I only bath my toddler once a week - am I the only one?

I mean, obviously I wash him every day, but he only gets to go in the bath and have his hair washed once a week or so. Unless something hugely messy happens.

I just don't think he needs it any more than that but everyone I know seems to do it every day. I partly just wouldn't be bothered but is it good for their skin washing them all over with soap every day?

Do any of you who bath your kids every day have full time jobs? We don't get home until 6.15pm earliest and my DS goes to bed at 7pm. There isn't time tbh. My 13MO gets one twice a week and has really dry skin too so there's loads of slathering of cream after he's dry so it's not a quick process.

Even if he didn't, I really don't think small children need a bath every day

PerkinWarbeck · 13/04/2008 14:56

spice - I do fit in tea and then bath after work.
It's more of a dunk than a wash

FrannyandZooey · 13/04/2008 14:58

I was aiming for every 2 or 3 days but tbh it has gone down to about once a week
he doesn't seem to smell
I find I can't get comfy sitting in the bathroom at all (am largely pg) and he gets fed up if left alone

I suppose I could dunk PerkinWarbeck but I can't be bothered. He cries when he's being creamed after too and I try and avoid that

frankiesbestfriend · 13/04/2008 15:11

Spice, your post sounds as though you are threatening to dunk PerkinWarbeck

Nah - like I said, can't be bothered

S1ur · 13/04/2008 19:37

Currently both mine get in the bath everyday and play. I only really bathe them as such (hair washing etc) maybe a couple of times a week.

But they like water play and its a way for us to transition from charing around rowdy chasing to reading books at bedtime. I don't wash them with soap unless it is needed. (although they do put a lot of food on themselves, and mud, and paint and on and on - in those cases I do wash them.)

However

I still think it is absolutely fine for children to only have a bath once a week. It means the witches won't smell them.

Toothache · 13/04/2008 19:40

Another one with minging kids here!

1 or 2 times a week. Sometimes I just let them play in the shower for 15 mins.

my 3 kids have a bath 2-3 times a week and alot of wet wipes in between .i think i should take out shares inthem . do insist on clean hand at meal times though.
me and my 3 sisters only had one bath a week on a sunday when we small, remembering to do the 3f's
feet
face and fanny
oh and i might add that it was me mums bath water with lots of floating pubes!!!!!!!!!

chankins · 13/04/2008 20:19

I'd love mine to have more baths than they do, but there is never the time! They have at least one or two a week, but I try to aim for three. The time between dinner and bed just goes so quickly with 3 of them, they go to bed at 7, ds goes at 6pm, so there is not much time ! They had a bath before dinner today though. MIght try that more often !

dandycandyjellybean · 13/04/2008 20:43

I too have a crusty, odorous cubbylet, although it does vary really. My disabled ds bathes in the morning a couple of times a week, and ds loves to bath with him. Other than that maybe one other time, when I'll bath with him and wash his hair. He does get grubby too, coz he loves to be outside and in the shed doing grubby things with his daddy, and a bit on the cheesy side post potty training too!!!! Just sling a flannel around a bit and loads of wipes....am really against all this antibacterial handwash and stuff, too. We are all just too sterile for our own good these days.....(shuffles off leaving faint whiff.......)

dandycandyjellybean · 13/04/2008 20:44

Sorry should have read disabled dh

lilolilmanchester · 13/04/2008 20:53

I bathed mine every night, but more as part of their wind down/bedtime routine than for cleaning purposes. If your DCs go to bed nicely then don't worry about it, they're obviously very well cared for. I had a bordering-on-but-not-medically-diagnosed-hyperactive child, and the bath made all the difference for us. He wound down, we wound down, and kept the routine going for DD tho she didn't need it. You're a caring parent, go with what works for you.

madmumNika · 13/04/2008 22:57

I aim to bath my two twice a week but in reality it's once a week plus a good soak when swimming!!! This is partly due to both having v dry/sensitive skin and DS having pretty bad eczema, but also just because there never seems to be time!! Of course I do try to keep them clean inbetween baths...wet flannels, wipes etc! and they don't smell...much! xx

yomellamoHelly · 13/04/2008 23:09

My 2 go in the bath every night, but it's just plain water. I rarely hsve to soap either of them up and only wash their hair once in a blue moon.
For us it's much more because it's an integral part of winding down the day ready for bedtime than anything else.

shubiedoo · 13/04/2008 23:16

My two (5 and 15 months) only get washed once a week in winter, probably twice in summer. Doing it every night seems a lot of bother, and waste of water too. Maybe once ds2 is walking he'll actually get dirty!

LyraSilvertongue · 13/04/2008 23:22

Mine must be particularly messy children because they need a bath at least every other day in winter and every day in summer after spending hours playing outside on the grass and in the sandpit.
DS1 is also a very hot child and tends to sweat in bed so he'd be quite smelly after not bathing for a week

Monkeybird · 14/04/2008 13:44

ooooh shubiedoo! YES! We're green we are, us slatterns. Saves water.

Iklboo · 14/04/2008 13:48

About twice a week. I can't lift him in and out of bath so DH does it - when he can arrange his driving lessons round it. DS gets a full body wash every day though

Swedes · 14/04/2008 13:52

Bath for 9 month old and 2 year old every single day. Older two have daily showers.

I don't put any stuff in the bath for the little ones but I do use a blob of liquid soap to scrub little knees or hands if required.

dustyteddy · 14/04/2008 14:01

I only bath my toddler once a week. His face and hand are washed daily. I don't think it is good for their skin to wash to often. He doesn't smell either, I'm pleased to say!

Bumdiddley · 14/04/2008 14:10

My dcs (3 n 19mos) have a bath on Sunday morning before church. I don't shower every day as I get psoriasis and it drys me out. Also, we're on a meter and water doesn't grow on trees
Can I have my slattern badge now??
