Hi there.. totally new to this! My wife and I are expecting our first baby together. We are a lesbian couple, and my wife is carrying our child conceived through stimulated IUI.

im wondering what the best formula to use is? I know the benefits etc of breastfeeding, but we really would rather formula feed. Recommendations please?

Please stop with all the negative comments etc. as a first time mum, I came here looking for advice. I know the benefits of breastfeeding, and colostrum. I only wanted people's opinions of formula that they have used, and if more expensive does mean better etc. I didn't anticipate this becoming so heated!! I appreciate everyone has their own opinions etc but please, let's stop all this arguing etc. I appreciate everyone's help and recommendations, but let's stop now x

Unfortunately, it’s the way it often goes with infant feeding threads. The two posters you’ve had responses from in objection to formula are the same ones who post the same stuff on a regular basis so it’s no surprise to me that they felt the need to push their agendas on your thread.

For what it’s worth, I didn’t give my baby colostrum and she’s a super happy, thriving 15 month old. If these people have unsettled you, you can take a look at what Emily Oster has to say on the subject. She’s very intelligent, well informed, well researched and thinks the benefits of breastfeeding are inflated, I agree with her and so do breastfeeding mums I know.

Your baby is coming into a family that loves it, will care for it and keep it safe. Those are the most important things of all.

In my own experience I've seen the benefits with my son.

Omg. This really bugs me

The op asked for formula. Not advise about bf or in fact anything to do with bf

Fed is best

Doesn't matter is formula or breast

It's the mums choice

Fed isn't best. Informed is best. Fed is the bare minimum.

@Emmamoo89 don't you get that the preaching does more harm than good? Your posts would put me off breastfeeding as I hate being told what to do.

Twizbe · 20/02/2023 14:12

Agree with the advice to use whichever one is stocked well locally.

You'll get a lot of people on these thread recommend kendimil, often using the same stock phrases about it being UK based and no palm oil.

Strongly suspect these are subtle advertisements rather than genuine users...

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 20/02/2023 14:49

That brand has done an extremely efficient job with advertising, shows just how well advertising works. We all think of ourselves as being capable of looking beyond claims and making our own decisions but really advertising works and skews your way of thinking. Very clever. You just need to ask how many people still yearn for a Mr Frosty even though anyone who was lucky enough to own one says they are shit to realise the grip advertising has on us.

If you have made an informed choice to formula feed then you need access to unbiased and evidenced based information and for that, as previously stated, you need First Steps Nutrition and not anybody's claim that their baby thrived on Super Brand or vomited on Own Brand or that Marvel Brand was a lifesaver.

SouthLondonMum22 · 20/02/2023 07:19

Sounds like she doesn't. Hence the OP.

Sounds like she does, because they are all making the same claims and she's still going to consider formula

Well obviously @Redebs and @Emmamoo89 are quite simply the very best mothers who ever have mothered in the whole history of time and they care more about their babies than anyone else. You absolutely must do as they say and make the choices they've made or they'll just kept on and on and on and on at you.

On the other hand, formula is used widely and has not shown to be harmful to any babies as long as you have access to clean water and sterilising facilities so the formula that's most easily accessible will be a good choice for you OP.

unstoppable1 · 20/02/2023 15:41

We used Cow and Gate at first with both babies but changed quite early on as it didn't suit either.

DC1 then went on to Aptimil.
DC2 has Mamia from Aldi.

They are both pretty much the same but Mamia is a lot cheaper.

Both children did/doing great.

unstoppable1 · 20/02/2023 15:47

@Emmamoo89 give it a rest ducky, it's quite apparent people don't want your input.

I appreciate opinions are like arseholes, unfortunately everyone's got one but give it a rest 🤦🏻‍♀️

I wasn't telling anyone what to do. Just suggested it. People need to chill

Haven't judged anyone. Jesus wept

JLQ1020 · 20/02/2023 16:11

We used SMA Pro. There are now 2 SMA brands SMA little kids ( which is cheaper) and SMA Pro which have pretty much same ingredients, I started using the pro not realising, would have used the little kids one if I knew

One thing to consider is if the hospital your wife gives birth in provides premade bottles of your choice. Mine did, small 2 oz bottles with disposable teats which were so handy. I bought more for home as for the first few weeks at night so handy taking a few up to bed with us.

We also used the perfect prep machine which we loved.

elenacampana · 20/02/2023 16:25

The very best thing to do is totally ignore those two posters. They have nothing of value to say and responding to them just feeds it. It’s clear from this thread that they have no desire to support anyone and are probably best ignored until they get bored.

Freddoforever · 20/02/2023 16:36

I really don’t understand why a kindly stated fact is seen as an attack?

Everyone here always wants proof ( I see it a lot people asking to be linked to a peer reviewed study etc or something health wise is claimed ) of health claims etc . It’s science that colostrum is really beneficial and harvesting and giving a baby colostrum isnt breastfeeding it’s just an option to consider kindly suggested in case OP wasn’t aware it was an option . Again it’s science that breastmilk is superior to formula - again a fact is not an attack !

Formula is an amazing very close second to colostrum / breastmilk. There’s no shame is saying that it choosing to formula feed (I formula fed and I’m not offended by people starting facts or offering kind advice!)

Freddoforever · 20/02/2023 16:37

Sorry if I’ve not articulate that very well as English is not my first language

LilyMumsnet · 20/02/2023 16:40

Hi all

Please can we keep the thread on topic for the OP, and make sure that you're posting within talk guidelines?

Peace and love.

Thank you. I wasn't suggesting it to be an arsehole. I really do see a difference in my son like when he's poorly. He recovers super fast. Amazed by it. I'm not against formula. I'm sick of getting made out that I've being judgemental. Or just a horrible person who can't or doesn't know how to parent.
