I only bath my toddler once a week - am I the only one?

I mean, obviously I wash him every day, but he only gets to go in the bath and have his hair washed once a week or so. Unless something hugely messy happens.

I just don't think he needs it any more than that but everyone I know seems to do it every day. I partly just wouldn't be bothered but is it good for their skin washing them all over with soap every day?

Bathed mine everynight and tbh got sick of it and did not think it necessary but it was the done thing. I was brought up in this sixties and we had bath and hairwash every Sunday night.

our little ones ( 2 and 3) have eczema and baths make it a lot worse, so they are bathed and showered as little as possible. probably once a week

they never use soap or shampoo either because of their skin.No one has ever commented that they smell bad They smell of themselves and not of some Johnstons product

Maybe we're not such a minority.

My 7yo baths or showers once a week and complains like buggery about it.

I'm trying to up the number of times, but she's having none of it. If she's particularly whiffy, I'll force her to shower before the weeks up but it's such a palaver!

I'm waiting til (a) she starts getting interested in boys and naturally heads to the bathroom (b) she learns about puberty and we tell her she'll have to shower every day soon, so she may as well get into the practise now or (c) we'll wait til someone calls her stinky...hurt feelings will ensue and I'll try not to say I told you so!

Sorry if that's bad parenting, but I can't get excited about a bit of dirt. I'm from the generation of once a weekers (bath wise!).

berolina · 13/04/2008 12:26

ds1 has a bath every day now, since starting kindergarten - where they do get grubby (mark of a good kindergarten IMO ) - but before that he averaged about once every 5 days. ds2 goes a week or sometimes more - but how does a non-crawling, sling-carried baby get dirty?

nappyaddict · 13/04/2008 12:30

i think until they hit puberty a bath a week his fine tbh.

MeMySonAndI · 13/04/2008 12:34

I'm sorry but, hormones or not, muckyness prone or not, a couple of hour running in the park under the sun and they need a bath, they smell.

nappyaddict · 13/04/2008 12:36

it depends if they get very muddy. ds doesn't tend to at the moment cos of it being quite cold and his clothes getting muddy as opposed to his body. in the summer when there's more of him not covered up by clothes then he will probably get muddy and will need a bath more often.

Purplemoon · 13/04/2008 12:46

4dc bath / shower daily...even when camping no matter what the shower facilities are like!

Younger 2 DC hair washed twice weekly.
Oldest two every other day ( gets greasier now hormones have kicked in)

The thought of my own babes/toddlers sitting in nappies all day and not having a bath and the same with the older ones using the "facilities" at school and so on would make me feel uncomfortable!

Sidge · 13/04/2008 12:50

God I couldn't NOT bath my girls every day.

The 19 month old gets filthy - playing in the garden at nursery/home, covered in dinner, dripping her juice/milk over herself. It's far easier to chuck her in the bath each evening than to try and wash her down. Also even though I use wipes when I change her nappy it's not the same as having a proper wash.

She even needs her hair washing most days as well - it's quite long and seems to attract food and grot Also a bath is more than just a cleaning process - they enjoy splashing, pouring, making bubbles, squirting.

I shudder at the thought of only bathing them once a week or less.

cockles · 13/04/2008 13:03

I'd be very happy to bathe mine less often but he loves it so much he wails if we don't! In fact at weekends he goes in with dp in the morning as well so what with swimming he is getting at least 10 washes a week (rarely with soap or shampoo tho!)

eternalstudent · 13/04/2008 13:07

DD is 15 months and only gets a bath 1-2 times a week. Mostly cos of her excema, I don't like to get her wet unecessarily.

eternalstudent · 13/04/2008 13:08

I think I love you starlight - was concerned I was a vile slattern!

aGalChangedHerName · 13/04/2008 13:18

I have CM'd for parents who bath or shower their dc once weekly (or even less) and they stink!!!

I have had other CM's at toddler group notice too.

To those who don't bath or shower your dc daily,do you bath or shower daily?

eternalstudent · 13/04/2008 13:26

Hell no! Why would you bath / shower every day?

PerkinWarbeck · 13/04/2008 13:49

I bath mine daily, but mostly because she loves the water, and it really soothes her if she's knackered.

no actual washing gets done most nights though.

DoubleBluff · 13/04/2008 14:05

I only bath mine when they start to smell!!
No really. Two or three times a week here.
Used to be less but DS1 is starting to get a bit whiffy under his arms.

I think if you've one or maybe two kids who can bathe together, and the bath chills them and you've the time, and they can both sit up in the bath and play without killing each other, a bath every night can work.

But I have 3 of very different ages who fight EVERYWHERE, one of whom is only just sitting up and who have to be shepherded into bed at different times. One needs a BF and nappy change also. So we pretty much insist on a weekly bath but other than that it's whenever they smell or have poohed in their pants (the 3 year old, not the 9 year old, though TBH he still doesn't wipe very well )

frankiesbestfriend · 13/04/2008 14:40

Every day for my 7yo, always have.
It helps her to wind down at the end of the day, plus I love cuddling her all clean and sweet smelling in freshly laundered pyjamas.
Sorry, once a week eeww ! (imho)

Monkeybird · 13/04/2008 14:42

oh away with yer ewwww; our kids will all be robust and healthy with immune systems; all your clean kids will be wimpy 'I want to be alone' lying on the sofa poorly types...

starscream · 13/04/2008 14:48

am i the only strange one to bath my daughter every nite and wash her hair she has really thick hair

PerkinWarbeck · 13/04/2008 14:48

lol monkeybird

the other reason I bathe my DD daily is because my house is so filthy she inevitably gets covered in stuff.

healthy immune systems all round, then!

SlightlyMadSweet · 13/04/2008 14:51

I bath DD3 every 7-10 days.

DTDs have a bath on Sunday and they go swimming on Thurs.

I often forget to bath DD3, she gets done when I think her hair looks greasy.

frankiesbestfriend · 13/04/2008 14:54

Monkeybird, I dont have to worry about her immune system as my dd is wrapped in cotton wool from head to toe and contained within a polythene bubble to prevent contact with outside world
