I only bath my toddler once a week - am I the only one?

I mean, obviously I wash him every day, but he only gets to go in the bath and have his hair washed once a week or so. Unless something hugely messy happens.

I just don't think he needs it any more than that but everyone I know seems to do it every day. I partly just wouldn't be bothered but is it good for their skin washing them all over with soap every day?

Mine are bathed at least every other day and then extra if necessary.

Racers · 08/02/2008 13:22

Mm we probably did bathe her more then (6-10m, thinking about it. It's just that bedtime routine takes so long with an independent toddler that adding bathtime too just makes it too late in the day (on working days anyway, when we can't start earlier if we wanted to)

Every day here...

I always bathed every night right from the day we got home from the hospital. Hair wash a few times a week. Now (age 3) we do about 4 baths and 3 showers / hairwashes a week. Didn't know how else to teach her bedtime routine and she has always slept really well so am too scared to change it now!!

suzywong · 08/02/2008 13:26

we only used to bath ds2 the once a week when he was a baby - very cold British winter, didn't ever do him any harm.

aGalChangedHerName · 08/02/2008 13:28

Have bathed all of my dc every day and also washed hair every day. I think they get pongy otherwise, hate grubby/smelly feet and sweaty/smelly hair tbh.

I shower and wash hair every day and like my dc to smell clean and fresh like me

giantkatestacks · 08/02/2008 13:30

my new house has a water meter so bathing every day really wont be an option for my 4 year old - plus we used to have a bath once a week when we were little - I think now it gets used more as something to do and part of the routine rather than an actual need.

mrsruffallo · 08/02/2008 13:34

My dc are bathed once a week as well, BB. I think overt cleanliness is strange and unnecessary

eeewahwoowah · 08/02/2008 13:36

once or twice a week. waste of water to do it every day IMO.

eeewahwoowah · 08/02/2008 13:37

and have never washed his hair with shampoo ever and it is gorgeously shiny.

Botbot · 08/02/2008 13:39

My dd gets a bath on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. I used to do it every day but I found her skin was getting a bit dry.

Was definitely once a week when I was little - Sunday nights while the Top 40 was on the radio.

LoveMyGirls · 08/02/2008 13:46

I bath mine daily because dd2 likes it and dd1 gets bad BO if she doesn't so dd1 bathes in the morning so she cdan put fresh deodarent on and dd2 gets bathed at night so she doesn't go to bed filthy as no time to wash her in the mornings just about have time for teeth! Tobe honest now dd2 is potty trained she doesnt get that dirty but she still wears a nappy for bed and naps so nice to have the urine throughly washed off at least once a day imo. Personally I have to have a bath each morning or I don't feel awake and ready to start the day, dp is the same plus if he needs a shave he might as well have a bath. Because we all bath daily so are fairly clean we can share bath water (there isnt enough water in the tank for us to run a bath each anyway plus no time to empty and refill!) We don't have the option of a shower or we would all have a quick shower each.

EzrasMummy · 08/02/2008 14:01

I bath my daughter every day and she is 9 months. My son who is 7 showers twice daily. He gets smelly when hes been at school and after school club running about and rolling around as kids do!

annoyingdevil · 08/02/2008 14:40

No once or twice a week here too. I like to think a bit of dirt gives them stronger immune systems.

mrsruffallo · 08/02/2008 14:43

Ezrasmummy- that seems a lot!!!!!!!

Habbibu · 08/02/2008 14:44

"I think overt cleanliness is strange and unnecessary" - tee hee! mrsr - are you in favour of those who are secretly sparkling? Hiding their cleanliness under a bushel, so to speak?

DS (21 months) is plonked in the bath every day, and plays with toys there, but soap is only applied every few days, and shampoo even less frequently (all hell breaks loose).

sagitta · 08/02/2008 14:53

BB (love the name), I am in the minority with you and was thinking of posting the same thing - but I thought I would get slagged off for being a lazy bint. We don't have a bath, so DD gets in shower with me once a week (with soap/ shampoo) and shower at swimming pool once a week . plus face washing (when she lets me). It seems to be enough - she doesn't smell/ look dirty...

Ags · 08/02/2008 14:53

I am the only one among my friends who does not bathe my children daily. It is generally only once a week unless there is a messy incident!

I think that most people bathe daily because of the bedtime routine bath, bottle, bed. But with my ds I found that a bath rather than chilling him out, got him very excited so I never used it in his routine. Hence, no daily bath.

sagitta · 08/02/2008 14:54

well, not her body anyway. Clothes, obviously are filthy...

PuppyMonkey · 08/02/2008 14:58

Hooray, can we start a club for no bath-ers!? Only ever bath dd2 (10months) when I think of it, which is sometimes once a week. Sometimes less frequently.

And we have a great bedtime routine without having to faff around with the bath.

It's called In the Night Garden...

Shitemum · 08/02/2008 15:00

Mine get bathed and hairwash once a week in the winter and every night in the summer. DD2 went 11 days without a bath last week tho...

JingleyJen · 08/02/2008 15:01

We bathe the boys every night mainly because both the boys love it.
It isn't ever a battle and they play nicely in the bath together, so i really see it as an extended water play session, they happen to get washed at the same time.

sagitta · 08/02/2008 15:04

puppymonkey - that's our routine too
