Hi there.. totally new to this! My wife and I are expecting our first baby together. We are a lesbian couple, and my wife is carrying our child conceived through stimulated IUI.

im wondering what the best formula to use is? I know the benefits etc of breastfeeding, but we really would rather formula feed. Recommendations please?

Maybe once. But multiple times even when OP came back and asked her to stop? I wouldn't call that kind or trying to help.

If people weren't arseholes I wouldn't of had to repeat myself or give reason

OP asked you to stop. She said she wasn't interested.

You didn't have to do anything, it was a choice.

You didn't do anything that warranted any of your comments to be removed but it is absolutely wrong to continue to go on about breastfeeding when it was asked by the OP that you stop.

It certainly wasn't kind or helpful to ignore her and continue anyway.

Well posters shouldn't of attacked me then. I wouldn't have continued.

Again, no one forced you to continue. You decided to ignore OP and continue anyway.

Like I said, it may have started out as a kind suggestion but it quickly became about you and not helping OP. You had a part in that.

Yeah well people shouldn't be arsehoels and try and make me out to be something I'm not. I refuse to get blamed in any of it

You have some of the blame, not all of it because I do agree that some comments were out of order but at the same time, some of your comments were always going to get people's backs up and I think despite pleading innocence, you knew that.

People need to stop being so offended nowadays. I apologise for upsetting anyone but it wasn't intentional. I very easy react. Can't help it. Just defending myself

You can't expect others to react any differently then. If you can't help it, why do you expect others to be able to?

Redebs · 21/02/2023 17:57

My point about smoking was that a few decades ago it was widely thought to be harmless to children.
Doctors smoked in their surgeries!

The tobacco industry used to target mothers with ads for smoking to help with the stresses of raising babies.

Formula manufacturers are untruthfully claiming that their products are just as good as breastmilk.

That is my point of comparison, not a silly 'formula is as bad as cigarette smoke' statement by some spiteful posters.

Google Nestle babymilk if you want to see just how underhand they can be. Evil.

Redebs · 21/02/2023 18:12

Formula manufacturers have several manipulative, insidious campaigns currently:

There is one about 'not judging mothers' (complete with influencers, hashtags, t-shirts etc etc)

They have 'new mums support clubs' which pretend to support breastfeeding, but keep on about giving it up.

They produce 'follow-on milk' for babies over 6 months, which is completely unnecessary and is not recommended by any medical opinion. The sole reason for making it, is so they can get around advertising regulations which prevent them targeting breastfed babies under 6 months. They use similar packaging and market it as 'moving on' from breastfeeding. Totally unethical.

Formula manufacturers used to train midwives and doctors into getting mothers to use bottles. They used to give samples because if they get mothers to reduce suckling, their supply dries up and they are forced to buy the product.

They even suppress information about safe bottle feeding techniques because if everyone stuck to temperature and humidity guidelines, it would be too much of a hassle for consumers.

And all those slogans that people find so catchy, like 'fed is best' and 'you're doing great' ?
Straight from the ad companies! Men in offices pretending to understand what it's like to be a new mum, while actually sabotaging the free, safe way of feeding babies naturally.

Your examples are bollocks. Nestle is a horrible company for a whole load of reasons, their baby milk issues is just one of many.

The actual issue with baby milk and nestle isn't the formulation of the milk or how good it is for babies, it's that they were giving free sample in third world countries where mums weren't able to then produce milk as their supply dwindled. Also that access to clean water in those countries was poor and Nestle didn't provide adequate education on sterilisation or using clean un-contaminated water so babies were getting sick. It was a scandal that took place in the early 1970s and was highlighted in a report published in 1977.

We are in the U.K., we have easy access to sterile bottles and clean uncontaminated water. Formula is prescribed in some cases by doctors and given for free on the NHS, it is a suitable, safe and healthy alternative to breast milk. It is not the same as breast milk but it will not cause harm to a child if used in accordance with the instructions.

Nasty tactics.

Wow @Redebs I didn’t know that smoking was allowed in doctors surgeries. I didn’t know mothers smoked. What fascinating insights you have. How wonderful you’ve shared them on this thread where the op asking which brand of formula she should consider using.

There is one about 'not judging mothers' (complete with influencers, hashtags, t-shirts etc etc)

Shocking stuff that. We should all judge mothers as much as possible. I mean I really judge you for what a nasty person you are hijacking this thread with your own agenda and I judge how you supported evil formula companies as you couldn’t be bothered to pump. Am I doing it right? Is there anything else you could share that I could judge you for just to make sure I’m not supporting nasty formula companies?

How many parents stick to the prep techniques here though?
Does everyone wash and thoroughly dry the scoop every time?
Wipe down all surfaces before prep?
Never reboil the water in the kettle?
Use water above 70°C?
Make each feed freshly?
Cool the feed rapidly and use within 2 hours, or within one hour of baby starting it?
Use freezer bags if travelling and keep cold for no more than 4 hours?
Keep feeds in the back of the fridge for up to 25 hours, without opening the door frequently?

Redebs · 21/02/2023 18:21
