Is this dress offensive?

This dress was bought in America 20 years ago. It's a Disney Small World dress that depicts differing nationalities. It's age 2-3.

Someone said they didn't think it's very PC so I just want to check. I'm happy to be told either way.

I wouldn't put my child in it either.
At work someone posted a similar image on a learning website and the learners [round about the age of 20] were very, very upset. It's not OK and other posters have articulated the reasons why. IN our case the image was from the seventies and the rather elderly person who posted it was astonished that it went down badly. It's easy enough to avoid, though, so why risk offence?

Mrscormorant · 20/01/2023 17:11

None are meant to be portraits, they are cartoons, a quick way to identify.
Why do some people look for ways to c'aim they are offended?

Are you being sarcastic? I can't tell. Are you actually saying people should consider wearing racist clothing?

I think what this poster means is that if the OP isn't going to use it herself, then she shouldn't pass it on; i.e. no one should wear it.

You’d probably get quite a lot of money for it.

Now I’ve got the song in my head..

Yes the song!

I won't be selling it as I wouldn't feel ok about it.

There's nothing anyone could wear that would make you raise an eyebrow? If that's true, I'm not sure it's something to be proud of.

No why would I care what others wear it's absolutely nothing to do with me

Imagine being this ignorant and advertising it online.

People like to be offended these days so they can complain on Mumsnet !

pinkstripeycat · 20/01/2023 17:13

I didn’t realise this design was so old (unless it’s still being made somewhere). My friend’s young DD was wearing a virtually identical design on a summer dress (bought in the US). They are a Japanese family and friend’s DD was telling everyone the Asian girl was her (saying “this is me.”)
They obviously weren’t offended by it as they bought it

Why I didn't think we were allowed our own opinions anymore if something offends someone it has to be immediately changed screw everyone else

MadamLeota · 20/01/2023 17:17

I bought a small world T Shirt on park last month, must check which characters are on it.

I have a small world tattoo actually, though the characters are representative of my 2 children.

In terms of depiction of nationalities it varies across merchandise and by artist as Disney commission various artists for different designs, the dolls have rounded eyes, the cartoons are slightly different. The dress dates back to the eighties I believe.

No it's not offensive. It's gorgeous. Little girls would love that and the colours are beautiful. Some people just look for offence.

silverclock222 · 20/01/2023 17:17

It's beautiful. Hope theres a wee ginger scottish girl on there with a checked kilt and rosy cheeks too because that's me and I wouldn't be offended.

And when people who are the race of those depicted have said it is offensive that means nothing to you?

But that’s the problem - lines as eyes don’t identify people as Japanese/East Asian. DH is Japanese, he has eyes. My kids have eyes and they would fucking hate this depiction thanks to the amount of bullying they’ve had from white kids about, yes you guessed it, the shape of their eyes.

Thinking this isn’t a good look isn’t being “offended”, it’s being aware of other people’s feelings.

It was me basically saying if cheezetoasties username offended me does that mean she should automatically change it because 1 person is offended.
