What are things you consider lazy parenting?

When DD was very small, she would lie on her mat under her baby gym and I attached a string the the baby gym so I could wobble it for her to look at while I sat on the sofa. That was fairly lazy #noregrets

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/02/2023 17:40

3-4yr olds still in nappies when no additional needs and parents who just say “they aren’t ready”- a friend who said her 3 year old eats too many sweets not connecting that she buys them.
I will say we all have lazy parenting moments- beige dinners, screen time afternoons, but when it’s a detrimental habit is the problem ie. Lack of sleep in young children, not brushing teeth, not bothering with their homework.

Lol safer than them running riot in a shop. How's it unhygienic?!

It is definitely not safe to sit in the back of a trolley. I know a child who fell out on his head and ended up in a & e!

Football in the road. That one baffles me.

As a teaching assistant (year two and under), the parents who;
Wont listen to their kids read
Never ensure their kids have what they need each day for school.
Never turn up for parents evenings or meetings.
Often “forget” to feed the child breakfast.

And yes I’m talking about families where we know their home circumstances, and there are no good reasons other than choosing not to do these things.

Simonjt · 17/02/2023 17:51

I used to tie a helium balloon to our daughters arm when she was a baby, hours of crying free entertainment and a perfect solution when you want to watch rugby.

WeightoftheWorld · 17/02/2023 17:52

Tbh I feel I judge my own parenting as 'lazy' quite a lot, but I don't feel they're active decisions just cos I don't care, but because I'm struggling with various things. For my own kids it would be too much TV, and too much unhealthy food with too little healthy home cooked meals. I feel shit and sad about both but don't seem to be able to improve either.

Zippidydoda · 17/02/2023 17:54

Erm only thing I can think of is pressuring older children into doing too much care for their younger siblings. Like when teens are doing a significant amount of parenting that their parent should be doing, if there is no reason for this.

Honestly though I think some parents need to become More lazy and back off from kids a bit. Let them have to fill their own time, let them start to put their lunch together, give them space to sort out their own challenges and disputes etc. obviously within reason.

Do you have two children? Genuinely asking because I thought you had a son or I could be mistaken.

Failure to teach life skills like cooking and budgeting.

Suprima · 17/02/2023 18:26

bad dental habits
obese kids because saying no is too hard
children drinking juice because ‘they won’t drink water’
tiny tots clutching phones and tablets in prams as part of wider pattern of using screens as babysitters (I’m not talking about 20 minutes of peppa pig a day before people @ me)
expecting your older kids to look after the younger ones
not listening to your children read

Fundays12 · 17/02/2023 18:32

Parents who don't ensure their kids are clean. I am not talking filthy as that's outright neglect but kids with greasy hair frequently, scruffy clothes etc because mum and dad had their own plans at night. Those that believe they don't need to participate or support their child's education and those whose child/children spend more time with their grandparents than parents so the parents can "rest". No harm in kids spending time with grandparents do parents can rest but I mean kids whose parents basically outsource parenting because they can't be bothered.

How is not my circus not my monkeys lazy parenting?!

I say that about my in-laws…..

Lol I was thinking the same for the same reason 😅

riotlady · 17/02/2023 18:42

I am currently lying on the sofa scrolling through mumsnet while DD watches Bluey, nowt wrong with a bit of lazy parenting sometimes.

DD was 2 when the first lockdown started so to wear her out I used to sit on the sofa and throw a ball for her to fetch lol

No, it 100% isn't safer!

You go first OP

Tiddlywinkly · 17/02/2023 18:47

I'm thinking most of what's been posted is more in the neglect zone tbh.

I judge parents when kids are watching tablets in restaurants (particularly without headphones ( but that's more to do with the irritation factor) and when sat in prams. Talk to your kids, do sticker books, let them look around and notice things...

Well, that's an assumption if ever I've heard one! How would you actually know the circumstances in each family??? What about the parents with mental health issues or those living in poverty or with DVA? I can't imagine each and every one of those parents are open and willing to come forward with their personal difficulties through fear of judgement or interventions.

Seriously?!

Daftmum47 · 17/02/2023 18:59

I’m an overwhelmed middle-aged single mum and let me make you all feel better by saying I’m really lazy in lots of ways. Too much screen time, teeth brushed probably 10/14 times in a week, sometimes too tired to read a bedtime story.

I’m going to read through all the replies now and get really depressed!

LucyLeave · 17/02/2023 19:00

I love a bit of lazy parenting. .
