his own, I never knew that was even possible!

My third slept through the night from prob 11-6 from about 8 weeks, and just never stopped! From that point being woken at night was genuinely unusual.

So have hope 😊.

whiteroseredrose · 18/05/2023 19:38

DD was a much better sleeper than DD.

Eileen101 · 18/05/2023 19:38

DC1 was an awful sleeper and drove me to the brink, until he slept through at 18 months.

DC2 slept in 3 hour blocks from birth, after a few weeks would conk out from 9pm to 5am after a cluster feed. Getting her to go to sleep at a reasonable hour now on the other hand....

Summerdayz530 · 18/05/2023 19:40

My second was a totally different sleeper. He would fall asleep wherever he laid, you could put him down at 8pm if he was still
awake and he would go off to sleep. He did however wake up frequently to feed and he never slept through until
he was 2 1/2. Third child thinks sleep is optional and there is not enough coffee in the whole world…

GreenMarigold · 18/05/2023 19:40

My first was terrible at going to sleep but slept brilliantly other than that.

My second was better at initially falling asleep but couldn’t stay asleep. I think she was 3 before she slept through.

Several years on, they both sleep very well.

Hugasauras · 18/05/2023 19:42

My second was worse for the first six months, but then we did some gentle sleep training and now she's better than DD1 was at this age (she's 11mo and sleeps through; DD1 was still waking once or twice at this point). DD1 is 4 and still appears in our bed at some point in the night! But it doesn't wake me or DH up so I don't really care!

Geranium1984 · 18/05/2023 19:44

Different... DS1 horrendous at night from 4-8mo , waking hourly for boob. Naps short until sleep trained at 6mo. Didn't sleep through TILL 12mo but has been fabulous ever since.

DD2 sleeping through the night from about 6 weeks old. Rubbish naps, 30mins no matter what. Nights have hit the skids since 5mo.
She's 6.5mo so will hopefully sort herself out soon!!!???

DucksNewburyport · 18/05/2023 19:46

Yes, my second was a much better sleeper. The third was far worse though!

FlounderingFruitcake · 18/05/2023 19:46

Absolutely not but my first was perfect- 4 hours blocks from day 1, 8 hour stretch at 4 weeks and 12 hours from 3 months, never a sniff of a regression, has never come in to our bed. My second didn’t nail it until 7 months when he managed his own dummy replace and has had many a blip since.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 18/05/2023 19:47

Worse.

So much worse.

If I'd had him first I wouldn't have done it again.

Silky12 · 18/05/2023 19:50

My first was a brilliant sleeper and generally easy baby, my second was also pretty easy apart from being an appalling sleeper. I think it was 3 years before I got a full night sleep. I don’t think there’s much you can do apart from cross your fingers and hope for the easy option.

Cakeandslippers · 18/05/2023 19:52

No sorry. My first was terrible but started sleeping through at 3yo. My second was even worse, almost 3 and has never come close to sleeping through, up so least every hour until 18 months and still up several times a night. Sorry it won't be what you want to hear but everyone told me you can't have another one as bad my first and I'd bought into that idea so it came as a shock when dc2 was worse.

Fingers crossed you get a great sleeper this time 🤞

Libmama · 18/05/2023 19:54

My first was and still is a good sleeper at 9.

My second was horrific, up every 40 minutes, never needed long naps etc. Hes 4 and a half now and still ends up in our bed most nights.

My third is currently 5 months and since she was a couple of weeks old only ever wakes up once, occasionally twice in the night. She’s a dream compared to DS2!

Moonshine160 · 18/05/2023 20:22

My second is a terrible sleeper. I am exhausted.
My first is a good sleeper though so I sort of expected it.

ladygindiva · 18/05/2023 20:25

They're all different, it's complete pot luck. My first was an amazing sleeper, my second and third were twins , one slept pretty well the other didn't. My mum says my elder brother was a complete nightmare , I was a great sleeper. It's a lottery! X

Yes. He's basically a cat; curls up anywhere and falls asleep immediately. Always has done.

First one hardly slept at all until he went to nursery.

LysHastighed · 18/05/2023 20:35

Different but much much more predictable. He woke up twice a night from the day he was born until about one. It was so much easier knowing I would be woken up at one and at five. My first was completely erratic though a better sleeper overall.

thaegumathteth · 18/05/2023 22:27

Ds was a HORRIFIC (non) sleeper.

Dd self settled, slept anywhere and was a dream sleeper from day one. Slept through night from a few weeks old and even before that just a quick feed about 3am and straight back down.

It actually helped me feel better as a parent tbh because I did NOTHING different and so ds being a 'bad' sleeper wasn't mr fault if that makes sense?

noscoobydoodle · 18/05/2023 22:37

My second was the WORST sleeper! she had long started school the first time she slept through the night and was only happy when being worn in sling as a baby (until she could crawl). Moses basket and pram went entirely unused and I moved into her room to do safe co-sleeping for my own sanity! She was and still is perfectly happy with only a few hours sleep. It's totally pot luck- My first was pretty text book and my third was one of those babies who could sleep any time any place!

Upanddownthemerrygoround · 18/05/2023 22:38

i thought my worst was a bad sleeper.
then I had my second.

still, they were bad in different ways and it’s nice to know there’s a variety in torture methods…
